Wellington Greenpower Team Secures Double Podium Finish and Goodwood Qualification

Wellington’s DET Greenpower team celebrated a superb victory at the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold on Sunday 13 September, taking first place from a field of 52 cars.
Competing in a 90-minute battery-powered endurance race, Wellington’s car, The Beef, crossed the line an impressive two laps ahead of its nearest competitor. Excellent driving, combined with slick organisation and teamwork from the pit crew, secured a memorable win for the team.
The result means Wellington has now qualified twice over for the Greenpower National Final at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit in October, where the team will be hoping to build on an outstanding season and challenge for a first national podium finish.
The Beef is currently ranked fifth in the country among hundreds of competing teams — a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work, ingenuity and commitment that has gone into the Greenpower project.
Greenpower has become an incredible engineering project at Wellington, giving pupils the opportunity to experience every aspect of designing, developing, testing and racing an electric car. From engineering and problem-solving to race strategy, teamwork and driving, the project brings together skills from across Design, Engineering and Technology in a genuinely competitive environment.
And the project is only gathering pace. A new generation of engineers and drivers will soon begin taking the reins as Wellington looks towards the 2027 season. Third Form pupils should keep an eye out for opportunities to get involved through upcoming assemblies and the Global Citizenship Programme.
There is also plenty happening behind the scenes. Work continues on Wellington’s next-generation Greenpower car, which should soon be rolling on its own wheels before beginning its first development and testing programme around campus.
Congratulations to drivers Polina, Muli, Jasper and Eleonora; pit crew Oliver, Clarke, Chung-Hang and Thomas; and Mr Winter and Mr Carrington on a brilliant result.
