Athletics
Well done to Arthur (R) who won the South England Athletic Championship last weekend in the 300M and we now wish him the best ahead of The National championship in February.
Badminton
Played Downe House, Played 12 Won 11, Lost 1
The results show matches played across four pairs (DH1–DH4). Overall, Wellington won the vast majority of matches against Downe House, frequently by clear margins. Downe House recorded just one win (DH1, 21–8), while all other matches were Wellington victories. Wellington was especially dominant in the DH3 and DH4 pairings, where they won every match played.
Basketball
A big well done also to the boys U18 basketball team who competed brilliantly in the Boys U18 Independent Schools Tournament, hosted at Wellington.
Fencing
Lost to Eton 1:2 (Foil W 45:44, Sabre L 44:45, Epee L 30:45). Players of the match Radley (R) and Riya (T).
Football
The boys 1st XI began the term by competing in the inaugural CISL 8v8 tournament, hosted by Abingdon School at Tilsley Park. The small-sided format created a fast-paced and technically demanding environment, placing a strong emphasis on ball retention, decision-making under pressure, and collective organisation. The squad approached the day with maturity and professionalism, and their attitude and application were a clear reflection of the work completed last term. The tournament provided an excellent early benchmark for performance and highlighted how effectively the group has transitioned into the main football term.
The rest of WCFC faced Berkhamsted School in a full block of fixtures across the U14, U15, U16, and U18 age groups. There were several encouraging outcomes, with the U18D, U15A, U15B, and U15D teams all recording deserved victories. In particular, the U15B side delivered a highly accomplished performance, demonstrating strong cohesion, intensity, and attacking intent throughout. The U18B fixture concluded in a competitive draw, reflecting a well-balanced contest and a disciplined team display.
While not all teams were rewarded with results on this occasion, the Berkhamsted fixtures proved to be a valuable developmental opportunity. Players were exposed to high levels of physicality and tempo, and there were many positive signs in terms of effort, resilience, and willingness to compete. Coaching staff were encouraged by the response shown across squads, particularly in how players adapted to challenges and maintained standards throughout their matches.
Overall, the week represented a strong start to the term. The combination of the CISL 8v8 tournament and the Berkhamsted fixtures provided meaningful competitive exposure, clear learning points, and a solid platform from which to build as the football season continues.
Hockey
Well done to the boys 2nd XI who started off with a fixture against Charterhouse and got a good 3-2 win in a tight and well contested match.
Netball
Played 18, Won 8, Lost 9, Drew 1
A well contested first week of fixtures in netball.
A tight match throughout for the 2’s with Wellington’s composure and teamwork tipping the scale at the very end. The 12-person squad ensured that Wellington had the advantage of fresh legs and could keep the opposition guessing with tactical changes. As the lead traded hands, and St John’s found accuracy at the post, a dogged and clinical centre court were instrumental in retaining possession and preventing the opposition from pulling away. While all players helped to secure the win, a special mention must go to CC (E) for her numerous interceptions and steady leadership and to Maya (A) who was fearless on her shooting and awarded player of the match. The final score 30-27 to Wellington.
A good first game for the 15Es with a compliment from the opposition about their enthusiasm and for creating a lovely atmosphere. Having gone down in the first quarter, Wellington then had a solid middle two quarters where we brought the score up to an even 20-20 with some excellent shooting from Isla (H) and quick movements from Iris (C). Final score was 30-20 to Cranleigh U16Es (year above!). Players of the match were Amelie (A) and Amber (A). A special shout out to the U14C’s too who were fantastic, winning 16-8, taking on advice, being very respectful to the umpire and super supportive of each other, well done.
Skiing
Alex (R) has been selected to represent Great Britain (U14) at the upcoming FIS Children’s International Race. British ski team (U14) with racing in Andorra
Rugby
Well done to OW Jordy (Hl leaver) who has been playing for Hong Kong U20 in Singapore.
Team of the week
The Netball U16B team, who had a strong start to the season with a 31-4 win. The girls did well to turn over a lot of loose ball and to capitalise off intercepts and turnovers. Well done girls!
Sporting Policies & Procedures of Note
Team Selection – this will always be done by staff to the best of their ability and in a fair manner – should a pupil have a sporting overload (i.e. too many sporting commitments), this should in the first instance be flagged to the tutor or HM by the pupil, where possible.
Absence – should a pupil need to miss a sporting commitment, this must be requested with 3 weeks’ notice via the Parent Portal. If the absence occurs on a Saturday for an unauthorised reason and a pupil misses training, this will be an automatic Behavioural Keep In and if a pupil misses a fixture, this would be an automatic Detention.
Injuries/Illness – should a pupil need to miss a sporting commitment due to injury/illness, this must be reported to the Health Centre, often doing this via the HM or Matron may be most appropriate.
SOCS/Calendar – please do continue to use the school calendar and SOCS to obtain the most up to date sports fixture information.
Saturdays (Fixtures / Training) – where possible we continue to aim for fixtures for all those pupils in team sports on Saturdays and where this is not possible we will offer training sessions (in some cases, training may involve a rota where space is limited e.g. Squash, but the rota will be advised to pupils in advance).
Match Teas – parent match tea locations and timings will be listed in the weekly Sports Programme and we are aiming to place these in locations to best provide for all sports.
Coaching Philosophy – the main coaching impact will undoubtedly occur midweek and on fixture days we continue to encourage staff/coaches to avoid using too much direct instruction, except in cases of major issues or safety, but instead, encourage staff to use well-timed questions to encourage a problem-solving approach from pupils, albeit this will continue to be combined with appropriate praise and encouragement too.

We welcome you back for the start of another busy term and wish everyone the best of luck and fun on the sports fields and courts this term, before you know it, we will be talking about the Kingsleys!
The week before Christmas maintained the sporting pace of last term and saw closing fixtures for the senior 1st team girls hockey, boys rugby, boys football and girls netball versus Gordon’s. Well done to all involved in some excellent fixtures.
Rackets
The Rackets Club were at Queen’s for the boys singles and girls doubles championships before Christmas. Huge congratulations go to Georgia (Hn) and Georgia (T) for winning the Robin Geffen Cup, becoming national doubles champions. Well done to Olli (L) who won three tight matches to reach the 1/4 final of the Renny Cup. In the juniors, Tabs (T) and Frankie (A) fought very well to reach the U16 girls doubles semi-final, where a Marlborough pair proved to be a little too strong. Will (S) (a week after winning the college singles title) played exceptional Rackets, and reached match point in his semi final, of the U16 boys. With lots of promising performances from other juniors, the future looks very bright.
Skiing
Well done to Seb (Bn) and Emily (Ap) who were back on the FIS ski race circuit over the Christmas break; racing in Italy, Switzerland and Austria, Emily scored a Personal Best in her Slalom and even landed a place on the podium, well done both.

Last week closed out yet another bumper term of sport, which has seen 96 teams put out across 17 sports and playing 508 fixtures!
We are also one term into this year’s interhouse sports competition and, whilst there is much to play for, we say an early congratulations in the Senior girls to the Combermere, in the Senior boys to the Picton, in the Junior girls to the Apsley and in the Junior boys to the Lynedoch.
Badminton
The Wellington badminton team had a mixed and men’s doubles match at home against Bradfield on Thursday, dominating every court and winning 8–0. Each pair put in hard work, winning every point with resilience. Each game was hard fought, with every pair showing some amazing long rallies, but eventually winning out in the end. Special mention to Sasha (Bl), who has received man of the match four matches in a row and put in a great performance with some excellent smashing and receiving, and always tries his best in each match.
On Saturday the Wellington badminton team fought hard, winning against the Wellington Sports Centre badminton team, beating them 36–9. Everybody played with the utmost passion and intensity, showing grit in every shot. Special mention to Aerial (O) and Yurii (M), who, even though they were playing for the other side, had some amazing shots and played really well throughout the match.
Football
Despite some tough midweek cup games for the boys 1st XI, the boys U15A team did record an ISFA Cup round 2 win, and the weekend saw some excellent fixtures with Winchester, so all in all things look bright ahead of the Lent term.
Hockey
Well done to the girls U18 indoor hockey team, who finished a fantastic 5th at the national indoor finals. The girls U16A secured another impressive Tier 1 league victory and the weekend saw a brilliant final block with Marlborough, with notable performances from the 1st XI, the U14C and U14D. We also want to say well done to the U14B hockey girls, who have only lost once this term.
Netball
Our 1st Team continued their strong cup run last Thursday with an outstanding performance in the third round against St Swithun’s. From the first whistle the pace of the game was very fast, with the girls taking control early. A dominant first quarter saw them finish with a convincing lead, with some exceptional defensive pressure. The opening eight minutes saw eight defensive turnovers, the start of a fantastic display from our defence, who consistently disrupted St Swithun’s flow throughout the match. The intensity of the game never dipped. Every player took to the court and contributed positively, showcasing the depth of our squad. Their hard work was reflected in the final score of 36–17, a well-deserved win and a great marker of the progress this group continues to make. A fantastic team performance and an excellent way to move forward in the cup, well done girls! Coaches’ player of the game was Cara (E), who we also say congratulations to for her selection to the Republic of Ireland U19 netball team.
Rugby
The rugby club closed out an impressive and highly competitive season with some tough fixtures with Brighton College, which saw a share of the spoils between the two schools, but with notable and close wins for the Yearlings B’s, 4th XV and 2nd XV.
Skiing
Emily (Ap) has managed to secure her place in the English team for 2026/27 with her first results of the season last week, well done.
Team of the week
This week’s team of the week is the shooting team, who at the National Schools event Long Range Winter Championships came 1st in all competitions, with 2nd place also in the Junior Pairs, as well as securing top 14 and 15 year old spots too. Well done.
Team of the term
The ever sought-after team of the term award this term goes to the fabulous undefeated boys U16B rugby team, who boast the impressive record of scoring 335 points and only conceding 67 across 9 fixtures.

