Natural history

The Wellington College Natural History Society has been in existence for almost as long as the college. Over time it has accumulated a large number of artefacts including preserved specimens, a large collection of stuffed organisms and an extensive library.

The Society currently meets every Thursday afternoon and undertakes a number of activities including:

  • Insect identification
  • bird ringing and watching
  • moth trapping
  • butterfly catching
  • pond studies

The aim is to provide an annual record of species at Wellington whilst introducing the pupils to the diversity present with in the magnificent grounds at Wellington.

Wellington is lucky to host a variety of habitats with in its 400 acres.

Recent studies at Wellington have included butterfly life cycles and breeding of a variety of stick insects. Several members have gone on to accompany expeditions to Indonesia, Belize and Madagascar to carry out rapid biodiversity studies.
