Enabling students to learn well and make great progress is both an art and a science. In this introductory course, we will begin by framing the programme with the question ‘why educate?’ to establish what we believe to be the purpose of education, as this should inform many of the decisions we take in our classrooms. We will then consider some of the more rigorous research suggesting the key influences on learning, and discuss the extent to which this research applies in our own settings and to our practices.
