Wellington - the week ahead
Monday 25th September until Sunday 1st October
General Events
At the start of this week, on Sunday 24th September, it is the Apsley whose parents are invited to the evening chapel service. With the HM of the Blucher preaching, it was my mistake entirely in last week's newsletter to assume that it was the Blucher parents invited and it should have been the Apsley as in the printed calendar. My apologies for any confusion. Traditionally churches are decorated with fruit and vegetables at Harvest-time - and parcels of this fare are taken out to the elderly and the needy. We have decided to challenge each House to raise at least £50 to purchase dried and tinned food to be donated to local hostels who care for the young who have fallen by the wayside and refugees who have fled their countries with little to call their own - all of whom live locally and will benefit greatly from our Harvest Thanksgiving. Also on this Sunday, the choir are recording for a Christmas CD. We hope many will be interested in purchasing a copy nearer the time.
Also on Sunday 24th September, in a change from the printed calendar, the WCA are hosting a Drinks and Canapés party for parents of pupils new to the school in Great School from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. It is an ideal chance to meet your son's or daughter's tutor and HM. All new parents should have received an invite in the post and are asked to reply to Tarla Woolhouse.
On Tuesday 26th September, at 6:00 p.m. in the Concert Room, Bill Badley (O.W.) will give a talk entitled "Musical Journeys of the Arab World". Bill is the editor of the Rough Guide to World Music. Parents are more than welcome to join in with the pupils.
On Thursday 28th September at 6:00 p.m. in the Driver Lecture Room (please note change of venue from the Pink Pavillion in the Calendar), Dr Jon Tabbert of Jon Tabbert Associates will be returning to talk to pupils who are interested in studying at American Universities. Jon has considerable experience in this field and works as a consultant, advising students from many independent schools. Parents are welcome to attend this informal session.
On Friday 29th September at 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel, the Music School is pleased to welcome Oliver King as the new College Organist and full-time teacher in the Music department. For his first organ recital in College, Oliver will play: Bach: Sinfonia to Cantata No.29, Wesley: Air and Gavotte, Buxtehude: Gigue Fugue, Boely: Fantasy and Fugue in B flat, James Macmillan: Wedding Introit and Reger: Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.
From Saturday 30th September until Sunday 1st October there is the Inspired Art Exhibition in the Art School with work from both Fi Channon and Alan Brain. It will open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on both those days and all will be welcome. There will be nearly 100 paintings on display and also music by a local guitarist, a visit by the Mayor, and a raffle to raise funds for the Samaritans. Fi and Alan are artists who have a shared interest in yoga and are inspired to paint by similar feelings and experiences. Their work is truly "inspired" and reflects an inner awareness and appreciation of our world. If you wish you can preview some of their work on their websites www.alanbrain.com and and www.inspiredart.info
The weekend of 30th September and 1st October is a weekend leave including the Monday and so there is no Sunday service and the pupils are expected back by 9:15 p.m. on Monday 2nd October.

Further aheadOn Saturday 7th October, there is a closed Saturday for the fourth form (second block as was). We are planning to take them all to choice of big shows in London. Whilst we will subsidise the trip, there will be a charge of around £40 added to your son's or daughter's end of term account. If you do not wish your child to go on this trip, please e-mail the organiser John Arton-Powell and we will organise an alternative for them. We hope however the experience of going to the theatre with a group of their peers is an experience they will all value and remember.
Looking to a major W.C.A. event next term, an "Out Of Africa" Theme Party and Dance will be held on 24th February 2007 in the Old Gym. The form and the flyer was sent out in the end of term letter in June. There are a few tables lefton a first come first serve basis sohurry and contact Reena Price ( 01628 622355 or 07778 205212) to reserve your table.
Finally a plea from the Charity Shop - we need volunteers! The Charity Shop operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and afternoons and is run by Parent Volunteers who have a lot of fun working together. The Shop sells sweets, crisps and drinks together with any special student requests. If boys and girls come in with only 5p in their pocket there is something that they can buy.The Charity Shop is supported by Round Square and in the past we have raised around £3,000 per term which is donated to charities nominated by Wellington students. We all enjoy running the shop and the boys and girls often drop by for a chat or to collect something from home. It is a great way to meet up with other parents. For new families to the College it is terrific to get to know what goes on in the Wellington Community as well. If you can spare some time we would be really pleased to hear from you. Please email Sally Yarnton . It's not a huge commitment and we would all be delighted to have you on board. We look forward to hearing from you.
