New Wellington College pupil, Shriyaa V, has immediately served notice that she is an exceptional mathematician. While at her previous school Cargilfield, Edinburgh she was encouraged to take part in The British Society for the History of Mathematics School Prize. Her entry, ‘The Power of Nothing (and other discoveries)’ won first prize, and explored the seminal moment when the Indian mathematician Bramhagupta first codified the rules for zero in the 7th century, a discovery that marked the turning point in mathematical history, and one that originated quite literally from nothing.
Shriyaa, who moved from Edinburgh this summer, is enjoying Wellington life to the full: she has already joined the Maths Society and taken part in a national competition. As well as her academic interests, she is hoping to get involved in College drama productions, having been inspired by a Wellington show she saw at the Edinburgh Fringe. She is looking forward to lots of sport as well, although at the moment she is sidelined due to a skateboarding injury – which, as Bramhagupta might have said, we hope is nothing too serious!
