In a tradition that dates back to the 14th Century, the Payment of Dues ceremony commemorates the time when naval ships entering London were required to pay a levy – a barrel of port – to the Constable of the Tower of London. To celebrate the 360th Anniversary of their formation, this year’s dues were paid by the Royal Marines – and two of Wellington’s finest RM cadets were invited to take part in the historic occasion.

Lower Sixth Formers, Leo S and Saffron E were chosen to represent Wellington College, due reward for their wholehearted commitment to the Marine detachment and the exemplary way they conduct themselves. When asked about the occasion, Saffron had this to say: ‘We marched past the Traitors Gate, stood to attention next to the Byward Tower watching the Royal Marines march past, before entering the Tower of London where we watched the Marines pay their dues in the ceremony. It was such an honour to be part of it all, accompanied of course by music from The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines. Later we had the opportunity to speak with high-ranking Marines and learn more about the unique role the Royal Marines play in safeguarding the Nation’s future. It is certainly an experience I will never forget, and I know that Leo feels the same.”

Congratulations to them both for representing Wellington with such dignity, and for being right at the heart of the living history of the Armed Forces.
