Polo - Wellington are National U16 champions for the second year running
Wellington are National U16 champions (for the second year running) and our Novice A team won their arena tournament.
Garvy Beh, Tommy Beresford, Tom Brodie and Karim Sheikh represented Wellington at the National Senior Schools U16 Field Tournament at Longdole on Sunday 20th June 1010 as the 2009 defending champions. Their first chukka was against Wycliffe which they won 4-0. Their second chukka was against Cheltenham College and this time won 3-0. The final at the end of the day was played against Marlborough College. In the previous two years, Wellington have come up against Marlborough in the final resulting in one win each, so the boys knew this was going to be a tense match. In true Wellington style, the boys' play and team-work was outstanding and they won the final 1-0. Well done!
Polo has continued to flourish at Wellington. It has now become an integral part of the sporting year and polo can be taken as a Major sport option all year round. Training takes place up to three times a week in all three terms and the standard has risen considerably as a result of the time and commitment that has been put in.
The polo team has toured Argentina three times in recent years and has benefited hugely from the experience. They now compete regularly in the national competitions to a high standard as well as playing the very best schools in the country. The growth in this sport is continuing, with plans to update the Equestrian facilities in the near future and this year the inaugural Wellington College Copenhagen Cup took place. We look forward to more exciting developments next year.
