Global Citizenship exists to help pupils understand their role in the world, empower them to become changemakers to engage in positive social change. There are a wide variety of programmes that pupils can be involved with, as a snapshot of the first half of term shows.

Term started with great news for the EduSpots Reading Buddies team, who were awarded ‘International Student Group of the Year 2022’ for their literacy support work. EduSpots is a Ghanaian and UK based NGO that helps provide training and connections to equip local volunteers to drive community-based change in education.

The Outdoor & Adventure Fifth and Lower Sixth pupils also received their certificates this half term for their ‘Assessment in Personal Proficiency’ in either rock climbing, low ropes or mountain biking. This certificate allows the pupils to train as an assistant instructor, which is underway now, and will be put to the test in April and May when pupils from local state schools come to enjoy a session of low ropes or paddling on Swan Lake.

This term Sustainability pupils are undertaking a carbon literacy course with the Carbon Literacy Project, at the end of which they may be certified as a carbon literacy expert.

Community Action projects link with community partners; examples include the Crowthorne mural renovation and the Kennel Lane Partnership. The mural renovation is in conjunction with Crowthorne Parish Council. This sees two art scholars renovating the Millennium mural at one end of Crowthorne High Street, not an easy task in the cold and wet, but they are on track to finish this term in line with their deadline.

Kennel Lane School is a SEND school in Bracknell, one of three we have partnerships with along with Portesbery School and Carwarden House. The aim of the partnerships is to foster understanding, empathy and friendship. This half term pupils have been getting involved in Plague Doctor mask making, Chinese New Year celebrations and a very tense game of football!

School visits include those to St Sebastian’s Primary, where Fifth Form pupils have been highly engaged with very young children still learning school routines, commenting on the progress of younger pupils they work with, and showing their maturity and dedication to help these pupils develop.

Publications this half term include BaCoN, and the first newsletter from the Cultural Change group, aimed at pupils, based on requests from the Prefect body and Safeguarding team.

Welly Leaders is working on a range of projects including ‘Pyjamas for Nepal’, a fashion show focussed on the sex and consent work in College, and partnership with the Vineyard Church building packs for ‘GrowBaby’. The Poverty & Inequality Social Justice group are having a textbook drive to answer a need from partner schools (WCLA). They will be collecting GCSE and A Level textbooks and ask anyone wanting to donate to please bring any old textbooks to school after half term.

Third Form pupils continue with their rotations around Arts Award, Dialogue Across Difference, Enrichment and talks on Social Justice topics.
