The week ahead

Sunday 21st January until Sunday 28th January

General Events

Parents of pupils in the Third Form are reminded that Saturday 20th January is a closed Saturday for the pupils as they are going to the West End.

There is a full school Service of the Word on Sunday 21st January to which parents of boys in  the Anglesey are warmly invited.

On Monday 22nd January, Dominic Sandbrook addresses the W.C.A. with a talk entitled "The Sixties:  Never Had It So Good- Do you Agree?" in the  Driver Lecture Room at 8:00 p.m. Dominic Sandbrook has won huge national acclaim with his books on Britain in the 1950s and the 1960s.  Harold Macmillan's famous quotation   "most of our people have never had it so good" gives Dominic the  title of his lecture. Dominic Sandbrook is a British historian and writer. Born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, he was educated at Malvern College and studied at Balliol College, Oxford, the University of St Andrews and Jesus College, Cambridge. In 2005, Sandbrook published "Never Had It So Good", a history of Britain from the Suez Crisis to the Beatles, 1956-63. It covers British politics, culture and society during the first half of the 1960s. Dominic Sandbrook makes much of that strange, now forgotten flowering of folk music in his wide-ranging history of the Macmillan era, which aims to cover both culture and politics. Starting with Lonnie Donegan and skiffle (and Elvis Presley) and ending with the arrival of the Beatles, his book discusses many more familiar political stories in between. He writes with the advantage of a fresh eye, as he was not born until 1974. Come and listen to him remind us what the sixties was all about.   It is not necessary to pre-book but if you are intending to attend we would appreciate it if you could email Tarla Woolhouse  so we can ensure we have the correct venue.  There is a cash bar available from 7:30 p.m. onwards.

Tuesday  23rd January sees a meeting of  the Parents' Forum.  This is a chance for parents to raise issues about which they have concerns with other parents, who will then take them to the Forum meeting with the Master. Email addresses of parents to whom you should send questions for each year group are as follows:  3rd Form; 4th Form 5th Form; Lower VI; Upper VI . To help them get an idea of the sorts  of issues raised, it would help if you could send anything in by Monday 22nd January at the latest.

The weekend of Saturday 27th January is a Leave Out weekend but please note that it does not include the Monday, whatever your son or daughter might say! This is also an opportunity to say that the Saturday after, the 3rd February , is closed for the whole school as we are holding a House Singing Competition.

Finally the Master has been keen to stress some "basics" to the pupils this term and they are summarised in a list  of seven points. This  link should take you the intranet page with them on. Any support you could give to these points would be appreciated.

Further Ahead

As you may know, Wellington has announced its plans to offer the International Baccalaureate alongside A Levels from September 2008.  That means that the IB will be available to pupils currently in the 3rd and 4th Forms and to all those who come after them.  We would like to invite you to an initial information evening on Monday, 5 February at 7:30pm in the Theatre, followed by an informal reception and chance for discussion with teachers afterwards.  If you are interested in coming, please e-mail Justin Garrick.

On Wednesday 14th March at 7.45 p.m. the Round Square Committee will be hosting a World Café discussion event:  'Towards A Green Wellington'.  This will be an opportunity for all interested members of the Wellington community to join in a structured sequence of discussion groups whose purpose is to pool ideas for an environmentally friendly school.  You can learn more about the 'World Café' format here.  Places in the Café will be allocated on a 'first come first served' basis so if you have expertise, ideas, or are just plain interested please email Ant Peter, our 'Green Czar' .

Further ahead on a weekend late next term, Saturday 17th March, we plan to take all the Fifth Form to the Theatre in London. We did this with the Fourth Form this term and the event worked well. Therefore we would ask that you do not arrange anything for your sons in the Fifth Form for that Saturday night. The cost of the evening will be of the order of £40. If there are any problems with this trip on either issue, please contact John Arton-Powell as soon as possible as we need to get on and book tickets.

There is also a reminder of an opportunity to perform in a concert on Sunday 18 March to celebrate Elgar's 150th Anniversary. You will have received an invitation at the end of term to sing with the College singers and Crowthorne Choral Society in this concert of Elgar's music conducted by Simon Williamson - please come along to the first rehearsal on Monday 15th January at 8 p.m. in the Old Gym - all voices required, soprano, alto, tenor and bass - parents and friends are particularly welcome.  It promises to be a really uplifting experience.  If you want to know more, please contact Ros Dunmore in the Music School.

The apartment sleeps 4 people and is centrally located in Val D'Isere. The cost is £350 per week. Please contact Mr John Gale on if you are interested or require more information.
