At Wellington College, musical excellence is not defined by a single performance or qualification. It is defined by a culture.
Achieving Grade 8 or above represents the culmination of years of disciplined practice, technical mastery and artistic maturity. It demands resilience, confidence and a genuine love of performance. We are proud to celebrate a number of pupils who have recently reached this significant milestone.
What makes these accomplishments even more remarkable is the scale of musical excellence across the College.
Wellington currently has over 90 pupils who hold at least one Grade 8 qualification or higher, with some achieving multiple Grade 8 awards across different instruments. To put that into perspective, that number alone could fill every seat in a symphony orchestra.
When musicians of this calibre sit side by side in Symphony Orchestra, Chapel Choir, chamber ensembles or jazz bands, something remarkable happens. Standards rise. Listening deepens. Confidence grows. Individual excellence elevates the collective.
Simon Wiliamson, Director of Arts and Music reflects:
“Grade 8 has always been the absolute goal with any pupil learning an instrument and is an extraordinary personal achievement. It represents a commitment and resilience, not only to practise but also to develop performance and learn all those extra musicianship skills, from aural to sight reading. Students build those skills within ensembles and also develop themselves further working towards diplomas and competitions. It is a great delight to see such success and to congratulate them on their achievements.”
We are delighted to celebrate our most recent Grade 8 and above achievers:

At Wellington, individual success strengthens the collective and the collective inspires the individual.
