Thursday 24th August was a red-letter day for the GCSE students at Wellington College. Against a backdrop of national concern about a dip in top grades awarded, Wellingtonians achieved results which were stronger than 2019 across every metric. Over 36% of grades awarded were at the very highest level making 9 the most common grade achieved. Almost 2/3rds of the grades were 8s or 9s, with more than 86% of results being 9-7. Congratulations in particular to the 10 students who achieved a clean sweep of 9s.
Wellington Master, James Dahl, had this to say: “The achievements of this year group are nothing short of remarkable. Having lost the final term at their previous schools due to the pandemic, they arrived at Wellington into a world of social distancing, mask-wearing and numerous other restrictions before a second bout of online learning in early 2021. In the face of these immense challenges, they have thrown themselves whole-heartedly into every aspect of life at the College, both inside and outside the classroom, achieving national accolades at sport, producing breath-taking performances on the stage, and proving themselves to be a delight around the school. These superb results, which are stronger than our 2019 GCSE outcomes at all levels, are just reward for years of hard work, resilience and determination. We are hugely proud of this group of Wellingtonians and cannot wait to see what they will achieve in the Sixth Form.”
Well done to them all, and we do indeed look forward to seeing them embark on their A-level or IB Diploma careers when they return to College in September.
