Congratulations to Art Historian Olivia R who has won a scholarship to attend a two week Art History course in Italy this summer. The award, run annually to commemorate the former President of the Arts Society, asks students to submit two short essays: one on a work of art they love, and one that they loath.
Lower Sixth former Olivia chose to write about Michelangelo’s David, and Ken Currie’s Three Oncologists, commenting on how Michelangelo captured David’s courage, humanity and heroism, while Currie terrifyingly portrays the doctors immersed in the liminal space between life and death. Olivia, who also studies English and Maths, hopes to read a History of Art degree at Cambridge, before going on to work in the Art world. She says she was ‘first inspired by family gallery visits, and then by a talk given at a subject-choices assembly – and loves the way her English studies complement her understanding of Art History.’
Judging by her success in this competition Olivia clearly has a bright future ahead of her. Congratulations, and we all hope you enjoy your trip to Italy!
