Wellington - the week ahead

Monday 9th October until Sunday 15th October

General Events

Firstly there is a brief reminder from last week that the Chapel service on Sunday 8th October is a full school eucharist and parents of the Benson are invited to attend. The preacher is the Ven. Norman Russell, Archdeacon of Berkshire and the collection is for MRSA Action UK.

On the evening of Thursday 12th October, there is a Parents' Conference for Upper Sixth Form pupils. The Master will speak to parents in the Theatre at 6:00 p.m. and parents will have the opportunity to meet their son's and daughter's set teachers thereafter. The main aims of this meeting are to discuss AS results and what is required to maximise each pupil's grades in the A2 exams this academic year including January retakes of AS papers; also to consider any outstanding UCAS or career choice concerns. Parents are then invited to house finger buffet suppers. Parents should have already received an invite and are asked to reply to Emma Browne if they have not already done so.

On Thursday 12th October there is a W.C.A. lecture when Professor Julian Hunt will talk about the scientific, practical and political aspects of climate change.  Professor Hunt is Chairman of Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants  -  a group working world wide on air pollution modelling and forecasting.   In his research Professor Hunt has developed new approaches to modelling turbulence, atmospheric flows around buildings and over mountains, and the dispersion of environmental pollution.   The talk should be of general interest.

On Friday 13th October, the charismatic and flamboyant Romanian-born violinist and professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Remus Azoitei, is coming back to give a violin masterclass to some of our most senior violinists. It starts at 3:30 p.m., finishes at 8: 30 p.m. and it will take place in the Lewis Room, on the first floor of the Music School. The pupils are Tom Lowe (L), Claire Sledd (Ap), Katie Jillings (O), Amy Tress (O), Leesu Kim (Bl) and two other guest-pupils: they will be playing pieces by Massenet, Ravel, Bach, Brahms, Sibelius, Bruch, Elgar and Wieniawsky. Our piano accompanist for the event will be one of our distinguished visiting piano teachers, Jane Beament. It promises to be a great event so please come and support. For more details please contact Cristian Persinaru, Head of Strings at Wellington College on 01344 444178.

Also on Friday 13th October from 8:00 p.m. the Old Gym will take on a more intimate, club-like atmosphere  to showcase the song-writing talents of some of our musicians.  Rob O'Donovan (C), James Beck (Hg), Ed Guillaume-Smith (L) and Emily Winkworth (Ap) will present an evening of their own songs, with a little help from their friends. Do listen to this trailer to get a taste of what is in store.  Take this opportunity to hear them so that when they become famous, you can say you were there at the very beginning!

The Chapel service on Sunday 15th October is a full school Service of the Word and parents of the Blucher are invited to attend. The preacher is Mark Sayer, Housemaster of the Lynedoch. The Blucher's chosen charity is their adopted school in Uganda, Nabukenya Primary School. The aim is to raise money for the building of this primary school in the very poor area of Mityana. We are also hoping to give some money towards a Christmas celebration for the children and a new set of drums. So far the house has raised in the region of £10,000 for this school.
