Any Wellington nerves  were settled early in the game when No. 8 Ed (Pn) went over for a converted try just 3 minutes into the contest. QEGS responded 4 minutes later with a penalty, but the next 20 minutes saw a physically dominant performance from Wellington both in defence and attack. Despite the torrential rain both teams attempted to play attractive rugby, but inevitably there were a few handling errors, before Wellington scored again on the cusp of halftime from a series of close-range pick and drives, finished off by 2nd Row Rory (Bd), a score again converted by Full Back Inigo (Hl). Wellington continued the pressure in the second half, extending their lead with tries from Jack (Hl), Finn (S) and Sila (T), finally running out 31 – 8 winners in a contest that showcased the strength in depth of school rugby.

Director of Sport, Mr Pratt had this to say:

We are hugely proud of everyone involved with the team and group – players, parents and extraordinarily dedicated coaches, but special mention must go to team captain, Tom, who led the side with distinction before injury prevented him taking part in the final. The final being played at Twickenham continues to feel fitting for the competition, with both teams contributing to a brilliant day that will live long in their memories.

Two-time National Cup-winning coach, Mr Murray shared these words:

I couldn’t be more proud of the whole squad but in particular Ed, Ryan and skipper for the day OT. They deserve every accolade and plaudit one can muster. The way they rallied around Tom who dislocated his shoulder the week before and the way they have carried themselves the whole season has been so impressive. They have formed such a strong brotherhood and have pursued perfect performance all season. They have written their own chapter into the history of Wellington rugby and will be able to not only dip into their own memories but also watch back the epic performance on YouTube for years to come. Having had the privilege of coaching in two finals and watching two teams claim the trophy I think retirement is in order for me! I hope many of the boys get to walk and play on that hallowed turf again but if they don’t then when they sit in the crowd as adults they can turn to the person next to them and say “I got to win a national championship with my best mates from school out on that pitch.” That is truly something special to cherish.
