The David Lofthouse Award was created in 2022 to honour the remarkable legacy of a pupil who left a profound impression on our community.  Our new film tells David’s story while shining a light on the support Wellington can offer to other pupils facing significant physical challenges.

David, who has quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and graduated from Wellington in 2022, came to us from St Neot’s prep school and inspired all those around him while at College.  Along with a close handful of school friends, he established The Cerebral Palsy Trust, raised funds for groundbreaking surgeries and built a partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital.  Championed by staff and peers, he embraced every aspect of school life, forging lifelong friendships and completing ‘The Kingsleys’ 5km on foot.

The bespoke award in David’s name, offers support to pupils who face significant physical challenges in their own lives. Any school, parent or pupil who would like to find out more should contact the Admissions department who will be delighted to help.

David has recently graduated from Warwick University with a First Class Honours degree in Politics and International Studies. Of his time at Wellington College, he says: “If you’re a pupil with different needs, Wellington won’t be scared of that difference. They’ll only look for a way to intertwine it with the existing College community.  I had an unbelievable experience and felt that everyone was behind me, willing me to succeed. This award is a chance for people to really change their lives.”

Jack Murray, David’s Housemaster in The Picton, was instrumental in ensuring that Wellington was a home-from-home for David. The house system promotes a true sense of belonging for all pupils and Jack witnessed the impact of that inclusive environment first-hand. He said “It was not only a joy to see David thrive at Wellington. It was equally powerful to see the profound impact that he had on the pupils and staff around him

David’s school friend, George Evans (Pn 23) says: “We work hard to make sure every pupil loves their life at Wellington. Including David in College life was a privilege.”
