Wellington Academy

Wellington Academy has seen record-equalling examination results in recent years, following its 'outstanding' OFSTED rating for boarding.

Thanks to the generous donation of £2 million by a parent and governor of the College and huge investment by the government, the Wellington Academy opened its doors in 2009 on the site of Castledown School. The whole community is now benefiting from this hub of learning which includes a 300-seat theatre and a dedicated Business and Enterprise suite, and which currently educates over 1000 students.

In 2015, the Academy received its best ever results at GCSE with over 50% of pupils achieving five A*-C grades including Maths and English. Soon afterwards, OFSTED visited the Academy for a boarding inspection in which they rated both the safety and protection of children, and the leadership and management of the boarding provision as “good”.  However, it was the “outstanding” rating for care that pleased Principal Dr Mike Milner the most, and confirmed the Academy’s growing reputation as a school that sees the welfare of its pupils as paramount.

Numerous joint activities and events are organised by and for the staff and pupils of both the College and the Academy which take place throughout the year. Some have an academic focus (for example staff professional development, Maths workshops, creative writing, debating) while others are based on sports, the arts or leadership.
