Many congratulations to the Wellington College Polo Team of Niels van der Hoeven (R), James Crossley (M), Ossia Montgomerie (C) and Ned Hine (S) whose brilliant play ensured victory in this year’s Copenhagen Cup held at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 21st May.

For the first time in the competition’s history, eight teams competed for the most prestigious trophy in schools’ polo – Cheltenham, Eton, Harrow, Marlborough, Millfield, Radley, Stowe and Wellington. The Wellington quartet had qualified for the Cup competition but a tough draw against a strong Millfield team was the first challenge of the day. A gripping contests ended  with the College winning 2-1 which meant a final showdown against Cheltenham College. In the showpiece event, the Wellington riders were all superb and a final score line of 4-1 meant that the Copenhagen Cup was theirs.

Third Former, Ned, not only won the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament but his horse, Toyota, carried off the accolade of Best Pony. For Upper Sixth Formers, Niels and James, it was a perfect end to their sparkling polo careers at the College. And for Fifth Former, Ossia, it was a fitting end to her first full season in the senior team.

Wellingtonians have won national titles in hockey, rugby, shooting, golf and rackets over the past 12 months…they can now add polo to the list too!
