The Wellington College Peace and Conflict Institute (WCPCI) has been launched with the support of Rev Dr Gary Mason of the charitable organisation Rethinking Conflict.

Gary has worked for years in both Belfast and around the world in promoting peace and is the ideal person to help inaugurate the WCPCI. The aim of this is to give Wellingtonians direct experience of peace processes so that they can understand the core issues and challenges in ending conflict.

Pupils have been invited to submit applications to join and those selected will spend the year studying the recent history of Northern Ireland. A combination of lectures, workshops and guided reading will prepare them for a three-day visit to Belfast next summer where Gary will arrange meetings with leading figures on both the Unionist and Republican sides.

The team of pupils will produce a documentary to share their experiences and encourage others to work on building lasting peace.

Each year the WCPCI will focus on a different society but use the same format of studying, visiting and recording in order to help educate others.
