FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DRAMA - Nick Huntington
Hot on the heels of last year’s college musical, ‘Beauty and The Beast’, comes another vibrant, colourful yet thought provoking and inspiring show ‘Legally Blonde’. Musical theatre is a perfect blend of dance, drama, and song, and it excites me to see this talented cast, under the expert direction of Claire Anderson, Clare Cooke and Sean Farrell, performing their socks off and rising to the multi-layered challenges of this high octane show.
‘Legally Blonde’ marks our second show of five this year following on from last term’s exceptional sixth form play ‘Shakespeare in Love’. I hope after tonight, you will come back to watch our middle school play at the end of the Lent term, ‘1984’; having watched a few rehearsals, it promises to be equally spectacular and thought provoking – though I suspect with less pink glitz and a few more blood thirsty rats. We are excited to support another student play written by L6th student Jessica Valentine which will go on for one night only in April before she and the cast set out to perform the show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We fondly remember ‘A Soldier’s Dream’ last March and cannot wait for yet another standout student production under Jess’ sensitive direction. ‘Two Gentlemen of Verona’ follows in May, and marks a new initiative in the drama calendar – a full length outdoor Shakespeare play set in the beautiful surroundings of the College Gardens. This too promises to be a stunning evening – so let us cross our fingers for clement weather!
‘Legally Blonde’ is one of the most performed school shows in the US and UK; it is well loved for its sugar coated optimism and we hope you skip out of the GWA this evening humming the tunes and feeling that joyous sense of positivity that only a musical can bring. Enjoy the show!