Badminton
The Wellington Badminton team had a tough fight against Winchester at home on Thursday. Putting in determined performances across all four pairings. They secured several well-earned wins and pushed many games to tight scores, showing real resilience against strong opposition. However, Winchester proved to be the better more consistent team on Thursday with them pulling ahead winning 9 and Wellington winning 7. Despite the result, Wellington can be proud of the effort they have put in. Special mentions to Ben (R) for dominating his singles match 21-9 and Franklin (H) for putting his heart into every shot played.
Hockey
The Hockey club faced Brighton and there were good wins for the girl’s 2nd and 3rd XI, a tight and well-earned win for the under 15C and the under 14As went away and won 4-1.
Netball
In a thrilling home fixture, Wellington 2s/3s faced Gordon’s School in a return match after an early-term defeat. Determined for success, the squad delivered a convincing win through exceptional teamwork and composure. Highlights included playing the ball effectively through court, clinical execution in attack, and improved game awareness with patient ball movement. Special recognition goes to Holly (Ap) for her dominance in the centre court, controlling play with confidence. Maya (A), Liv (C), and Imo (T) were outstanding in the shooting circle, showcasing consistency and precision throughout. A fantastic performance that reflects growth and resilience from the entire team.
Polo
Played Eton won 7-1 and played Harrow lost 3-2
Wellington’s B Team competed in an American tournament against Harrow and Eton, playing two chukkas against each school. They opened against Eton with a commanding 7–1 victory. Lyra (T) confidently converted two long-range efforts from the 25-yard line to secure valuable double-pointers. Frankie (R) drove the attack with pace, striking powerful shots on goal and transitioning the play smoothly up the field. Hugo (M) showed excellent development in his riding and defensive positioning, disrupting Eton’s advances. The following fixture against Harrow, Wellington were narrowly defeated 3-2 despite strong determination. Captain Charlie (M) stepped up superbly in these final two chukkas, scoring a well-taken goal and providing calm leadership. Across both matches, the squad displayed growing confidence and awareness.
Rackets
Played 10, Won 6 Lost 4
Good luck to all the Rackets players involved in the National Schools Championships at The Queens Club, that gets underway this coming weekend.
Real Tennis
P0, W0, L0, Drew,0.
This week saw the National Schools Junior Colts Doubles Championship held at Canford. Wellington entered 3 pairs. Wellington 1 and 2 topped their groups and made it to through the semis to meet each other in the Final. Wellington 2 (Lachie (M) and Carlo (M)) prevailed over Wellington 1 (Stan (Bl) and Jack (Bl)) to win. An excellent performance by all 3 pairs.
This week also saw the National Schools Colts Doubles Championship held at Radley. Wellington (Rory (Pn) and Danny (Pn)) cruised through to the semi finals to meet he number 1 seed Radley. This was the closest match of the whole tournament with Wellington narrowly missing out in the first set by 1 point (5/6) leading to a tense second set that flip flopped between the two. Radley held their nerve to take the second 4/6. This was an outstanding performance from the Wellington pair.
Rugby
P: 11 W 6 L5
Some great fixtures against Tonbridge, with a particular well done to the boys Colts B rugby team, who put in an excellent performance to win away at Tonbridge, a side who were also unbeaten till this weekend. This team now remain unbeaten in two seasons. It is worth noting that U16B teams rarely win away at Tonbridge. 2017 was the last time it’s happened and before that it’s 2009. The team really stepped up and defended with resolve, taking their chances when they came and won 24-5 in the end. There were some other excellent fixtures and results for the rugby club, particularly the Junior Colts A who won a tight game away from home 27-17 and the Junior Colts A, despite losing, put in a great performance in a close 27-21 loss.
Shooting
Played: 3 Won: 0 Lost: 2 Drew: 1
The shooting team suffered a rare defeat to Charterhouse, losing for the 1st time in several Smallbore seasons. Whilst this disappointing it was both a useful reminder and an opportunity to grow and develop skills further. We now await final results from the national match last Saturday.
Squash
Well done to the boys U19 squash team, who finished 3rd this week in the U19 National schools’ tournament at Wellington, credit for all their hard work.
Team of the week
With senior rugby teams away this weekend, it is likely the weekend gone was the last time the seniors would play on Bigside and therefore the last time The Raymonds (3rd XV) would grace Bigside 5, before it becomes Wellington’s 3rd astro. Therefore, it was a fitting sign off, to see The Raymonds put in a fantastic team performance, bouncing back from a loss to Sedbergh and showing wonderful first half defence, to run out 36-5 winners by full time.

Football
The First XI Football team set the tone with a composed 2–0 win over Alleyn’s in the ISFA Cup, thanks to two goals from Anish (E) and excellent build-up play from Joe (R) and Fedor Hl). Their victory secures a well-deserved place in the last 16.
Hockey
Well done to the U16 girls at the Regional indoor tournament, who finished second overall, losing in the final 1-0 on shuffles.
Netball
U15As Won SE Berks Tournament
The U15 squad delivered a brilliant afternoon of netball. They opened the tournament in style with dominant wins of 12–0 and 10–2. The next matches were tighter, but the team stayed composed under pressure, pulling ahead when it mattered and topping their pool. In the semi-final, sharp shooting from Lexi (Ap) and smart decision-making from Alegra (Ap) secured their spot in the final. In the final they had several crucial turnovers, allowing the team to finish with a dominant win and were crowned champions of the tournament. Coaches player went to Lotti (Ap) for her excellent leadership and impressive work rate in defence. However, every player contributed significant minutes and it was a true team performance and a thoroughly deserved tournament win.
Rackets

Rugby
Under the lights at Broadstreet RFC, the 1st XV added to the excitement with a thrilling 20–17 win against Sedbergh in one of school rugby’s most iconic rivalries. With superb performances from the Yearlings and Colts as well, it was a powerful display of depth and spirit across the rugby programme. Even in those games that did not go Wellington’s way, there was superb rugby played throughout and it is testament to the whole club that this is the first year we have also played 3rd and 4th XV fixtures too.
Squash
The U15 boys’ squash team delivered a superb showing in Stage 1 of the National Schools Championships, finishing second overall and earning progression to the next round. The squad demonstrated the strength and promise within Wellington squash.
Team of the week
Colts A Rugby
The Colts A Rugby team came up against their two toughest opponents of the season, Lord Wandsworth College and Sedbergh School, in the space of five days. Delivering two outstanding performances, demonstrating exceptional resilience, development, and collective drive, the squad rose to each challenge with maturity and commitment.
Their 15–13 win over LWC was a resilient and hard-earned result, showcasing their ability to stay composed under pressure. Having fallen behind early, the boys showed real character to fight back and score three tries to one. Building on that momentum, the group worked hard in preparation for their midweek fixture against Sedbergh, securing a hard-fought 31–25 victory. The first half against Sedbergh was arguably their best half of rugby this season, showcasing not only their technical progression but also their ability to execute under pressure.
What has stood out most is the team’s willingness to work for one another, to adapt and to continually raise their standards week on week. Their effort, attitude and togetherness over these two tight matches reflect the values we look for in Wellington teams.

Wellington College runs a Sporting Parent Forum, which aims to work with a group of parents to seek feedback on areas that have recently been developed, are in development or that have been identified as needing review. The group meets three times a year, along with the Director of Sport, Assistant Director of Sport and Deputy Head Co-Curricular. Please find an executive summary from the most recent meeting HERE
Gymnastics
Well done to Amelia C (W) and her team from Bracknell Gymnastics Club, representing Great Britain in Italy. They won the official Mid-European TeamGym Senior Mixed Championship. Not only did they get gold, but they also achieved the highest score on floor, tumble and trampette in the whole competition. An absolutely brilliant result, well done.
Further congratulations also go to Amelia T (W), who has had a fantastic couple of months competing at the Plovdiv Cup in Bulgaria and the European Championships in Azerbaijan as part of the Great Britain team. Amelia came 5th in Bulgaria and her partnership score at the Europeans contributed to the national team standings representing the junior Great Britain aerobic gymnastics team coming 4th, missing out on bronze by just one point!
Football
Last week on the football fields, in the mid week fixtures the club did not lose a game against Harrow and Cranford. Both the 1st XI and U15A sides won their ISFA round 1 cup games.
Hockey
The Hockey club had a great last week, with the girls 1st team gaining a 1-1 draw in their Tier 1 game vs Surbiton High, whilst the U16s won away at the Perse. The seniors also went on to win the indoor regionals this week to qualify for national finals in December, which is a fantastic effort.
Huge congratulations also go to Eva (A) and Sophia (C) who have been selected for the England U16 hockey squad and to Nina (T), Georgia (Hp) and Cecily (O) in the England U18 Squad, well done to all five girls on their national call ups.
Netball
1st VII won 31-29
Wellington faced Hurst in the second round of the cup on Tuesday and came away with a hard-fought 29–31 win. It was an exceptionally close contest from start to finish, with the first three quarters all ending level. Both teams pushed the pace, but Wellington produced their best netball of the season when it mattered most. Our defensive unit was outstanding throughout, consistently restricting Hurst’s options and forcing multiple held-ball turnovers through relentless pressure. In attack, the girls showed real composure and control, maintaining possession, including an impressive final few minutes where they kept the ball for over a minute to close out the game. Every player contributed to an excellent team performance, but Coaches’ Player of the Match was awarded to Cara (E) for her versatility across the court and the constant defensive pressure she applied from start to finish.
Polo
Drew 3/3 vs Eton
Wellington’s B Team followed last weeks match with an impressive three-chukka performance against Eton, showing consistency throughout. The match remained level at every stage -1–1 after the first chukka, 2–2 after the second, and concluding with a well-earned 3–3 draw. Lyra (T) captained the side superbly, setting the pace with quick decision-making and sharp attacking play. Frankie (R) impressed with several powerful long shots that pushed Eton’s defence, while Hugo (M) delivered a strong defensive display, breaking up Eton’s advances and keeping the team balanced.
Rugby
Rugby club played Lord Wandsworth college: P8 W5 L3
Saturday saw some excellent rugby both home and away vs Lord Wandsworth, with really notable and tight games for the Colts A team, winning 15-13 and the Yearlings A team, winning 17-0.
Swimming
Wellington College’s swimming U18 team, competing against Marlborough College, Bromsgove and Kingswood won the U18 Girls’ freestyle, the U18 Girls’ Butterfly, the U18 Girls’ Break stroke as well as the U18 Girls’ Individual Medley. Amy (O) won the U18 Girls’ freestyle, Sienna (W) won the U18 Girls’ Butterfly and the U18 Girls’ Individual Medley, while Martha (O) won the U18 Girls’ breast stroke.
Squash
Well done to the senior girls who competed in the national squash event hosted at Wellington, finishing 2nd overall in the event of 5 schools.
Tennis
The U15 Boys tennis reached the final 16 of the national schools tournament. The fixture on Thursday was the regional division 1 playoff with 4 schools competing to go to the national playoff. The U15 boys were one of the remaining teams in the competition which started with 486 school. An incredible achievement and the first time that a boys tennis team has achieved this.
Teams of the week
Finally, we celebrate two teams of the week this week: the U14D hockey girls, who had a great game last Saturday securing a 3-1 win vs Canford and to 1st VII netball team, who faced Hurst in the second round of the cup and came away with a hard-fought 29–31 win, well done to both teams.

