On Tuesday 20 June 2023, Third Form students from Wellington College headed towards beautiful Pembrokeshire to experience the Wales Experiential Programme on sustainability. This programme allowed students to explore one of the most incredible coastlines in the UK, with an immersive insight into the global issues tackled by conservation and sustainability projects through awesome adventures.
Students had the opportunity to deepen their learning of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that align with Wellington’s sustainability priorities in education according to SDGs 3, 4, 5, 7, 12 and 13.
During these four days of epic adventures, students explored the ocean through ‘coasteering’; they learned about marine life, ocean pollution and coastal ecosystems while enjoying jumping off rocks and cliffs. Students went on several coastal walks where they learned to ID critical species, the role that ecology plays within a coastal ecosystem and litter-picked microplastics. They had a fantastic time visiting the ‘Bug Farm’, where they participated in several workshops to learn how society can feed a growing population and look after wildlife simultaneously. To close the trip, the students enjoyed a ‘boat safari’ around Ramsey Island, where they learned about dolphins, seals and birds and the importance of kelp forests, coastal ecosystems and their impact on climate action.
