The final of this year’s Montgomery Singing Competition was held in the Old Gym on Friday 7 May. As always, the standard was incredibly high, and a masterclass the previous week (from Louise Crane of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) had helped the finalists to hone their performance craft to a very refined standard.

The feast of music included chansons by Fauré and Debussy, lieder by Schumann, English Song of Finzi, Elgar and Quilter, excerpts from Grand Opera, and some songs on the lighter side. It was a true musical feast.

Congratulations to Matilda (C), a worthy winner, and to runners-up Amelia (W) and Baxter (S). The other finalists were Benedict (Bn), Deuce (T), Alice (A), Maggie (Hg), Pia (W), Jessica (Ap), Jasper (Pn), Izzy (Ap), and Emilie (W). We thank the Master, who introduced the event, Justin Lavender for his wise adjudication, and Mr de Voil who accompanied at the piano throughout the evening.
