In the final week of the summer holidays Wellington College played host to hundreds of pupils from its local partner schools. As part of its commitment to levelling up and its belief in educational partnership, the College was anxious to give the youngsters a week to remember, and to help prepare them for the challenges they face as they move onto their new schools. Wellington teachers and students worked closely with staff from our partner schools to provide a week that was both challenging and inspiring.
John Craig, Course Director, had this to say:
“I want the young people who came to us to have the opportunity to make memories that will sustain them throughout the summer school week and beyond. When they approach the challenges of their new schools, I want them to do so with enthusiasm and excitement: the connections they make during this catch-up school may be ones that last a lifetime.”
During their week the boys and girls had the chance to take part in a variety of activities, from designing and building a car from scratch to performing on stage. The low-ropes course which, required both balance and bravery was particularly popular, while the Dance workshops allowed some slick routines to be put together to music they knew and love. A theme throughout the week was the value of collaboration and partnership, and the Team Building and Leadership gave them a taste of working together with their friends to solve problems, work collaboratively and think creatively – all whilst being outside in a beautiful environment.
All of the schools who took part in the course in 2021 described a noticeable impact on the students themselves and a calmer, more purposeful start to the academic year for those who were part of the programme. We very much hope that this will be the same this year: certainly judging by the commitment and enthusiasm of the youngsters they had a lot of fun during the week and we wish them all the very best for the coming term.
A big thankyou to all involved – and plans are already being made for more of the same next year
