The Montgomery Instrumental Competition took place on Friday 10 June in the beautiful Waterloo Hall. Twelve Third  and Fourth Form finalists competed for the prestigious title, selected from over 30 pupils who applied for the heats earlier in the term.

We were delighted to welcome Tim Johnson, Precentor and Director of Music at Eton College to adjudicate the event, who commented on ‘what a wonderful evening of music-making it was and how difficult it was to select a winner’!

After an excellent adjudication, which included many helpful tips and comments for our young musicians, the placings were announced as follows:

Runners-up were Stephanie O (Ap) – Piano, Will O’L (Bn) – Trombone and Nicholas M Z (T) – Violin, and the overall winner was Linda Z (Ap) – Bassoon.

Linda performed with great musical and technical flair and in Tim Johnson’s words:

“You don’t hear bassoon playing as good as that very often.”

Well done to all the finalists, it was a wonderful showcase event.
