Any music tour has a certain amount of excitement associated with it, the sense of excitement of performing in different venues, of staying in new places and meeting new people as well as eating different food. Our trip to Northern Spain was well prepared – we had music by the Spanish Renaissance composers Vittoria and Guerrero; a string quartet to accompany Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater; a typical English anthem by Parry and some spirituals from Tippett’s A Child of our Time; a home-grown composition by 4th formers Kinna Whitehead and some virtuosic violin pieces played by Mira Steenbrugge.
We did not expect the welcome at our concerts to be so electrifying. We had standing room only in the large chapel of Burgos Cathedral and a standing ovation by 700 in the old cathedral of Salamanca. Two other successful performances in Melgar and Avila added to the experience of this trip and we all came away thinking that this had been the trip of a lifetime and one never to be forgotten. Congratulations must go to all singers and performers who performed with such professionalism and with such quality.
