Wellington - the week ahead

This Sunday 10th September, the Preacher at the 7:30 p.m. chapel service is the Master and parents of pupils in the Stanley are warmly invited to attend. The Stanley have chosen as their charity, the Treloar Trust. The aim of the Trust is to give young people with physical disabilities at Treloar School and Treloar College, both based in Alton, Hampshire, the opportunity to develop their confidence and skills to enable them to achieve their potential in all aspects of life.

The regular Monday informal concert has now moved to a new time of 6:15 p.m. The Music School hopes that this new time will attract many pupils to support their friends who are performing, as well as staff and parents. We had hoped to start off the term with a concert by visiting jazz musicians on Monday 11th September but unfortunately this has had to be postponed so we look forward to the first Monday informal concert at 6:15 p.m. on Monday 18th September.

On Wednesday 13th September, in an addition to the calendar, Splendid productions present a modern interpretation of "Antigone", drawing parallels with contemporary political situations. The performance will reflect the influences of Brecht, and features puppetry and physical theatre. A workshop to accompany the show is available to AS and A2 drama students at 4:00 p.m. prior to the start of the show at 7:30 p.m. If parents are interesting in attending the show, could they please e-mail Rob White?

Also on Wednesday 13th September, a group of last years third form will presenting an amount of over £1000 to Hope HIV. The students raised the funds as part of the Student Enterprise Programme (SEP). This gives each student £10 and encourages them to use enterprising methods to increase the money by a factor of ten for charity. Wellingtonians proved to be most creative in the art of making money. We will be launching the new programme for this year's third form next Wednesday.

On Thursday 14th September, there is the first WCA event of the term with a lecture from Paul Sloane, author and speaker on creative problem solving and lateral leadership. Paul is well known as a thought-provoking, entertaining and motivational speaker. He is the author of 17 books on lateral puzzles, creative problem-solving and lateral leadership. In the WCA lecture entitled "How Innovative Leaders Think", he will discuss the critical importance of innovation in business today. He will examine how leaders can create or inhibit a culture of innovation. The talk will feature examples from business and other walks of life to show the techniques that true innovative leaders use to achieve breakthrough innovations. He will give tips, techniques and golden rules that you can use to solve problems more creatively and ignite the creative potential of your team. It should prove to be a fascinating evening.

On Saturday 16th September, we have the first of this term's two Open Days at which families of boys and girls thinking of coming to the college get a chance to get a feel for Wellington. Finally for this week, on Sunday 17th September, it is the Talbot whose parents are invited to the evening chapel service.

face="Times New Roman">Advance warning for the next newsletter is that at 6:00 p.m. on color=#008000>Thursday 21st September, there is a lecture given by Richard Noble - the holder of the world land speed record. Anyone interested in coming should e-mail Tarla Woolhouse. On Sunday 24th September, in a change from the printed calendar, the WCA are hosting a Drinks and Canapés party for parents of pupils new to the school in Great School from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Next February Exeat, the Classics department are heading for Italy spending a total of six days in the Bay of Naples and Rome. The trip is open to those studying classical subjects in the fourth and fifth form, as well as the top two Latin sets in the third form. It is not open to any pupil who is already registered for the ski trip or the History trip at that time. Parents of pupils invited should be receiving a hard copy and an e-mail copy of the details. If you do not receive the details and would like to do so please e-mail Mark Boobbyer.

On Tuesday 12th September our rackets team travel to Harrow for the first match of the season and the golf season starts with an away fixture with Radley on Thursday 14th September. On Saturday 16th September our girls' senior hockey teams take on Charterhouse and the junior teams play Marlborough whilst our rugby teams take on Dulwich College with the 1st XV playing at home. Until the Exeat, there will be tea for all parents supporting any of the matches in the Master's Lodge if it is dry. If the weather is wet, then the tea will be in Old Hall.

The badminton season also commences on Saturday 16th September with a home fixture against the Oratory.

On Sunday 17th September there is the Berkshire Long Range match at Bisley on the Stickledown Ranges. It consists of shoots at 900 and 1000 yards and is both a team and individual event.
