In a year that has seen the biggest exam shake-up in decades, Wellington students have emerged triumphant, securing record results in all measures.

This year’s GCSE cohort faced a mixture of reformed and unreformed exams and, consequently, received results that are a combination of traditional letter grades and the new 9-1 grades. Despite the mixed-economy, the results speak for themselves.

The percentage of A*s awarded in the 15 unreformed subjects was the best in the College’s history at 62%; the percentage of A*-A grades reached a record-breaking 89%. In the reformed subjects, the results were equally strong, with an impressive 24% scoring the elusive Grade 9.

The Master, Julian Thomas, commented, ‘I am both delighted and heartened by these results. Not only have our students had to cope with more academically rigorous exams, but they have shown great resilience and level-headedness in this year of change – these attributes, not the exam grades themselves, provide the foundations for future success. We have been working together to develop independent thinking, learning and coping and today’s results give me great optimism for the future.

There has been speculation that the new 9-1 grades will intensify the academic pressure felt by GCSE candidates, but I hope the opposite will be the case. Students must stop thinking that one unsatisfactory grade, one dropped exam, will be the broken link in the chain to success and happiness. No-one is defined by their exam results. With the talent and character last year’s Fifth Formers have shown, they should feel excited about the challenges ahead. I wish them the best of luck as they make the transition into the Sixth Form, ready to embrace all the opportunities that will bring.’

Well done to our GCSE cohort of 2018!
