Wellington College’s outstanding golf programme has once again cemented its place among the nation’s elite, as the College secured the prestigious Gerald Micklem Matchplay Trophy for a third consecutive year.

Held at the historic Woking Golf Club, the Micklemchamps is one of the most revered competitions in school golf. Established in 1954, the tournament brings together eight of the UK’s leading public schools and celebrates the legacy of one of England’s most distinguished amateur golfers.

This year’s competition saw Wellington produce another exceptional performance. After impressive victories over Winchester in Round 1 and Eton in Round 2, the team progressed to a thrilling final against Stowe.

With a composed and confident display, Wellington’s players rose to the occasion once more. The team—Ellie L, Jamie M, Leo F, Benny A, Eidan J and Will M—demonstrated both skill and resilience, delivering when it mattered most to secure the title and complete a remarkable hat-trick of wins.

Reflecting on the achievement, Head of Golf Freddie Edmunds praised the group’s journey and character:

“What a year this group are having! This is my first cohort of golfers I have seen through from the start of Wellington to the end—they have been amazing and finishing in style! Well done guys.”

The victory is made even more special given the continuity of the squad, marking a full-circle moment for a group that has developed together throughout their time at the College.

Wellington also extended thanks to Woking Golf Club for hosting the event, described as “a magical place to come and compete every year,” and to Old Wykehamists’ Golfing Society for organising a tournament so rich in history and tradition.

This third consecutive triumph not only highlights the strength and consistency of Wellington’s golf programme, but also reflects the dedication, teamwork and excellence of its student athletes.

A remarkable achievement—and one that sets a new benchmark for future generations.