Badminton
The week gone saw some excellent victories for the mixed U17 and Badminton 2nd team against Bradfield.
Football
Saturday saw some good fixtures with Lord Wandsworth, with some high score lines going both ways.
Netball
Played 4, W 1, D 1, L 2
On Saturday 8th November, the U14As, U16As and 1st Team travelled to Theale Green School to take part in the Berkshire Schools County Netball Tournament. The aim of the day for each team was to finish 1st or 2nd to secure a place at next year’s Regional Finals.
The 1sts played a round-robin format, which left little margin for error across the day. With eight matches to play, all members of the squad made impressive contributions, showing excellent unit and individual play. The day provided challenges, particularly in matches against The Marist and St Mary’s Ascot, with the 1sts fighting back from half-time deficits. The defensive efforts of the group were outstanding, with only 36 goals scored against Wellington across 112 minutes of netball. The team ended unbeaten and retained their County Champions title.
The U16As and U14As played a group and knock-out format, with wider gaps between their games; this required the teams to show focus and the ability to quickly implement tactical strategies. The U16s had some challenging games, edging a 1-goal win against St George’s Ascot in the final 30 seconds. Despite a draw against a skilful Queen Anne’s team, the group finished top of their table thanks to goal difference. Qualification for Regionals required a semi-final win, and a comprehensive second-half performance saw them victorious over The Abbey. The team peaked at just the right time, going one better than their earlier draw to win the final and the County Championship.
The U14As had their first taste of National Schools Netball for Wellington, with the players demonstrating excellent individual and team skills. They had the toughest draw of the day, including a seven-game gap between two rounds. Despite having only trained together as a group for two months, the players won four of their five group games and were victorious in their quarter-final. Unfortunately, they fell just short in their semi-final, losing by three goals to the eventual champions, Clare’s Court.
Congratulations to the Netballers who have been selected into their representative Regional performance squads. The athletes include:
-
Keira (C), Freya (T) and Cara (E) selected for Pulse Power U19s.
-
Annabel (T) selected for Pulse Power U17s.
Lost 20–25
On Thursday, a combined squad made up of our 2nds and 3rds took on Gordon’s School in what turned out to be a thrilling and closely contested match. After a slow start, the girls found their rhythm and pulled ahead with some excellent passages of play. The score remained neck and neck right up until the final five minutes, keeping everyone on edge. The team showed great determination, composure, and teamwork throughout.
Defensive Player of the Match went to Lola (C) for her consistency and relentless pressure, while Maya (A) was named Attacking Player of the Match for her creativity and finishing under pressure.
Well done to everyone who played – it was a fantastic performance and a great game of netball!
The U14Bs faced a strong Bohunt A side. Despite the loss, the girls showed improvement each quarter, scoring more goals in each. Bohunt’s attack proved difficult to contain, but the defence worked tirelessly to apply pressure and made numerous turnovers. Phillipa (W) stood out with her impressive work rate and interceptions in defence, and in attack Daisy (Hn) was on fire, putting in an impressive shooting performance.
U14C
Wellington started strong from the very beginning, taking an early lead with some lovely through-court play and excellent defensive work throughout. This momentum continued into the second quarter, even as team changes were made. In the second half, our opposition, Bohunt, made some tactical adjustments that disrupted Wellington’s rhythm. Despite Wellington’s continued effort and determination, Bohunt gradually worked their way back into the game. By the final whistle, the match ended in a well-fought draw. Martha (C) took Coaches’ Player, with defensive Opposition Player of the Match going to Anne (C), and Cecilia (A) taking the award for Attacking Player.
Polo
Played Harrow, lost 5–6.
Wellington’s B Team put on a spirited performance against Harrow in a fast-paced three-chukka match. After a challenging start that saw Harrow lead 5-1 at the end of the first chukka, Wellington rallied with determination and teamwork, tightening their defence and finding fluency in attack. Their comeback effort was outstanding, closing the gap to a single goal as the match finished 6-5 to Harrow – a result that reflected Wellington’s resilience and growing cohesion.
Rackets
Played 4, Won 1, Lost 3.
Rugby
Vs Clifton College: W 8, L 2, with U16C losing against Hurst.
Shooting
For our team of fours, our B Team out-shot the A Team by 5 points in the English Schools Long Range Competition (50 yards outdoor .22 shooting). Final results are still pending.
Top score for Wellington came from Ricky (M) with an impressive 195.9 out of 200.20.
Seventeen students of the Wellington College Target Rifle Club shot at Worplesdon Target Rifle Range on Saturday to compete in the English Schools Long Range event. The competition is currently running as a postal event due to the lack of a large enough electronic range, but it still attracts over 100 individuals from English schools that do .22 rifle shooting. Our B Team out-shot our A Team, scoring an excellent 771.26 out of 800.80. Well done to Lucas (M), Jessie (A), Matteo (L) and Siena (C) for their excellent shooting – only 5 points shy, as a team, of an average score of 97/100 per card!
Teams of the Week
U16A Netball
Well done to the U16 girls, who battled brilliantly all day to come out as County winners.
Yearlings A
Rousing themselves after one of the longer transits in WCRFC’s calendar and aware of their tendency for slow starts away, the U14A team tussled well against a combative Clifton side to earn their 17-10 halftime lead. Resolving to raise accuracy and physicality, they found another gear to pin Clifton in their half for much of the second stanza, dominating throughout for a final result of 57-17.
Many excellent individual performances – Freddie (M) with direct running and incisive line-breaks; Jack (Bd) and Kit (Bn) commanding the halves; Olly (Pn) wreaking havoc at breakdowns in a strong captain’s shift. Not to diminish others’ contributions, this was ultimately an outstanding collective showing of grit, courage and cohesion.

Football
The Wellington College Football Tour to Munich was an outstanding success, providing pupils with a memorable and challenging experience both on and off the pitch. Over the course of five days in Germany, the squad gained a genuine insight into the standards, professionalism, and intensity expected within a top European academy environment.
During the tour, the group participated in four high-quality training sessions led by Bayern Munich academy coaches. Each session focused on developing tactical understanding, technical precision, and mental resilience. The players responded superbly, demonstrating focus, discipline, and an eagerness to learn.
The team also competed in two fiercely contested fixtures against strong local opposition (one being Bayern’s Global Academy). Both matches tested the players’ physicality, decision-making, and adaptability under pressure, offering a valuable benchmark against international competition.
Away from training and matches, the group experienced the very best of Bavarian culture. They enjoyed a guided tour of Munich, exploring the city’s rich history and architecture, followed by a tour of the Allianz Arena, home to FC Bayern Munich. A particular highlight was attending the Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund match, where pupils witnessed first-hand the atmosphere and intensity of top-level football.
Throughout the week, the boys conducted themselves with great maturity and pride, representing Wellington with distinction. Their commitment, teamwork, and enthusiasm were evident at every stage of the tour.
Hockey
The U16 and U18 Hockey girls won their respective indoor county tournaments.
Before the break, Interhouse hockey was played out seeing the Wellesley win the Juniors, Anglesey the Inters and Combermere the seniors.
Netball
Played 1. Lost 1.
In the final week before Half Term the U15As played their second round of the Sister’s in Sport Cup against Caterham. The match was tightly contested throughout, with the lead swinging between teams and neither Wellington or Caterham gaining a sizeable advantage. On the final whistle the match was drawn, which meant the game went to Golden Goal. Unfortunately, Wellington were unable to convert and Caterham took a 1-goal victory.
During the October half term, the 1st, 2nd and U16 netball squads embarked on an unforgettable ten-day tour to South Africa – a trip that combined high-level netball, cultural exploration, and team bonding in spectacular surroundings.
The tour began in Stellenbosch, where the teams settled quickly into training at Stellenbosch University and faced their first fixtures against local opposition, including Hoërskool Bellville and Strand High School. These opening matches set the tone for the week, showcasing impressive determination, teamwork, and adaptability against strong South African sides. Between matches, the group explored Stellenbosch’s historic town centre and enjoyed a well-earned visit to Cool Runnings Toboggan Park – a definite highlight!
From there, the group travelled to Cape Town for the second phase of the tour. Highlights included a hike up Table Mountain followed by a cable-car descent, a ferry trip to Robben Island, sightseeing at Cape Point, and visiting the famous Boulders Beach penguin colony. The girls also experienced Seal Island by boat and enjoyed downtime at Camps Bay Beach and the V&A Waterfront.
On court, the teams continued to impress with fixtures against Paarl Girls’ High, DF Malan and Stellenberg High School, ending the tour with five competitive matches and three strong wins, a fantastic reflection of their progress and the collective spirit across all squads.
Throughout the trip, the players represented Wellington College superbly. Their enthusiasm, commitment, and mutual support both on and off the court were exemplary. Beyond the results, this was a chance for the girls to experience new cultures, build lasting friendships, and return with memories that will stay with them for years to come.
A huge thank you to all staff, players, and our travel partners for making the 2025 South Africa Tour such a resounding success.
Well done to all our students that came on tour the below players got ‘player on tour’
U18 1st team – Sophie (E)
U18 2nd team – Maya (A)
U16 – Lily (C)
Captain on tour, Cara’s (E) tour experience and reflections:
During half term, the 1sts, 2nds, and U16s embarked on an unforgettable tour to South Africa, filled with netball, adventure, and team bonding. We began our journey in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, where we spent the first three days training hard, settling in, and playing our opening fixtures against strong local opposition. After a great start, we travelled to Cape Town for the second part of the trip, where the excitement continued both on and off the court. Across the tour, we played a total of five matches, each team made incredible progress, showed great determination, and teamwork against a very different style of netball. Off the court, we experienced some amazing activities, including climbing the iconic Table Mountain, going tobogganing, and visiting Penguin Island. The trip was not only a fantastic sporting experience but also a chance to grow closer as teams, build lasting friendships, and create memories that will last us a lifetime.
Rackets
Played 6 won 3 lost 3
The Rackets Team had an epic day at Harrow, including a very tight 3-2 win for the senior pair of Olli (L) and Raf (L). Special mention to the Junior Colts Pair of Carlo (M) and Daniyal (Pn), who remained unbeaten through the first half of term.
Rugby
The Yearlings and Junior Colts rugby teams competed well at their respective festivals (Bedford and Langley) coming 4th and 7th between them.
Interhouse rugby was contested before half term seeing the following winners:
3rd form – Picton
4th/5th form – Beresford
6th form – Hill
Wellington College 1st XV – St Joseph’s National Festival Champions
Over the first weekend of half term, the Wellington College 1st XV travelled to the prestigious St Joseph’s National Schools Rugby Festival, a highlight of the school rugby calendar. What unfolded across the two days was a story of resilience, determination, and outstanding teamwork, culminating in Wellington lifting the Trophy after a dramatic final against Millfield.
The journey did not begin smoothly. The team bus broke down on Friday afternoon, causing a long delay and the cancellation of our restaurant booking. Instead, the squad had to make do with a well-known fast-food chain before finally arriving at the hotel at around 10.30pm. Lesser groups might have let this affect their focus, but this one didn’t.
From the first whistle on Saturday morning, the boys showed tremendous spirit, coming from behind in all three group matches against Whitchurch, Seaford, and Denstone to win the group and qualify for the Trophy competition on Sunday. Their resilience and unity were clear for all to see. A well-earned meal at Zizzi’s in Colchester followed, and the excitement for the next day was palpable.
Sunday brought knockout rugby and even greater tests of character. In the quarter-final, Wellington edged past Cheltenham 12–10 in another fiercely contested encounter. Next came the semi-final against the hosts, St Joseph’s College, with the full school lined up to form a tunnel and pyrotechnics blazing. After some confusion about whether we were on the pitch or not as St Joseph’s ran out, Wellington responded in the perfect way, producing some of their best and most determined rugby of the season to win 14–5 and book a place in the final.
The final saw Wellington face Millfield, a team who had beaten us earlier in the season. Determined to put things right, the squad approached the match with composure and belief. Millfield struck first to lead 7–0, but Wellington rallied magnificently, levelling the score at 7–7 with less than two minutes to play. Then came the moment of magic: a penalty, 41 metres out, slightly right of the posts. Up stepped Sam (Bd), who struck one of the sweetest kicks he will ever hit to give Wellington a 10–7 lead. Moments later, as Millfield knocked on and the ball was cleared to touch, the final whistle blew and the celebrations began.
It was a weekend that captured the very essence of school rugby: drama, teamwork, adversity, and joy. From broken-down buses to last-minute heroics, the players showed immense maturity, connection, and pride in representing Wellington College.
The entire squad should be enormously proud of what they achieved, not just as champions, but as outstanding ambassadors for their school and for the game.
Running
There was some great competition at the Welly5k, with Edward (Bn) winning the boys race, in a time of 16.02 and Tilly )Ap) the girls race, in 18.40 – two fantastic performances. The house events were won as follows:
Senior Boys – Picton
Inter Boys – Picton
Junior Boys – Blucher
Senior Girls – Combermere
Inter Girls – Combermere
Junior Girls – Apsley
Well done also to Edward (Bn) who was part of the U15B gold medal winning relay team in the English Cross Country champs, representing Bracknell AC.
Team of the week
For the second time this term, the Boys Rugby 1st XV are team of the week, having gone undefeated at the St Jo’s National Festival and winning the final with the last kick of the game, the whole group showing true resilience and determination across the weekend.

