October, the 13th saw the next generation of young leaders spend a day at Wellington for the school’s 18th annual Heads of Colleges Conference. Head Boys and Girls from across the UK shared and explored many of the challenges and opportunities that will come their way during the coming school year.
The theme of the day was ‘Connectivity: connecting with yourself, your team and your purpose.’ The conference began with a keynote speech, ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’, from Emmie Bidston and Katy Granville-Chapman who talked about the importance of knowing people, and connecting with your hopes, dreams and values. They highlighted the crucial role of love and empathy as the driving forces behind high-performance teams.
The break-out groups and sessions were led by Wellington’s prefect team who were outstanding all day and showed a maturity beyond their years. The day ended with a panel of experts who shared their lessons on leadership from their different experiences in Sport, the Financial World, Entrepreneurship, and Educational Leadership in a Diverse World. This panel discussion was both powerful and authentic due to the vulnerability and honesty they displayed, focusing on how to face setbacks and how to find the courage to confront failure with courage and determination.
How, they asked, can we show vulnerability as leaders while knowing that we are also role models to others? They suggested that finding the answer to this conundrum was the route to true authenticity.
