Just when you thought half term would bring a chance to warm up, MANIACS 2026 has arrived to remind us that comfort is overrated.

At first glance, the challenge sounds slightly ridiculous: get up early, run a lap of Bigside and then willingly plunge into ice-cold water. Yet every year, students sign up in their dozens, returning again and again for a challenge that has become something of a Wellington tradition.

Why?

Because MANIACS is about far more than just enduring 30 seconds of cold water.

The challenge is designed to encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, develop resilience and start their day with a sense of achievement. Completing a run and plunge before most people have even had breakfast requires commitment, discipline and determination – qualities that serve students well far beyond the boundaries of Bigside.

Many participants also report the energising effect of the cold-water plunge itself. While the science around cold-water exposure continues to evolve, advocates often cite increased alertness, improved mood and a heightened sense of wellbeing after taking the plunge. Whether it’s the cold water, the endorphins from exercise, or simply the satisfaction of doing something difficult, there’s no denying the buzz that follows a successful morning session.

Perhaps most importantly, MANIACS creates a shared experience. Students from across the College come together to encourage one another, celebrate progress and embrace a challenge that few people would willingly undertake alone. There is a unique sense of camaraderie that comes from standing around a bucket of ice at seven o’clock in the morning and collectively deciding that this is, somehow, a good idea.

This week marked the official launch of MANIACS RE-ICED 2026, with students gathering on Bigside for the ceremonial “Breaking the Ice” and the start of four weeks of early mornings, cold plunges and house competition. As if the ice baths weren’t challenging enough, participants were also greeted by persistent rain, making the opening session an especially memorable start to this year’s competition.

To earn the title of MANIACS RE-ICED Champion, competitors must complete one lap of Bigside and one ice plunge every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 2 to 25 June.

Alongside individual bragging rights, the coveted Mars Bar House Trophy will be awarded to the House with the highest number of qualifying participants, ensuring that every run and every plunge contributes towards House pride.

With the ice ordered, the buckets ready and the first brave students already taking the plunge, MANIACS RE-ICED 2026 is officially underway.

The challenge has been set. The water is cold. The competition is on.
