Wellington service trip to Tanzania

In July a group of Wellingtonians travelled to Tanzania on a Service Learning trip. Service Learning is Wellington’s unique service programme which connects the academic subjects which pupils are studying with meaningful social projects in the UK and around the world. As well as spending two days working in local schools which are committed to fighting poverty through education, pupils engaged in a live Service Learning design project where they spent four days at Shanga, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and empowering the local disabled community. Other activities involved a two-day camping cultural experience alongside the Maasai at Lake Natron and also a safari. Thanks to the efforts of all, the pupils raised just under £2,000 and a range of their products is being sold in the Shanga shop. All proceeds go to the Shanga foundation, helping bridge the gap between education and disability in the community.
