Wellington College triathletes Liesl D R and Caitlin H have once again demonstrated their exceptional talents in the world of endurance sports. Competing in a highly competitive GB age group triathlon selection race, Liesl achieved a remarkable 2nd place, while Caitlin secured an impressive 3rd. Their outstanding performances have earned them both a coveted spot in the European Triathlon Championships, set to take place next summer in Istanbul. We are incredibly proud of their achievement in reaching such a prestigious level of competition. Well done to both Caitlin and Liesl!
As part of Wellington’s thriving triathlon programme, both athletes have been supported through a broad range of training options designed to fit around their other activities at the College. With a focus on maintaining a balanced, rounded education, Wellington offers 15 sessions per week during the school year, increasing to 17 in the Summer and Michaelmas terms. Pupils are able to train at their own pace, ensuring no risk of overtraining while enjoying a variety of activities.
Training options include pool swimming with qualified triathlon coaches, open water sessions at the nearby British Triathlon-approved Horseshoe Lake, and cycling at Swinley Forest on the school’s mountain bikes. Running sessions are equally flexible, with students encouraged to form small groups or join the friendly, well-attended school running club.
In addition to their upcoming competition in Istanbul, Caitlin and fellow triathlete Nell W, along with Head of Triathlon Katy Granville-Chapman, are set to race at the World Age Group Championships in Torremolinos this October, just before half term. This will provide another exciting opportunity for them to showcase their skills on the international stage.
Katy highlighted the significance of this success: “We have had a steady stream of pupils new to triathlon performing at a high standard at the College, and we’ve had representation at the international level for the last 10 years in a row! I’m super proud to share my experience and love for the sport with our pupils and to maintain the participation and success at Wellington.”
The triathlon club at Wellington College is known for its welcoming atmosphere, where students support each other through a range of races — from beginner-friendly events to high-level GB qualification races. The quirky yet dedicated spirit of the club continues to thrive, encouraging athletes like Caitlin and Liesl to reach new heights on the international stage.