The second pair faced a challenging match and, despite their best efforts, fell in straight sets (12-21, 12-21), but continued to fight for every point and kept the energy high for the team.

The 1st XI battled to a well-earned 2–2 draw away from home, showing resilience and quality throughout. The 2nd XI secured a 2–1 victory in a strong performance, while the U16A held Tonbridge to a 1–1 draw in a closely contested match. Our U15 and U18 teams also produced committed displays, representing the College with energy and determination in their respective fixtures.
Hockey
P11 – won 2 – drew 2 – lost 7.
Well done to the girls’ 1st XI, who got off to a winning start in the England Hockey Tier 1 league with a 4-0 win against Sir William Borlase on Wednesday afternoon.
Netball
Played 5, Won 3, Lost 2.
This week saw a number of fixtures for our Netball teams, with the 2nds and 3rds playing St Catherine’s in friendly match-ups early in the week. Despite a slow start, both teams worked hard and remained competitive. On Wednesday, the U14As, U16As and 1st team attended the Queen Anne’s Pre-County Tournament. Despite tough competition from many strong Netball schools, all teams went unbeaten across the afternoon, with Wellington winning all three age groups for the first time. This was a particularly impressive achievement for the U14s, given they have only trained together for four weeks!
Rackets
P4 W1 L3.
Rugby
Played 10 W4 L6 vs Millfield.
A great block as always against one of the best rugby schools in the country. Well done to the 3rd XV for winning away from home and the U16A team with a big win at home on BS1.
Running
Congratulations to Edward (Bn), who was part of the winning U15B relay team (3 x 3.9km) in the English Road Relays in Birmingham last weekend.
Teams of the Week
The boys’ Junior Tennis team, who won the Berkshire round last summer, have now beaten King’s Winchester and have qualified for the Regional Finals in November. This is a first for Wellington boys and puts them in the top four in the South East, and the last 16 in the UK. Well done to Toby (Bl), Max (Hl), Will (Bd), Lachie (M) & Carlo (M), who all contributed in last week’s narrow win.
The second Team of the Week is the U14B girls’ Hockey team, who, in some tough fixtures against Epsom, came out winners 2-1, having played well all term and worked very well together as a team. Helen (W) and Milly (O) scored two excellent goals this weekend, and there was a stand-out performance in defence from Imogen (Ap).

The U15 Girls Rackets pair of Tabs (T) and Frankie (A) did very well to save 4 match points and win 3-2 against a very strong Marlborough pair. These two have also beaten Cheltenham this year and will be strong contenders when the National Championships at Queens come round later this term.
Rugby
Fixtures against Dulwich College saw 10 wins and 3 losses. With the U15As losing a great game in the last play of the game, but we say well done, because as Yearlings they lost by 40 points, a fantastic sign of development. Wonderful also to see the three Yearlings sides recording three wins.
Last week also saw the U15As progress in the National Cup first round, with a 28-10.
Shooting
Well done to the Rifle Shooting team at the Mothballer Gloucestershire County event last Sunday.
Chung Hang (L) won the U19 and U25 trophy, beating Vasily (R) by two V bulls. The U25 trophy was hotly contested amongst the Wellington pupils and a few other U25s, highlighting our strength in the Fullbore landscape.
Special mention to Valentina (Hn) for her 50.8 at 600 yards, earning her 5th place in the distance, and Chung Hang (L) for his 50.7 at 300 yards, earning him 6th place.

On Saturday the 1sts Netball Team competed in the Gordon’s Pre-Season Tournament. The group went unbeaten in their Group, reaching the Semi-Final against Brighton. Hockey tour
In early August, a Lower Sixth hockey squad embarked on an unforgettable tour of Argentina, and what a trip it was! From the moment we arrived, the girls threw themselves headfirst into Argentinian culture, embracing everything that came their way.
The hockey was tough and early season fitness levels were tested with five games played in only ten days which will have prepared the girls extremely well for the season ahead.
Away from the hockey, the squad enjoyed immersing themselves in the sights and sounds of Argentina. A particular highlight was the visit to the breathtaking Iguazu Falls. A simply stunning natural wonder that left everyone in awe as well as completely soaked! Whether exploring the cities, sampling traditional food, or bonding as a team, every moment added to what was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Rugby
From Scrums to Safaris: W.C.R.F.C South Africa 2025
66 Wellingtonians and nine staff set off on the 27th July for what proved to be a truly memorable rugby tour to South Africa.
The first half of the tour was spent at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, where the boys had access to world-class training facilities. This provided the perfect setting to train, eat, bond and prepare for the tough fixtures ahead, offering a glimpse into the standards of a professional training environment.
Our opening fixture was against Paul Roos Gymnasium, one of the great powerhouses of South African schools’ rugby. The 1st XV found themselves in a cagey and highly physical contest, eventually losing 22–12 to a well-drilled and relentless Paul Roos side. The 2nd XV fared better in an open, attacking match, playing with great flair to secure a thrilling 50–33 victory. The U15s faced a stern baptism in their first real taste of South African schoolboy rugby. They matched their opponents for much of the game, showing real grit and determination, before going down 17–7 in a brave performance that demanded tested the opposition throughout.
On the morning of the second fixture was the visit to Table Mountain, where a cable car ride to the summit offered stunning views over Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean, for at least a few minutes before the clouds rolled in. That afternoon Wellington College rugby club travelled to play Wynberg Boys’ High School. Here we encountered a very different style of rugby, with Wynberg combining their trademark physicality with a far more expansive, attacking approach. The 1st XV rose superbly to the challenge, producing some of their finest rugby of the tour to win 41–31 in a pulsating contest. The 2nd XV faced a determined Wynberg side in heavy underfoot condition; the game ebbed and flowed back and forth, ‘The dark knights’ battled hard but went down 22-17. The Under 15s faced one of the best U15 sides in South Africa, playing heroically at times, but Wynberg were too strong on the day coming away 26-0 winners.
Away from the rugby, the boys enjoyed a programme of cultural and educational experiences that made the tour truly unforgettable. In Stellenbosch, we visited the cheetah sanctuary where the boys were able to see these magnificent animals up close, learning more about conservation efforts in South Africa. A highlight of our time in the Western Cape was the visit to Table Mountain, where a cable car ride to the summit offered stunning views over Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean.
Another memorable day was spent on the Cape Peninsula. We took a boat out to Seal Island, where the boys watched hundreds of Cape fur seals in their natural habitat, before travelling on to Cape Point with its dramatic cliffs and sweeping views of the ocean. The day concluded at Boulders Beach, home to South Africa’s famous colony of African penguins. Watching the penguins at close quarters, waddling along the sand and swimming in the surf, left everyone smiling.
We were also fortunate to attend the famous Paarl Derby, one of the great occasions in South African school sport. Watching two of the country’s top rugby schools go head to head across multiple age groups gave our boys a real appreciation of the passion and scale of school rugby in South Africa.
The tour then moved north, where we stayed at Bakubung Lodge on the edge of the Pilanesberg National Park. Here we enjoyed two unforgettable game drives, seeing giraffes, elephants, rhinos, crocodiles, hippos, and even a pride of lions with cubs in their natural environment. It was a magical experience that will live long in the memory.
On the final day, before making our way to the airport, we stopped in Pretoria to visit the Union Buildings. This provided a moment of reflection on South Africa’s political and cultural history and was a fitting way to close a tour that had offered so much more than rugby alone.
The boys represented the College with pride both on and off the field, earning praise not only for their performances but also for the way they conducted themselves throughout.
Sailing
This summers Schools Sailing Event at Itchenor was the strongest school fleet ever with 84 entries, 30 boats national level sailors with international representation from the US and HK. Consequently the Race officer was moved to sail a series of 8+ races, and large, testing courses fitting to the calibre of the fleet.
Against this backdrop, for our team, several firsts.
First time sailing on the sea
First ever formal race
First time sailing against more than six boats in a fleet
First time on the water for longer than 2 hours without a break
Conditions on Thursday were on the edge of sailable for even experience sailors, and two of our boats started and completed every race. Tom (Bl) and his crew Daniel (R) score two good results, just scraping into the top half of the fleet, which frankly should be celebrated. The OW representative and Itchenor club member, Guy Russell, helped from the shore and has nominated Rupert (Bl) for their silver Shilling Tankard award in recognition of the manner in which he conducted himself both on the shore and on the course.
Shooting
After a successful year, the team’s largest success was that from Schools week (13th July to 17th July). This year marked the final year of the Schools Meeting with the Ministry of Defence issued Cadet Target Rifle, and the MoD’s involvement with Fullbore Target Rifle shooting ending. Having come 2nd last year in the Ashburton and having lost no one in the cohort from last year, the team were eager to make history. The team progressively improved over the week, slowly building to the Ashburton day itself; team selection, as a result, was very difficult. Looking at the results:
Wellington College’s VIII won the Ashburton Shield for the fifth time since 2012, winning it for the final time under the current MoD CTR use.
Ricky (M) won the Fox Quaich for being the highest scorer on Ashburton Day (99.6)
The team came 4th in the Schools Pair, with 5 points being the difference between 1st and 4th place – an excellent outcome from two junior shooters.
Wellington came 2nd in both the Cadet Pair Closed and Cadet Pair Open, both teams missing out on 1st place by 6 points each.
When combined together, the Cadet pair teams made the Cadet Four, finishing in 1st place.
The Schools Four finished in 2nd place, missing 1st place by a point.
Nine students finished in the Cadet 100.
In total, Wellington won 12 trophies as a result of how well the team shot on the day of Ashburton.
Finally, the Imperial meeting saw some excellent shooting from all involved – we had two students make it through to the King’s Prize 2nd stage, and one make it through the George’s 2nd stage as well. Conditions were tricky, and sadly this year none of them made it through to the final stages. Valentina (Hn) was the top Wellington shooter in the Grand Agg.

