Wellington College has been chosen as one of the finalists in the Wellbeing and Mental Health Initiative Award category at the Boarding Schools’ Association – BSA Awards 2020.

The College has been nominated for the ground-breaking work it has done around Well Being, but namely for the launch of its first-ever Community Mental Health Day, in February 2020.

The day was designed to be inclusive, creative, and advocated against the social stigma of mental health issues. Through a series of talks and workshops, it facilitated an inspiring conversation between parents, staff, and students, strengthening our community and cultivating progressive thinking.

Wellington welcomed 40 speakers and Well Being practitioners who delivered over 75 talks and workshops on topics spanning a spectrum of issues, including, addiction, eating disorders, depression, and resilience. In addition, a wide range of experts gave workshops on mental health in sport, the unconscious brain, spirituality in mental health, eating for good mental health, financial wellbeing, and last, but by no means least, the importance of creating and managing mentally healthy organisations and departments. Guest speakers included award-winning authors and mental health campaigners Hope Virgo, Dave Chawner, Luke Sutton, and Rachel Kelly. Harlequins rugby club, Red Hot Yoga, Mindspace, the Surrey Care Trust, MHFA England, The Happy Kitchen, and Young Minds were just a few of the organisations that attended.

Delyth Lynch, the College mental health lead said: ‘I am delighted that we have been nominated for such an important award. The Wellington Community places great emphasis on the importance of Well Being in the curriculum and beyond. We’re all working hard to ensure young people have the confidence to raise issues and seek help, and it’s wonderful that our efforts are being recognised.’

The winner will be announced at the Annual BSA Conference for Heads, which takes place virtually via Zoom on Tuesday and Wednesday, 22 and 23 September.
