ACADEMIC
The co-curricular dance programme offers a huge array of daily classes at tiered levels, as well as graded examinations in Ballet, with the Royal Academy of Dance. Classes run every day and evening for boys and girls of all abilities in Contemporary, Commercial, Ballet, Tap, Street, Acrobatics, Yoga and much more, so there really is something for everyone regardless of prior training.
We have performance events and workshops throughout the year, with highlights including the annual Dance Show in December. This event showcases all students involved in dance, from beginners to future professionals and is a real high point for so many of our pupils. The inter-house Dance Competition challenges pupils from all houses to develop their own choreographies with an emphasis on teamwork and having fun. Both events are always extremely popular with students, staff and families and create a real buzz around the College. We also offer opportunities for coursework and student-led work to be showcased throughout the year at a variety of termly events. Other initiatives include the Wellington Street Crew Battle, external dance competitions, workshops with visiting professionals, theatre visits and much more, there really are opportunities for everyone.
For the extremely dedicated, talented and driven performers, we offer opportunities for extension through auditioned groups and our scholarship programme. Pupils are awarded scholarships at the end of the Third Form year or can audition for a scholarship on entry to the Sixth Form for new pupils. Our scholarship programme offers regular technique classes, competition and performance experience, guidance on performance development, career information, as well as links with the dance community outside of Wellington. We also offer auditioned performance groups for our Acrobatic (Acro) Team and the Wellington Junior and Senior Dance Companies. In addition, we regularly have pupils entering national-level competitions and companies, including the Dance School Awards and National Youth Dance Company auditions. This offers pupils the chance to take dance to an extremely high level and potentially into their future careers.
Our accolades include multiple wins at The Independent Schools Dance Festival, performing curtain raisers with Avant Garde Dance, ex-pupils performing with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, in MJ the Musical, and with INTOTO Dance in recent years. It is rare to find a College offering such high-level dance training alongside outstanding academic provision, but we can absolutely offer dance pupils a balance of both.