Third Form sports tours
Boys’ tennis tour
The U14 boys had a fantastic tennis tour, showing impressive skill, attitude and resilience throughout. Day one saw a strong 6-3 win over Clifton in a competitive and well-contested fixture. On day two, the boys experienced a high-quality training day with performance coaches at Bath, hitting a huge number of balls and gaining real value from the sessions. They then travelled to Prior Park to face a strong U15 side, narrowly losing 5-4 in a thriller where every final match pairing went to a tie break, a real display of mental toughness in hot conditions. The tour finished with a brilliant day out at the Nottingham Open, where the boys soaked up top-level tennis and represented the school superbly. Their attitude and energy all week was outstanding, a hugely enjoyable and productive tour for all involved.
Girls’ tennis tour
Ten girls took part on the U14 girls’ tennis tour. On the tour they played two highly competitive fixtures and took part in a high performance training session at Loughborough University.
The girls competed well in their fixtures at Cheltenham and Oakham and demonstrated a positive and fighting mindset competing against Year 10 girls at Cheltenham and a mixed team including Year 10 boys at Oakham. The girls showed improvement from their first match at Cheltenham to their second at Oakham and this could be attributed to a high intensity ‘warm-up’ session at Loughborough on the morning of the Oakham fixture. The tour finished with a dazzling display of tennis in the heat at the Nottingham Open. A pro, grass court lead-up event to Wimbledon. All in all, it was a success and happy tennis tour where the girls learnt alit about tennis and themselves!
Boys’ cricket tour
U14s started with a low scoring epic contest at Oakham, managing to defend 81 with Adyant (R) taking four wickets and Vilas (R) with a match winning knock. On Tuesday, we travelled to Manchester, where MGS batted first and posted 138. Benedict (R) bowled superbly and helped restrict them to 138. Wellington struggled on a tough wicket and came up short, finishing on 80 all out. On Wednesday, we played Shrewsbury in scorching conditions and batting first, they amassed 297 with some impressive power hitting. Wellington in reply were all out for 197, Jake (Bn), Wilf (Bn) and Henry (Bd) all with notable contributions.
Girls’ cricket tour
The girls had a wonderful experience playing three games, two T20s and one 30-over fixture, winning 2 out of 3. The first game saw them against Oakham in a nailbiting, high scoring thriller! Wellington were put into bat and hit a mighty 172 in their 20 overs, with Chloe (O) retiring in 50*. The pressure was on whilst Oakham were keeping up with the run rate and one of their girls scored a respectable 72, before being bowled by Frankie (A), which set Wellington up for an 8 run win. The girls then travelled to Rugby to play a strong, well oiled Rugby team in the blazing heat! Wellington won the toss and decided to field, wickets were shared between the team and runs were scored by Frankie (A) and Tabs (T). The girls worked hard in the heat to chase down 152, however, came up slightly short. Day 3 saw the girls play their first ever 30-over game against Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury chose to field and Wellington decided to have a slight change to the order. Runs were scored by Chloe (O), Frankie (A) and Isla (Hn). The girls posted a respectable 200 and were victorious by over 100 runs!
Triathlon
Well done to all the triathletes this season on battling with open water swims, windy bikes, and jelly-legged runs! Particular well done to Edward (Bn) and Jesse (Bn) on their first major triathlon where they were first and second in their age at Nottingham. Huge congratulations also to Sienna (W) who was 8th in the U20s at GB age group trials at Eton and to Caitlin (Ap) who was 6th in the U20 GB age group trials at Blenheim Palace.
Teams of the Week
Last week’s Team of the Week went to two sets of senior tennis players. Firstly, Jess (Ap) and Anna (E) for winning the St George’s Cup on a hot day on the grass courts at MCS Oxford. They played six sets of tennis, against six different schools and won them all, including the final in a tie break, to bring the trophy to Wellington for the first time. Secondly, the 1st Mixed tennis team that won the Welly Invitational Mixed Tournament, ahead of Sevenoaks, Epsom, Cranleigh and Haileybury. This being the second time in six years that the trophy will stay at Wellington.
Team of the Term
The closing award of the term, for the Team of the Term, goes to the boys’ cricket 1st XI who have defied the odds all season with their team efforts. The team is going into the BOWS Festival next week having reached the National T20 quarter-finals, for the first time in 10 years, and then recorded a fantastic win against Eton, with Sam (R) taking 3 wickets and the team chasing 179, with Rhu (E) making 54 and Luka (L) 37 not out. This meant the team sealed victory and the Cowdrey Cup title for 2025, the second time in the last three years, but only the third time in the tournament’s 20-year history. Well done to all the boys involved.
Absence – should a pupil need to miss a sporting commitment, this must be requested with 3 weeks’ notice to the Assistant Head Pupils (Charlie Sutton cms@wellingtoncollege.org.uk). If the absence occurs on a Saturday for an unauthorised reason and a pupil misses training, this will be an automatic Keep In and if a pupil misses a fixture, this will be an automatic Detention.
Sports Code of Conduct
The below is intended to outline commonly accepted behaviours for all those involved with sport at Wellington from pupils, staff, parents and spectators.
- All behaviours should be underpinned by the College values of Respect, Integrity, Kindness, Responsibility and Courage.
- Encourage full effort and competitive but fair play and support and respect for everyone involved.
- Encourage participation in sport for all it offers, such as enjoyment, engagement, development and positive outcomes.
- Maintain appropriate communication with all parties, including use of SOCS, face to face conversations and email where required. On this note, we ask that staff decisions on selection are supported and we ask that staff provide clear feedback to pupils should they not make a team they are aiming for.
Any issues concerning sport at Wellington College, please email the Sport Department at sport@wellingtoncollege.org.uk, rather than individual coaches, unless it is on a purely administrative level.
Summer Term 2025 Week 8
Athletics
On Saturday 14th June, 11 Wellingtonians represented the Bracknell Schools District at the Berkshire County round of the English Schools Track and Field Championships 2025. Of these 11 students, 5 competed in the junior category – Charlie (L), Edward (R), Mode (S), Lotti (Ap) and Michelle (W); in the intermediate category – Tom (Bd) and Eva (W); in the seniors – Arthur (Pn), William (S), Ella (W), Brady (Bd) and Melissa (A). Arthur (Pn) was victorious in the senior 800m, Melissa (A) was also victorious in the senior 200m race and William (S) won the senior boys’ long jump. Congratulations to all that took part and we await to hear if any Wellingtonians have qualified for the National competition during the summer holidays.
Cricket
The 1st XI girls lost out in the final top 8 of the 100 ball cup to Ipswich. A great team effort, but defeated by the better team.
The boys’ 1st XI had a pretty unique week, which saw them chase 190 in the National T20 regional final, with Freddie (Hl) making 87 (57) and Rhu (E) 93 (53) and then on Saturday they defended 247 against Tonbridge with Sam (Bd) taking 5-36.
The Yearlings A team were victorious over Tonbridge with Henry (Bd) making a superb hundred, well done. In the Yearlings B, Tonbridge posted 186 in 25 overs with some tight bowling from Ollie (Bd) and Jesse (Bn). In reply, Wellington reached 125 led by Nick (S) with some superb shots in a score of 60.
It was a tough day in the office for Development XI boys. Winning the toss, they decided to have a bat and after some powerful hitting from Tom (Bd), they finished 60 all out. Despite a blistering opening spell from returning Sam (Hl), Tonbridge were comfortable winners, winning by 9 wickets.
Tennis
Last week the 1st and 2nd Mixed Pairs entered the Bradfield Invitational Mixed Tournament. With a compass draw format, both pairings (Anna (E) & Will (Bd) and Toby (Bl) & Alayna (T)) did really well, winning three out of their four matches.

Teams of the Week
The U15 Mixed teams, all A-D, represented the College at the end of their exam week with real enthusiasm and played well across the board, demonstrating how much they’ve improved over this short term. The A team won 5-4, coming back from 2-1 down, as did the D team. The Bs and Cs showed the strength in depth, were too good for the Cranleigh teams, and both won 8-1.
Summer Term 2025 Week 7
A week of sport largely curtailed by bad weather.

Team of the Week
The U15 golf team, who, at the U15 Strokeplay event at the East Berkshire Golf Club, played well under pressure to finish 3rd at the event and 2nd in the country for the year, a fantastic effort.

