Friday night, the G.W. Annenberg was filled with excitement for our annual Jazz Concert!
The evening began with seven stunning songs performed by the Concert Band, conducted by Anthony Bailey. From Wicked to Timberlake, the performers showcased their versatility and put a jazz twist on modern pop and musical theatre songs. Wellington’s a cappella group, the ‘Wellingtones,’ performed Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars and I Need Your Love by Ellie Goulding, eloquently layering pure vocals to create beautiful renditions of songs we’re used to hearing with high levels of music production.
After the interval, the audience was blown away by the Bagpipes and Rock Band, directed by Angus Ingram, David Birnie, and Roger Proctor. Their song of choice, La Boum, highlighted the vast range of musical talent we have at Wellington.
Finally, the Big Band topped off the concert with a varied repertoire, showcasing a timeline through jazz music and transforming songs such as Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney into a jazz-stylized piece. Directed by Will Heathcote, the students enjoyed coming together to showcase all the hard work they had put in this year. Vocal performances from Bella C, Theo B, and Isabel H captivated the audience with their confidence and musicality.
We love watching our musicians blossom, and Friday night highlighted their incredible talent and professionalism.
Proceeds from the concert were donated in support of the Crowthorne Minibus and the Wellington College Arts Fund.
The Crowthorne Minibus is a small, independent charity entirely run by volunteers and has been operating successfully since 1988. The charity has played an important role in providing residents of Crowthorne with the opportunity to participate in everyday activities such as shopping or visiting the theatre—things many take for granted. We feel very fortunate to be able to host events like the Jazz Concert to support these important charities.
