Located near the sports facilities and adjacent the Apsley, the Wellington College Health Centre has 9 bedrooms, full day facilities and is staffed 24/7 by a wonderful team of committed nurses. Male and female pupils are nursed in separate areas and there is also a clinical isolation bedroom for use if required.

The Health Centre staff are trained to deal with both illnesses and injuries which may occur to pupils, staff or visitors on site. Many of the nurses have specialist training so the Health Centre can offer asthma clinics, travel and vaccination advice, diabetes monitoring, sexual health and smoking cessation advice, as well as many other services.

Physiotherapy

A physiotherapist attends the Health Centre every weekday. This service is run under private contract but is covered by the school BUPA scheme and most private insurers. There is also a sports massage therapist who runs a weekly clinic and a chiropodist who operates on an occasional basis.

Head of Student Emotional Health and Wellbeing

The College introduced the new role of Head of Student Emotional Health and Wellbeing in September 2021 and was delighted to appoint Dr Jenny Griggs. Jenny is a clinical psychologist with 18 years’ experience working in a CAMHS (Children and Adult Mental Health Service) within the NHS and subsequently in her own independent practice in Wokingham. With close ties to the University of Reading, Jenny specialises in CBT and has a passion for working with teenagers and young adults.

Jenny’s broad role has been designed to drive forward the momentum of Wellington’s wellbeing provision as the College builds the right support structures to help current and future pupils. She has oversight of all pupils who are struggling with mental health and will ensure they receive the right care at the right time. This might be via Wellington’s expanding team of highly-trained school counsellors or through external support.

"Many Wellingtonians go on to lead busy, fast-paced lives and the mental health skills and strategies that we equip them with at school will serve them well in later life.  Talking openly about mental health becomes a habit from a young age."

Dr Jenny Griggs

The Health Centre serves both day and boarding pupils, and works in partnership with Wokingham Health Centre. Doctors hold morning surgeries from 7.30am to 9.00am, Monday to Friday and the College Medical Officer, Dr Helen Rutherford, oversees clinical practice in the Health Centre.

The College also employs counsellors who are particularly experienced at working with teenagers.
