Independent Learning (back)

Wellington Sixth Form With A Levels focussed on 6-monthly exams and retakes, the IB takes the opposite view; a two-year, fully integrated course. Students must learn quickly to control their work-flow and must be genuine learners throughout the course. Cramming simply does not work. Successful IB students are, or become, self-starters; organised and have a love of learning. These skills and behaviours enable students to succeed at Wellington but also to move forward to the next stage of their lives - University - with confidence, independence and a work ethic. |
Wellington Lower School The fundamental concepts on which it is based are: Intercultural awareness, holistic learning and communication. The IB encourages students to recognise the interconnectedness of all learning. Assessment is both formative and summative: achievement is measured in relation to the objectives of each course. The course is based on rigorous, internal and moderated assessment. The IB Board sets the criteria for the final year of the course. Pupils complete a personal project in the final year of the course which demonstrates their understanding of the areas of interaction. The emphasis is on Approaches to Learning; students explore and uncover knowledge |
The Extended Essay and Personal Project
In the Sixth Form, this is a 4000-word document, independently researched to University standard over several months. It is a chance to show your proposed University what you can do. The student chooses the subject and the topic and, supported by a teacher works independently reading papers and books, performing experiments, interviewing experts and conducting surveys. Last year, Alice Chau's essay was assessed to be one of the best 50 in the World and will be published. Click here to read her story and watch a great video. In the Lower School, all students undertake a Personal Project on a topic of individual interest, which for many is the most exciting element of the MYP. They are rewarded for exploring something for which they have a real passion.
