Our Fourth Form Scholars complete a series of short courses in their weekly scholars sessions covering a wide range of fascinating topics, they are currently undertaking courses entitled ‘Responses to suffering. What is worth commemorating’ and ‘Bloody interesting – an introduction to haematology’.
Following a six week course on Public Speaking led by our Head of LAMDA Ms Hamilton, the students took part in a balloon debate where each student represented a non-western thinker or activist, there was a wonderful range of characters including Yu Gwan-sun, Ho Chi Minh, Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai and Confucius. All the students spoke eloquently and convincingly for three minutes drawing on the skills they had learnt during their course. Annie S was awarded the Peter Mallinson Prize for Academic Extension for her depiction of Sonita Alizadeh.
Annie told us more about her debate:
“I had never heard of Sonita Alizadeh before and when I read about her story, I thought that the way she brought across her point, which was by posting a self-written rap on the internet, was very inspirational as rapping was illegal for girls in Iran at this time. I wanted to share her story with those who hadn’t heard of her or hadn’t thought more deeply about the severity of child marriage. In my debate, I talked about Sonita’s story, how her parents tried to sell her into a forced marriage when she was 10 and therefore prevalence of highlighting individuals who can spread the importance of a topic to a wide range of different people.”
Congratulations to all our Scholars for their thoughtful and well researched portrayal of non-Western politicians, activists and philosophers.
