General Events

The Chapel service on Sunday 15th October is a full school Service of the Word and parents of the Blucher are invited to attend. The preacher is Mark Sayer, Housemaster of the Lynedoch. The Blucher's chosen charity is their adopted school in Uganda, Nabukenya Primary School. The aim is to raise money for the building of this primary school in the very poor area of Mityana. We are also hoping to give some money towards a Christmas celebration for the children and a new set of drums. So far the house has raised in the region of £10,000 for this school.

William Nicholson, author of the Windsinger and other very popular novels is visiting on the afternoon of Tuesday 17th October at 4:30 in the Great School. On Wednesday18th October, the Actors of Dionysus will be performing their version of Oedipus.  This Brighton based Theatre Company specialise in Greek Theatre and performed at Wellington last year to great acclaim.

The Master's project finishes this week.The fourth form boys and girls are to deliver their entries to the Driver Rooms on Monday 16 October between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Parents should have received an invite to the exhibition of these projects - it is between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday 18th October and Thursday 19th October in the Driver Rooms. Drinks and nibbles are provided.

On Thursday 19th October, Michael Mansfield QC will be visiting the school and will be talking to the W.C.A. on the topic "Why are Comprehensives Best?".  This will take place in the Theatre from 8:00 -9:00 p.m.  We have invited head teachers and governors from state primary and secondary schools to attend as well.  This promises to be an interesting and stimulating talk. He was born in 1941 and educated at Highgate School and Keele University. Called to the Bar in 1967, he established his own set, now Tooks Chambers, in 1984 and became Queen's Counsel in 1989. Michael has represented Defendants in criminal trials, Appeals and Inquiries in some of the most controversial legal cases the country has seen - particularly where issues of Civil Liberty have arisen.  Amongst these are: Barry George, accused of killing TV presenter Jill Dando; the family of Stephen Lawrence both in the private prosecution for murder and the Public Inquiry, and the families of victims at the Bloody Sunday Inquiry in Derry and London. 

Also on Thursday 19th October, there is a chance for parents to meet visiting music teachers between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. followed by a concert given by Third Form pupils between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m in the Old Gym. Th size=2>e majority of instrumental teachers will be present and further details can be obtained from the Music School.

On Friday 20th October, there is the Third Form Parents' Conference. The Master will talk to parents in the Theatre at 10:50 a.m. after which parents will have the opportunity to meet their son's and daughter's set teachers.  Pupils should draw up timetables for their parents after discussion with their teachers. Generally, the day is meant to provide an opportunity for parents to meet their children's set teachers to discuss work and progress over this first half of the term.

Friday 20th October also sees the start of the Exeat and it promises to be a busy one for  many pupils and Common Room  with trips to Eastern Europe, Morocco, the United States of America, Malaysia and Jordan. We look forward to welcoming back your sons and daughters on the evening of  Tuesday 31st October.

Sport

In a week that is dominated by house sport, on Tuesday 17th October, the rackets team take on Cheltenham College and the rugby team travel to Newbury Rugby Club to play Bryanston on Thursday 19th October the golf team compete in the second round of the H.M.C. Foursomes competition and the rugby under 15's are playing in the Third Round of the Daily Mail Cup  against St Bartholomew's School, Newbury with a 2:30pm kick off. Further Ahead

The Fireworks Spectacular will be held on Saturday 4th November in the College grounds from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Food, drink and all manner of novelties will be on sale from 7:00 p.m. The bonfire will be lit at 7:30 p.m. and the fireworks display, supplied by Kimbolton Fireworks, will commence at 8:00 p.m. The aim of this Round Square event is to raise money for the Starehe Boys Centre in Nairobi, Tiger Kloof School in South Africa, further education scholarships in Nepal and charities supported by the Rotary Club of Camberley. Security at this years event will be supplied by the same firm that covered so well at the Summer Music and Fireworks evening supplemented by both members of the local constabulary and 2 dog units. Pupil leave-outs will be granted once the festivities are over. Tickets are on sale from the Reception who can be contacted on 01344-444000.

Further ahead on the second weekend of next term, Saturday 20th January, we plan to take all the Third Form to the Theatre in London. We did this with the Fourth Form this term and the event worked well. Therefore we would ask that you do not arrange anything for  your sons and daughters in the Third Form for that Saturday night. The cost of the evening will be of the order of £40. If there are any problems with this trip on either issue, please contact John Arton-Powell as soon as possible as we need to get on and book tickets.
