A student's view

When I left my prep school I was warned about the problem of becoming a small fish in a big pond, especially at such a large place such as Wellington. Such imposing buildings and an enormous campus could not have been in greater contrast to my small prep school in Cobham. But everybody was thrown in together and friendships were forged instantly. To this day the house unity is something binds us all into a tight unit and the closeness between everybody, be it house groups, sporting teams or just friends, is what makes the school work. At the moment we are preparing for our last year and the exciting challenges of responsibility which are facing us at this stimulating and dynamic time for the college.

The school, naturally, has changed very much since we arrived, especially in the last two years. But the reasons for coming are still the same and so is the rounded individual which Wellington creates. The plethora of activities which Wellingtonians are involved in remains, making us the busiest yet most rewarded pupils in the country. From cross country to chapel services to Round Square projects, there is nothing out of a Wellingtonian's reach. Nobody is able to sit back and allow these opportunities to pass them by, as these prospects are open to everybody. For example, every teacher is available for extra lessons and workshops in the afternoons and therefore there can be no complaints when it comes to preparation for exams or the regular effort grades. The dynamic of the school has changed with full co-education and the presence of more girls will surely make everybody fully rounded and appreciative of the world in which we live.

For me the greatest memories I can take from Wellington are of the opportunities that it has given me: a month in a leprosy mission in India and two months at school on exchange in Australia, being educated on the Gold Coast. There are not many educational institutions that can provide you with those sorts of possibilities. Wellington can. I will be able to use the resources Wellington has given me for the rest of my life. Students here realise how privileged we are to be here and therefore we are conscious of our responsibility to take advantage of whatever is put in front of us, and it is that which distinguishes us from the rest.