Speech Day eve saw the College lose to the OWCC but Charlie (Hl) made 23 off 15, Leo (Bl) 20 off 11 and Ryan (Bd) 22 off 20. Team of the Week
Well done to the Girls U15A cricket team, who won their Cup game against Bradfield. Well done to Edie (Hn) who made 50 not out and Sophia (C) 23. With the ball, wickets were shared, but Ivy (A) and Ophelia (T) were very economical at the start.
Summer Term 2025 Week 5
Athletics
It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Athletics Club. The first major event of the season was Round 1 of the English Schools Track and Field Championships. Wellingtonians in the 3rd, 4th and 5th forms travelled to the John Nike track in Bracknell to compete. Congratulations go to Daniel (R), Edward (R) and Daniel (R), Michelle (W) and Eva (W), Jake (Bn) and Edward (Bn), Tom (Bd) and William (Bd), Mofe (S), Lotti (Ap), Charlie (L) and Josh (M) for all qualifying to represent the Bracknell Schools district at the Berkshire County Round.
The following day the 3rd and 4th form boys were back at the John Nike track to compete in the first round of the English Schools Track and Field Cup. While they didn’t manage to qualify for the next round, there was a notable performance from Wilber (Pn) in the 200m, as well as a commendable effort from the relay team. Well done to all those who took part.
The athletics packed week continued the next day with the annual Inter House Athletics Competition on Friday evening. The whole of Wellington descended on Rockies for a combination of track, field and relay events. It was a competitive evening, combined with a fun atmosphere. Congratulations to the Talbot for winning the Junior Girls competition, the Lynedoch for winning the Junior Boys, the Combermere for winning the Senior Girls and the Hill for winning the Senior Boys.
The competitions continued the following week with the 3rd and 4th form girls this time competing in their first round of the English Schools Track and Field Cup. Like the boys’ team, the girls failed to qualify for the next round, nonetheless there were some notable performances, Martha (C) in the hurdles and the relay team won their heat. Congratulations to all those who took part.
This busy period of athletics was rounded off by us welcoming former British decathlete Dean Macey to the College. Dean was in for an entire day delivering masterclass sessions to our students across multiple events. It was a truly fantastic day and we will be welcoming him back next year to coach again.
Cricket
Block vs Bradfield College: Played 13, Won 7, Lost 6
This week saw a full fixture card across the College against Bradfield, with some exceptional individual and team performances, and a number of close, hard-fought matches. Among the highlights was the Girls 1st XI, who followed up their 100 Ball Cup victory with a composed win over last year’s runners-up, Bradfield — thanks in no small part to a match-defining 40 from Georgia (T) and a standout fielding effort. Rachel (A) earned Player of the Match honours in the MCC game for her all-round contribution. The 2nd XI also shone, with Serena (W) falling just short of a deserved 50*, and Mia (O) and Mimi (O) impressing with the ball in a gritty win defined by courageous leadership from captain Sophie (W). Strong performances continued in the junior sides, with the U15A dispatching Haileybury comfortably, the U14A winning by 7 runs in a tight encounter thanks to sharp tactics from Olive (Ap), and the U14B suffering a loss in a spirited match.
On the boys’ side, the 1st XI bounced back strongly from a midweek defeat to edge Bradfield in a thriller, with Sam (R) scoring 95 and Sam (Bd) taking two crucial wickets at the death. There were losses for the 2nd and 3rd XIs, with Charlie (Hl) standing out for the 2s, scoring 39 and taking 3 wickets. The U14 boys’ teams had an outstanding week — wins for the A, B, and C teams highlighted by Qadar’s (R) 66 and Oliver’s (Bn) four wickets, the latter sealing victory in dramatic (if anticlimactic) fashion via no-ball extras. The U14B chased down their target with all-round contributions, while the U14A’s disciplined bowling and fielding effort ensured a 24-run win.
Golf
Well done to the U15 team golfers, Roland (L), Seb (M), Emma (W), River (Bd), Emily-May (W), Ed (Bd) and Loic (R) who at a national event this week finished 2nd behind a strong Loretto side.
Congratulations also go to Ellie (W) who competed in the Justin Rose Ladies Series last week and finished in a very credible 11th position, five shots behind the champion, and well ahead of many former winners on the Ladies Tour.
Hockey
Last Friday saw the first ever Girls 1st XI vs OW women hockey fixture. It proved to be a brilliant exhibition of hockey, with scores level at the end and the eventual win going to the College on penalties, but the real highlight of the evening was the camaraderie between the 1st XI and OW women.
Rugby
A massive congratulations to Oscar (Pn) who this week signed his first ever professional contract with Bath Rugby and we wish him the best of luck with his future career now.
Tennis
Played 6 tournaments: 2 x 2nd place, 4 x 3rd place.
Fixtures: Played 14, Won 4, Drew 1, Lost 9
The U15 Boys won the County Championship as part of the Aegon National Schools competition. They now progress through to the regional knock-out rounds. Well done boys! Last weekend also saw the Girls U15B, C and D all record excellent wins against Wycombe Abbey.
Congratulations to Toby (Bl) who, after three days of tennis in Nottingham, was part of the Surrey team who are now National Champions for the third consecutive year.
Triathlon
Edward (Bn) and Jesse (Bn), competing in their first sprint distance triathlon in Nottingham, showed immense courage and resilience as they took on a crowded 750m lake swim, followed by a very windy 20km bike ride and then a 5km run with legs full of lactic acid! They did incredibly well, coming 1st and 2nd out of the U15s and an amazing 13th and 19th in the U20 GB Age Group qualification category! Huge well done!
Team of the Week
For their win in the Copenhagen Shield, the Polo team are this week’s Team of the Week, with wins over Harrow and Millfield along the way. Well done to Leo (Pn), Aramaya (Bl), Charlie (M) and Elizabeth (T).
Summer Term 2025 Week 4
Athletics
Last Friday night saw House Athletics, which was another brilliant event. The Talbot won the Junior Girls, the Lynedoch the Junior Boys and in the Seniors, the Combermere won the Girls and the Hill the Boys. Well done also to all those who competed last week at the English Schools Track and Field Championships Districts Round and the English Schools Track and Field Cup, with a full report to follow after this week’s event too.
Cricket
Wellington enjoyed a successful round of cricket fixtures, with both the girls’ and boys’ teams delivering strong performances. The Girls’ 1st XI secured a convincing 28-run win over St George’s, thanks to a dominant batting display from Zaara (W) (73) and Nishka (T) (50), followed by a disciplined bowling effort led by Ivy (A), who took three wickets. The Girls’ 2nd XI also recorded a solid win. On the boys’ side, the 1st XI posted an impressive 260, anchored by Freddie (Hl) (73) and Jake (E) (54), before bowling out Whitgift with Sam (Bd) and Tom (R) each taking three wickets. The 2nd XI chased down 139 with ease, as Rhuari (E) smashed 77 off 49 balls and Jamie (M) posting 58 not out. The U15C team also impressed with a 15-run victory, highlighted by Patrick’s (S) 56 not out and a fast opening spell from Rihaan (S). Well done to Hal (L) who made 114 off 88 balls in the Development XI too.
Elsewhere, results were more mixed. The U15A and U15B teams both suffered defeats despite notable efforts from James (Bd) (63) and Ed (Bd) (50*), while early fielding brilliance from George (Bd) and Aidan (Bd) showed promise. The U14A and B teams also lost despite determined efforts, with Jake (Bn) top scoring for the As and a spirited bowling display unable to prevent Whitgift’s chase. However, the U14C team produced a confident win by seven wickets, thanks to Frankie’s (A) mature 40 and a well-disciplined team performance in the field. In total, Wellington recorded seven wins across the fixtures, with several standouts and promising signs for the rest of the season.
Golf
Lower Sixth Golf Trip to USA
Last week six Lower Sixth golfers were in the US for the Independent International Invitational tournament at Crumpin Fox, MA. The tournament was a 36-hole event played over two days with some international teams competing with the US school teams. Wellington finished in 2nd place in the team event, with three top 10 finishes from Wellington players: Jamie (E) finished in T2nd place, Eidan (E) and Leo (Bl) finishing in T6th. A fantastic performance demonstrating the strength of Wellington Golf. The team represented Wellington incredibly well at the tournament and several Colleges visited during the week – well done!
Hockey Success Beyond School!
The Hockey Club celebrated fantastic success beyond the school environment last weekend, as Georgia (Hn) and Mr Farrington were both crowned Premier League Champions! Georgia played a key role for Reading Women’s 1st XI, who secured a 1-0 victory in the final against a strong side featuring OW and England international Darcy Bourne. Meanwhile, Mr Farrington helped guide Surbiton Men’s 1st XI to a thrilling 2-1 win in their final. Congratulations to both on these outstanding achievements at the pinnacle of domestic hockey!
Polo
Copenhagen Shield 2025
Wellington (2.5) vs Harrow (2) Won / Wellington (3.5) vs Millfield (0) Won / Wellington (2.5) vs Harrow (3) Lost / Wellington (6.5) vs Millfield (1) Won
Our team defied all odds to win the Copenhagen Shield this weekend at Guards Polo Club. We were the team with the lowest handicap, but every player stepped up and delivered when it mattered most. Captain Leo (Pn) led from the back with real authority, controlling the flow of the game, organising the team brilliantly, and constantly pushing his teammates to give their best. His sharp decision-making and ability to shape the play set the tone throughout. Aramaya (Pn) played with relentless energy, striking powerful, accurate long shots and challenging every opponent he faced. He was everywhere – backing up Leo, keeping the pressure on, and making sure we stayed in control. Charlie (M) showed fantastic horsemanship, combining athleticism and real skill in the saddle. His ability to read the game and switch quickly between defence and attack made a huge difference in every match. Elizabeth (T) did an outstanding job, marking her opponents out of the game with discipline and focus. Her measured and calm approach, along with her skill and awareness of the field, held strong throughout. Their courage, teamwork, and character earned a brilliant victory, one the whole College community can be proud of.
Shooting
Ricky (M) and Fabian (M) came away from the Gloucester County Open (called the Cobweb buster) with silverware in hand. Ricky was the top U25 (Tyro Cup) and top T/O class shooter (Officers Cup) at the event. Due to competition rules, this then precluded him from winning the top cadet (due to winning the Tyro), with Fabian being the 2nd cadet at the County Open.
Tennis
Played 23, Won 10, Lost 13
The U16 Girls Pair of Georgia (Hn) and Linda (Hg), and the U14 Girls Pair of Alayna (T) and Florence C (A) competed well at the Harpenden National Schools Doubles. The level of competition was very high and the girls did really well, both coming 2nd in their groups.
At the Senior House Tennis, the Hardinge won the Girls and the Talbot the Boys events.
Team of the Week
The Boys Cricket 1st XI after an excellent week that saw wins over Harrow where Tom (Hl) took four wickets, and over Whitgift where Sam (Bd) and Tom (R) both took three wickets and Jake (E) made 54 and Freddie (Hl) 73.
Summer Term 2025 Week 3
Cricket
Last week saw lots of cricket, with the sun shining. Particular praise goes to the Boys 1st XI who won their first Cowdrey Cup fixture, the Girls 1st XI winning their National Cup round 1 game and the Girls U15A side in their National Cup game.
From the Boys 1st XI win, well done especially to Sam (Bd) on making 115 and in the Girls U15A game Min (O) who scored 74 not out. Across the club there were other fine efforts with the Boys 2nd XI winning by 3 wickets, the Girls U14A by 6 wickets in their fixture with KES, and the Boys U14A recording a tie with Radley, whilst the Boys U14B lost narrowly in the final over.
Polo
Our team opened the grass season in superb form with a commanding 8–0 victory over Eton. Led confidently by captain Leo (Pn), the side combined skill and teamwork throughout. Jock (L) and Elizabeth (T) both contributed strongly in attack and defence. A dominant all-round performance that bodes well for the season ahead.
Tennis
Played 26, Won 12, Lost 14
In another very busy weekend of tennis there were some fantastic matches all round. With particular credit to the Senior Boys 1st VI who have not beaten Bradfield since 2016, and not to be outdone, the Senior Girls 1st VI won 6-3 too. Credit goes to the Boys 1st pair of Will (Bd) and Toby (Bl) who are unbeaten so far this term.
Team of the Week
The Senior Boys 1st VI. Last weekend saw them win 5-4, away at Bradfield, with the last set going to tie break 9-7, where Seb (R) and Ben (T) saw the team home.
Summer Term 2025 Week 2
Cricket
A good and challenging start to the cricket season with a 50% win rate. This was the first year that Wellington had managed to get six girls’ teams playing, which is a wonderful achievement.
Key performances came in the Girls U14A with Frankie (A) scoring 42* and Olive (Ap) 29* in a match-winning partnership. The Boys 1st XI lost to Cranleigh, however, good contributions came from Ralf (R) (59) and Will (S) (75) and in the week, in a winning cause versus the Free Foresters, Hughie (Hl) and Sam (R) both made 50 and Tom (R) took 4 wickets.
Well done to all involved, especially to those taking wickets and scoring runs!
Tennis
Played 27, Won 8, Lost 19
The Tennis Club fielded lots of teams home and away against Marlborough, playing 27 matches in total. Well done to everyone who represented the College.
Teams of the Week
The Tennis Girls U15 A and B teams. Both teams battled hard at Marlborough and found themselves at 3 sets all going into the final round. All girls contributed to both wins, but credit must go to Clara (T) and Natasha (Hn) in the As and Grace (Hn) and Kitty (Hn) in the Bs, for winning their 3rd sets after two close losses. This showed great resilience and concentration, and was the difference. It wouldn’t have been possible without the rest of the team, and particularly 1st pair Willow (T) and Delores (Hg) leading from the front, winning 3 sets for the loss of just two games.
Summer Term 2025 Week 1
Cricket
The break saw cricket pre-season taking place. Well done to all those who trained and played in fixtures, especially Sam (R) who made 87 not out against Malvern.
Equestrian
Well done to Millie (O) who was at the annual Pony of the Year Show last weekend, which is one of the biggest events in the show jumping calendar with over 600 ponies/competitors. Millie had a brilliant few days with both of her ponies and was awarded Leading Rider for 2025.
Golf
From the Easter break we say well done to Ellie (W) who represented England U16, in a team that defeated Spain. Ellie then went on to win the U16 Girls Division at the Scottish Girls Open Championship, as well as this year’s Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Junior Championship.
Hockey
Well done to the four Wellington girls at the Hockey National Club Finals. Sadly the gold medal eluded Surbiton as they lost 3-1 to Repton but it was a good experience and they finish as national finalists and silver medalists.
Rackets
A massive well done to Lydia (C), Georgia (Hn) and Georgia (T) for all reaching their respective National Rackets finals at Queen’s in the last week of the Lent Term.
Rugby
A huge well done from the last week of the Lent Term to the U16 Boys Sevens rugby team, who following an unbeaten 15s season went on to become National Sevens Champions at Rosslyn Park, simply brilliant.
Running
As ever the Kingsleys was a fabulous way to end the Lent Term and we say well done to everyone who took part, but in particular the Girls winner, Ella (W) and the Boys winner, Daniel (R).
Skiing
Sebastian (Bn) and Emily (Ap), competed at the British Ski Racing Championships in Italy. Both qualified to compete in the National Downhill Championship. Emily made it to the podium in all four disciplines and won two golds; in the National Championships U18 Giant Slalom, and the National Junior Championships Slalom, with her performances earning her 3rd place for the Overall British Women’s Skier.
Team of the Week
The Girls 1st XI, who defeated Marlborough, with Zara (W) making 99 not out and taking a hat-trick, Ivy (A) was also on a hat-trick and Olympia (O) made her 1st XI debut and was part of the match winning partnership with Zara.
Lent Term 2025 Week 11
Climbing
Independent Schools Climbing Competition: Scarlett (Hn) came 4th national U18 in the Bouldering competition and 5th national U18 in Top-Rope climbing; Francis (S) came 19th national U18 in Bouldering competition.
Fencing
The Public Schools Fencing Championships took place in Lee Valley Stadium over three days during the last week. This competition includes some of the best age-group fencers in the country where competitors take part in individual competition with results combined for overall individual and team champions.
Wellington took 15 separate fencers competing across 12 different competitions. The standard was high and notable performances were had by Riya (W), Radley (R) Lyra (W), Alexander (Bl) and Jacob (R).
Two fencers performed exceptionally well:
- Audrey (Hn) comfortably won the Girls Mount Haes Foil beating a competitor from King’s Canterbury 10-4 in the final.
- Madi (E) performed exceptionally across the Girls Senior Event, winning the Foil, 8th in the Epee and 3rd in the Sabre events. These results combined gave Madi enough points to win the overall Girls Senior Competition – Champion at Arms.
Riya (W) won all her matches at the Southern Regional Championships and is the U17 sabre champion. She has qualified for the British Youth Championships which are at the beginning of May in Sheffield.
Football
The weekend saw some excellent fixtures for the football club with Reading Oratory, especially the boys’ 2nd XI who got a tight 2-1 win, but also well done to the girls’ football teams who both reached the quarter-finals at a tournament at Lord Wandsworth College.
Hockey
Well done to all those representing the hockey club this weekend, with two draws away for the senior teams and a high scoring 4-3 win for the U15Bs against St Edward’s, Oxford.
Golf
Last week saw the Micklem Trophy for the golfers, which as ever lived up to its expectations. The team of Ellie (W), Jamie (E), Eidan (E), Will (S), Leo (Bl), Arthur (L) and Benny (Ap) had a great day 1 in the competition, then had a very tight semi-final with Stowe School, but they came through victorious to then take on Winchester in the final, which they finished as 3-2 winners to lift the Micklem Trophy.
Netball
The final Saturday of the Lent Term saw the annual Interhouse Netball competition take place. This was the biggest competition to date, featuring Junior, Inter and Senior competitions. A Teams played 7-a-side format, whilst B Teams played 5-a-side format. It was wonderful to see such great house spirit in action, with teams enthusiastically cheering their peers on throughout the afternoon. The Junior (3rd Form) competition was comfortably won by the Apsley who produced a clean sweep of victories in their round robin, ending 10 points clear of 2nd place. In the Inter years (4th & 5th Form) competition the Combermere won 1st in the A Teams competition, with the Orange taking the B Team title. The Senior competition showcased some competitive netball, with the Combermere winning the B Team competition, and the Anglesey secured their victory following an impressive final against the Wellesley. Well done to overall Junior winners the Apsley, and overall senior winners the Anglesey.

