The house benefits from its location and layout. All on one floor, spanning the west wing, it is an excellent environment for the development of relations between each of the year groups. The layout gives rise to a coherent and friendly atmosphere in the house. It is part of the College buildings and therefore enjoys proximity to all the main College facilities.
The first year boys enjoy living in a large single room, creatively designed to aid interaction whilst maintaining privacy. They are often reallocated areas within that room over the course of the year to get to know each other well. A prefect also lives close by in his own room to assist them in making the move from Prep School. From their 2nd year onwards, each boy has his own spacious and well proportioned room. Each year group is overseen by a senior prefect. The central part of the house is an open plan Common Room housing TV facilities, computer suite and a comfortable sofa area for socialising and reading the daily papers. The House Matron is centrally located in this area.
Number of boarders and day pupils: 49
So, why the Lynedoch?
Three years in the Lynedoch and with hindsight I would recommend the house to anyone looking to send their child into a warm and friendly environment that seeks to develop academic and sporting achievements, as well as wide interests in the cultural and social life of the College.
This last year, the group of boys sitting their A2 examinations achieved 97% A/B grades and 70% at grade A. Overall, the Lynedoch was the most successful house for examination results. In addition, the Lynedoch won the Senior Leagues Rugby competition, came 3rd in the Hockey and 4th in the Football - and all this from a house of 49! There is also wide involvement in drama, music, public speaking and other cultural activities, helping the boys in their personal development as well.
The result of this is that the house attracts a wide range of boys from all different backgrounds with different strengths; a well rounded and multi-talented house is therefore created. The atmosphere in the house is unique to college and you will struggle to find another house that tops it.
Ben Gateley and Tom Gibson (L6th)
This in-college boarding house is named after Thomas Graham - Baron Lynedoch (1748 - 1843). It was Graham who was entrusted with the defence of Cadiz early in 1810. He did so with great skill and in February 1811 he attacked the rear of the French army at Barossa, defeating them. With the South of Spain safe, in June 1811 Wellington put him in command of the 1st, 6th and 7th division as well as giving him two brigades of cavalry which he set to work against Badajoz in one of the first unsuccessful attempts against the fortified city.
He was indispensable toWellington and one of the five main commanders of the British Army with Cotton, Hill, Hope and Beresford.
