With teams ranging from U14 to U18 boys and a senior girls’ team, the basketball programme is an integral part of Wellington’s sporting culture. The school has developed a strong reputation for its basketball achievements, with players progressing to play at the club level.

Each year, Wellington hosts a range of exciting basketball events, including pre-season tours to Valencia and Barcelona during October half term. These tours offer players the chance to experience competitive basketball in an international setting. In early January, we host our annual Senior Interschool Tournament, which attracts 8-10 teams from independent schools. The tournament is a highlight of the year, and Wellington’s Senior Boys team achieved great success in 2020, winning the tournament and going on to have an undefeated season.

Basketball is a Tier 3 sport in Michaelmas, a Tier 2 sport in Lent, and a Tier 4 sport in the Summer Term. During the Michaelmas term, each team plays one fixture per half-term, with additional Friday night fixtures for U16 boys and a mixed-age girls’ team. In the Lent term, teams play approximately every three weeks.

Wellington’s basketball programme is supported by a team of experienced coaches, both internal and external. Some of our top players also play for local club sides, while senior players take on leadership roles, supporting the development of junior players and helping to foster a strong team environment.
