Fifth Form results break all records

Wellington College pupils have achieved the highest ever results in the school’s history in their GCSE and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) exams.

57.9 per cent of grades were A* or grade 7, and over 88 per cent were at A*/A or 7/6 with more than half the entire year group attaining A* or A grades in all their GCSE exams.

25 GCSE pupils secured 10 A* grades or more and 60 pupils scored straight A*/A grades. Amongst the top performers were Hugh Grindon with 13 straight A* grades, and four pupils who received 12 straight A* grades: Robert Cootes, Kirstin Gordon, Flo Rooney, and Eldar Safarov.

Alex Shoff, who has recently been made captain of the USA Under 19 cricket team, received the equivalent of 11 A*s and 2 As in his MYP/GCSE results; Josh Basham, who was selected for the England U16 rugby team whilst revising over the Easter holidays, secured nine A* grades and one A; not to be outdone, Rory McMichael achieved the equivalent of 11 A*s and 2 As in his MYP/GCSE results whilst also training with and being selected for the Scotland U16 rugby side.

Including the IB MYP candidates, who all took Maths and English GCSE as well as completing the IB MYP curriculum, 31 pupils achieved nothing lower than an A* in any of the GCSE exams they took and a remarkable 102 pupils, over half the year group, achieved A* and A grades in all their GCSE exams.

These outstanding results come as Sir Anthony Seldon steps down to take up the post of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Buckingham.

Sir Anthony Seldon said: “I’m so pleased that we’ve had the best ever results as I leave the College and I wish these wonderful students and Julian Thomas all the best for the future.”
