Two weeks of ever increasing anticipation built to a crescendo as the 17 houses and 1100 pupils that make up Wellington College gathered in the GWA for House Singing 2023. This year’s theme, Jukebox Musicals*, enthusiastically embraced by the house music reps, allowed for an eclectic mix of songs and styles. Queen, the Spice Girls, Elton John, Earth, Wind and Fire, and the Jackson Five were all popular choices with each song perfectly reflecting the individual character of each house, as did the imaginatively realised teaser videos that foreshadowed each performance.

Congratulations to The Talbot for their winning performance of I’m Still Standing, featuring not only solos, harmonies, and dance moves aplenty but also a stunning solo guitar lick. Worthy mentions to runners up the Anglesey and the Hardinge, and to the Blücher and Harry S for the best solo of the evening.

But perhaps the most iconic moment came at the end when the auditorium combined in anthemic renditions of Frozen and Sweet Caroline, proving beyond doubt that however competitive each house may be, Wellington will always be infinitely greater than the sum of its parts.
