Support for Charities

Every year the inventive students here come up with new ways of raising funds for an enormous range of charities. Most of the organisations receiving donations are chosen by the students, not the school, and there is personal and passionate involvement as a result. Here are some examples:

"Someone who'll watch over me"
A retiring collection at a performance of this play for the Medical Foundation of Victims of Torture.

Summer Fireworks
Over £85,000 has been raised over the last 12 years in support of the "Wooden Spoon" charity supporting mentally and physically disadvantaged young people.

"The Chicken Shed Theatre Company"
"A play in a day" raised money for working with disadvantaged and disabled children.  After each main play there is a collection, and charities that have benefited this year are NSPCC, REGAIN (Disabled sports persons) and The Society for the Assistance of Hostages.

Individual community ventures
This year these have included parachute jumps and collection of vouchers for charities of individual choice.

Round Square
A student visited India and worked in a Leprosy mission for a month.

Girl Guides
Money donated for their carnival "float".

Nightingales Hospice in Romania - Choir and Camerata
A concert is being given in Bucharest and Cernavoda to raise money for this worthwhile cause.  Jam doughnuts and pastries are being sold at a number of morning breaks so a cheque can be taken to supplement monies raised. Staff also donate money to support a house mother.

"Worldswim for Malaria"
An inter-house water polo event raised money and awareness as part of the campaign.

Tsunami relief
Doughnut sales raised funds to sponsor lunch at a school in Thailand, affected by the Tsunami for a month. A student skydive raised £800 for a Tsunami Village restoration appeal.

Poverty lunches
These have raised significant sums for the Indian Leprosy Mission, The David Shepherd Trust, Nightingales, the Sebastian Gates Foundation, the Wessex Children's Trust and "Stop Hunger". A sponsored team run raised £500 for "Make Poverty History".

Schools in developing countries
£5,000 was donated to Tigerkloof school in Africa for their sports and service programmes and £3,500 to Yangrima School in Nepal. £1200 was raised by "Rumble in the Jungle" to support Tigerkloof and Thusenang Nursery for the disabled.

Cancer Research.
Monies raised through a speech day sale of lost property and doughnuts.

Round Square Prince Alexander Fund
£300 was raised at Saturday night Socials and a further £800 was donated.

"Daisy's Dream"
Participation in the Athens Marathon raised £800 for "Daisy's Dream", a local organisation helping bereaved children, plus £500 to the NSPCC, £500 to Nightingales and £1000 to Tigerkloof.

Actionaid
A sponsored run raised £400 for Actionaid.

Earthquake Disaster Appeal.
The collection in chapel of over £1000 was raised following this disaster, and distributed through Camberley Rotary and Rotary International to send shelter and aqua boxes to the Islamabad area.  A report on their use can be found at www.shelterbox.org/gujarat.html  £1500 was also raised in conjunction with St John's Parish Church.

Blucher
The Blucher has adopted a primary school in Uganda for which the house is raising funds.  This is in conjunction with St Sebastien's Church which held a fundraiser at Wellington on New Year's Eve to support the project.

November fireworks
The annual fireworks spectacular raised £7500 for School and local community charities.

The Minibus Concert
Wellington College Jazz Orchestra plays an annual concert that has enabled the Crowthorne minibus to be purchased and kept on the road.  The bus provides transport for those in the local community who are unable to use public transport.  The Jazz Orchestra also puts on an annual eve of speech day concert for the benefit of local charities.  Beneficiaries have been Meningitis Research, The Crowthorne trust and the Gurkha Welfare Trust who will benefit from the 2006 proceeds also.

Sports Club
The sports club continues to offer facilities free of charge to Ravenswood on a Wednesday and Thursday morning.  The "Think Pink" tennis tournament raised money for Breast Cancer Charities, and the Triathlon scheduled for June will similarly raise money for local causes.

Amnesty Society
Students have been running human rights based activities, writing letters and supporting campaigns.

MS Society
Wellington provides the Fug Room free of charge to the MS Society for physiotherapy classes.