Real Tennis
Georgia (T) won the U16 Schools National Singles, beating a Radley boy 6/3, 6/2 in the final. This is quite some achievement as she was the only female in the draw. I think she is the only girl to ever win it.
Rugby 7s
The Cup squad travelled to Surrey Schools at Richmond Rugby Club and played some superb 7s beating strong RGS Guildford, John Fisher and Hurstpierpoint sides. In the round of 16 we played a physical Abingdon side winning 31-17. This took its toll and we went into the quarter-final against Berkhamsted with only 9 players still standing, going down in a tense game 19-17.
The Vase squad travelled to Reading Blue Coat School who host the Berkshire Schools and played brilliant 7s in the group rounds to finish top, beating St George’s Weybridge, Reading School and the hosts Reading Blue Coat. This meant a 1st place play-off with Reading Oratory who were a step too far against a very physical side. Good luck to all those taking part in the Rosslyn Park 7s next week.
Team of the Week
Last week saw the Micklem Trophy for the golfers, which as ever lived up to its expectations. The team had a great day 1 in the competition, then had a very tight semi final with Stowe School, but they came through victorious to then take on Winchester in the final, which they finished as 3-2 winners to lift the Micklem Trophy.
Lent Term 2025 Week 10
An incredible bumper week of sport, which saw just over 50 fixtures across six sports and included two teams at national finals!
Whilst on the theme of sporting events coming thick and fast, it is worth flagging on the last Thursday of this term, there is the annual Kingsleys run, and additionally after the run, all girls will be attending the Women in Sport Conference hosted alongside The Well HQ.
We also wish the best of luck to those competing or with their final preparations at the Public Schools’ Fencing and Climbing championships, Queen’s in the National Boys Doubles and Girls Singles and those preparing for Rosslyn Park National Rugby 7s.
Golf
Well done to the U15s who had a blast at the second U15 Swift Golf strokeplay series competition. The team showed great resilience and bounced back after a tough first day to come 5th overall. Some great individual performances from Roland (L) who finished 3rd in the Boys’ after getting the low round of the tournament in round 2! Emma (W) and Tara (Ap) also came in 3rd and 4th in the Girls’ tournament.
Well done to Ellie (W) who is one of four girls to be selected to play for England in the annual U16 matches against Spain at the beginning of April, following which she’ll be joining the U18 England Girls’ Squad members for the Girls’ Scottish U18 Individual Championship.
Hockey
Two special mentions for the hockey club this week, firstly that of the U14 team who went away to Abingdon and showed wonderful effort and commitment all game, across many different areas, to finish 3-1 winners. Secondly, a huge well done to the Girls’ U16A team, who played some magnificent hockey over two days at the National Finals, backing up all they have done this season, to finish as the 3rd placed team in the country, exceptional!
Netball
Over the weekend, the 1st team competed in the National Schools’ Finals at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield – an incredible achievement in itself, given the hundreds of schools that enter at county level. A huge well done to the team who finished joint 8th overall, having faced a group that included the eventual winners.
Well done also to all those in the netball club, with over 20 fixtures played last Saturday!
Rugby 7s
Well done to the Boys’ U14 Rugby 7s squad who were at the Reigate tournament and reached the quarter-finals and the U16s who travelled to King Edward’s, Bath and finished 3rd overall.
Running
Well done to Edward (Bn) who last weekend competed brilliantly against the best runners in the country at the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships.
Team of the Week
The Under 16A Hockey girls who played two fantastic games in the National Finals, following an epic season, to finish 3rd in the country, a brilliant achievement.
Lent Term 2025 Week 9
Badminton
U18 Boys played Hurstpierpoint College
The doubles pairs showed exceptional dominance with Andrew (E) and Michael (E) winning convincingly with scores of 21-14, 21-5 and 21-2 in the first three rounds. Ben (R) and Arthur (M) were equally impressive, conceding just one point in each of their first two matches (21-1, 21-1) before winning 21-3 in round three. Sasha (Bl) and Kai (Hl) completed the doubles sweep with strong performances of 21-8, 21-7 and 21-6.
In the final round, which featured a best-of-three sets format, all Wellington pairs continued winning. Andrew (E) and Michael (E) won 21-7, Ben and Arthur secured a 21-6 victory, while Sasha (Bl) and Kai (Hl) claimed a decisive win with scores of 21-6 and 21-7.
The singles match also went our way, with Jerry (Pn) winning all his matches across the four rounds. Jerry (Pn) dominated the remaining rounds with scores of 11-9, 11-5, 10-4, and a decisive 11-1 victory in the final round.
Even more impressive than the clean sweep of victories was the impressive display of teamwork, determination and camaraderie throughout the fixture.
Mixed team played Bradfield College
The mixed doubles pairing of Andrew (E) and Amy (W) delivered a flawless performance, winning all their matches with consistent scores of 21-14, 21-8, and 21-8 in the first three rounds, followed by a 21-14, 21-16 victory in the best-of-three final round.
Ben (R) and Shreya (W) also showed excellent form, winning all their matches including a tight 23-21 victory in Round 2. The pair composed of Kai (Hl) and Sasha (Bl) won three of their four matches, only falling to Bradfield in Round 2 with a score of 16-21, but bouncing back strongly with a 21-17, 21-3 win in the final round.
Michael (E) and Andrew (Bn) contributed to Wellington’s success with wins in the first two rounds (21-18, 21-12) and closed the competition with a hard-fought three-set victory in the final round (9-21, 21-19, 21-19) after dropping a close match in Round 3.
The mixed team demonstrated superior skill and consistency throughout the fixture, securing the win with a decisive 18-3 margin against Bradfield College.
Basketball
Played 5, won 3, lost 2
Well done to all the basketball teams who have had fixtures so far this half term. The U18 Girls team beat Bracknell & Wokingham College 21-11 – the game was played in fantastic spirit and a fitting way to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Senior Boys B team also beat Bracknell & Wokingham College 61-31; a special mention to Jessy (M) who scored 20 points and Altin (Pn) who scored three times during this match. The U14 Boys triumphed 54-40 over St Crispin’s but lost narrowly, 42-35, to Winchester. The U15 Boys also played and lost to Winchester despite scoring an impressive 39 points.
Hockey
Played 8, won 3, drew 1, lost 4
The girls’ 1st XI came incredibly close to booking a spot in the national semi-finals on Wednesday but narrowly went down to a very good Surbiton High team. Similarly the boys’ 1st XI suffered an agonising defeat away at Hurstpierpoint in the Tier Two round of 16 as they drew in normal time and lost out on shuffles. The boys, however, bounced back well with a great 2-1 win away at Canford with only eleven players on a very warm afternoon.
Netball
Played 20, won 14, lost 6
The U15Fs recorded an impressive 25-17 win; they really put into practice the themes they have been working on in training, and won their first game as a team.
Overall a successful weekend of fixtures with all games of blocks against Cranleigh and Seaford played here at Wellington; it was a bumper day, with 20 matches at home in total. There were many victories across all age groups, and it was great to see every netballer in action. Last weekend the 1sts took part in the Seaford 7s competition, winning 3, losing 3 and drawing 1. This tournament was excellent preparation for the National Schools Finals which take place this coming weekend. Best of luck to the team.
Rowing
Well done to Charlotte (W), who rows for Henley Rowing Club in the Women’s Junior Under 14 team and was selected to enter time-trials for the national British rowing junior inter-regional regatta in the double-sculls. Charlotte finished 2nd out of 4 with a time of 7m 36s; with Oxford in first place (7m 29s); ahead of Thames Scullers (Pangbourne) (7m 50s), and Windsor Girls’ Boat Club (9m 23s). Unfortunately, only one team goes through to the Nationals, but a great effort.
Rugby 7s
The U14 VII team travelled to Warwick on Saturday: the group consisted of Princethorpe, Hampton and Portsmouth Grammar which the boys topped with some of the best rugby they have played this year. They then faced Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern in the quarter-final which ended in a 28-28 draw. Sudden death was implemented to try to separate the two teams and unfortunately the opposition crossed the whitewash first. But this is a huge step forward for the U14s and they have been tireless in their efforts to compete and improve.
The U16 VII squad once again played some outstanding 7s at the All England Festival against quality opposition, with notable wins against Marlborough, Epsom, Hurstpierpoint, Harrow and then beating Epsom College in a close final, coming away 17-14 winners. Another superb effort from the boys.
The senior VIIs travelled to Sixways Stadium in Worcester, playing some of the best teams in England and Wales. On day one we had notable group wins against Llandovery, RGS Worcester and Sedbergh 2nd VII. This meant we topped the group.
Day two saw us face Bromsgrove, Seaford and Sedbergh 1st VII in the Cup competition. A slow start left us too much to do against Bromsgrove, but a superb win against a very physical Seaford side meant all was to play for in the final group game against Sedbergh. The boys played their best 7s of the tournament and went down with the final play of the game 17-14. Sedbergh went on to win the final 38-0 against Millfield.
Swimming
At the Bath Cup, the annual swimming event in which competing schools from across the country swim in freestyle and mixed medley relays, the whole team put in a huge effort. Unfortunately, we did not make it to the finals; however, the girls’ team came 12th out of 77 schools in the medley relay, which is a particularly impressive achievement, given the number of schools competing.
Teams of the Week
The U18 Boys and Mixed badminton teams, who not only had excellent results in two fixtures last week, but also demonstrated skill and consistency throughout, along with impressive displays of teamwork, determination, and camaraderie too.

