If September brings all the excitement of the new school year, then the first week of October sees the culmination of the ever-popular House Dance, the first major mass participation competition in the Wellington calendar.

This years House Dance explored the theme of Our Planet, with each house taking themes from different episodes of the popular David Attenborough series, and tasked to choreograph and perform an large ensemble piece and a small dance interpretation.

In front of a packed-out GWA audience, the Combermere proved a hugely popular big dance win, with many clever and unique ways to express the theme of human impact on our Planet. Their inventiveness culminated in an incredibly well-rehearsed and timed dance. In the small dances the Talbot set the theatre on fire with their interpretation of Inferno. Intricate and complex choreography was combined with great music choices to create a crescendo and wow the audience.

Runners-up in the Large Dance category were the Benson exploring Caves and digging for “solid gold” to a backtrack of an iconic Bruno Mars number, and the Hopetoun for their exquisite rendering of Deserts, while in the small dance the Apsley and Murray both demonstrated poised contemporary interpretations of Shallow Seas and Mountains.

The event concluded with the entire GWA dancing along to Just Dance with beautiful enthusiasm and positivity, proving – along with all the carefully rehearsed and performed entries – that Dance lies close to the heart of all Wellingtonians, who seldom miss a chance to dance with diamonds in the soles of their feet.

Congratulations to them all, and especially so to Caroline Kenworthy and Clare Cooke for organising and overseeing such a stunning event