Rugby
It was another exciting weekend of rugby for Wellington College, with strong performances across all age groups. The U14s competed at the All England 7s and continue to show great improvement, gaining valuable experience against top opposition.
The U18s impressed at the Gordon’s School U18 Festival, securing a notable group stage victory over Millfield. They finished as runners-up in the Plate competition, demonstrating resilience and quality throughout.
The U15s faced a tough challenge in the National Cup semi-final, battling hard but ultimately falling 10-0 to Lord Wandsworth. Despite the result, their efforts throughout the tournament have been commendable.
The U16s continued their strong form, winning their second consecutive tournament at the RGS Guildford U16 7s. Their success highlights the depth of talent within the squad.
Overall, it was a weekend of quality rugby, with all teams showing great progress and determination.
Team of the Week
The U15A boys’ footballers, who, having gone 2-0 down, showed fantastic courage and teamwork to come back and win 4-2.

Will (S) had a great weekend in Stockholm in the U20 combined events heptathlon, in his first international competition representing England. Building on his performance at the UK nationals last month, he achieved personal bests in Long Jump, 60m Hurdles, Pole Vault and the 1km, the 1km being a particular highlight as he won that event by taking 11 seconds off his previous best. He ended the weekend with a new overall heptathlon PB and thoroughly enjoyed being part of a talented England squad.
Fencing

Well done to Alex (Bl) and Lyra (W) who competed at the Under 14 South-East Youth Championships. Alex (Bl) competed in both epee and foil and he took the Bronze in foil and finished 7th in epee allowing him to qualify for the British Youth Championship in May. Lyra (W) came 7th in the foil also allowing her to qualify for the British Youth Championship in May.

Hockey

Well done to the girls’ U16A side and the girls’ 1st Xl who have qualified for England Hockey’s Tier 1 1/4 Finals.
Netball
Well done to the U16A netball team for their incredible resilience and determination in their match against Charterhouse’s 2nd team. Going into the final quarter six goals down, they refused to give up, showing true grit and teamwork as they fought back to secure a well-earned draw. Their belief in themselves and commitment to the game were outstanding, and they should be incredibly proud of their performance. A fantastic effort.
Polo
A Team lost 12-10 to Eton
Wellington’s A team put on a fantastic display of skill and determination in a thrilling match against a strong Eton side. Despite the final scoreline, both teams were pushed to their limits in an evenly contested game. Wellington started strong, taking an early lead before Eton responded with fast, attacking play. The match remained tightly fought, with excellent teamwork and precise riding keeping Wellington in contention. By half-time, Eton had edged ahead, but Wellington’s resilience shone through as they fought back, closing the gap in a tense final chukka. Despite a narrow defeat, it was a brilliant team effort, with every player showcasing grit, skill and sporting behaviour. The match was a true testament to the talent on both sides, providing a nail-biting contest until the final whistle.
Polo B Team lost 16-7 to Eton
Despite a tough match against Eton, our girls showed great teamwork and determination. Eton led 7-1 at half-time, but our team fought back, finishing 16-7. A standout moment was Elizabeth’s (T) impressive double-pointer from the 25-yard mark. It was also fantastic to have Lyra (T) from the Third Form join us for her first B team match, showing great promise. The team played with energy and enthusiasm throughout, making the most of every opportunity. With such talent and potential, the future looks bright for this squad!
Rackets
Played 9, won 8, lost1
Riding
Millie (O) competed at a British Showjumping Show at Felbridge Showground last weekend and won the 1M and came 3rd in the 1.10m.
Rugby
The U16 7s squad won the Eton 7s two Sundays ago and then last weekend, the team beat Millfield in the final of the Gordon’s School 7s tournament, with a try from Will (L) in the final play of game to win 24-19, a superb team effort. It was 19-19 when Will (L) collected his own grubber to be brought down on the 22 and offload to Algy (Pn) in support who floated a pass over two defenders’ heads to put Will (L) in the corner.
The U15 boys won the Cup quarter-final away from home last week too, with the final kick of the game against KCS Wimbledon 15-14 and now progress to the semi-final after half term, on Sunday 2nd March, but awaiting other results to see who they play.
Shooting
Played 3, won 3
Well done to Maia (Hn) in her first match for the shooting team, who had the second highest joint score across all three teams (97/100 on 10 bull). As a team, all teams shot exceptionally well against tough teams from Charterhouse. The shooting team have had an undefeated shoulder to shoulder team match season, having beaten Charterhouse this Saturday. The team has grown massively this year, being able to field 12 or 16 people for matches more frequently than previous years.
The following also have national call ups:
Fabian (M) – England B
Natty (W) – England A
Penny (A) – England A
Ilyas (S) – England C
Chung (L) – England C
Julius (T) – England D
Matteo (L)- England D
Ricky (M)- England D
Skiing
As always the Lent Term leave weekend saw the boys’ ski team head to Wengen, Switzerland for the annual British Boys’ Ski Racing Event. The boys were very excited to hit the slopes, however, disaster immediately struck when the airline forgot to put the bags on the plane! Arriving in Wengen and renting the lost equipment the team arrived at the hotel. On Sunday, the team warmed up with some free skiing and then they did some slalom training with the CDC coaches, in all it was a successful day. Sadly, on Monday the weather turned, and we ended up only free skiing instead of doing GS training. That evening was the parallel slalom and with it pouring with rain both teams of four passed the first round (borrowing a skier from another team). The second round both teams were drawn to compete against each other. The A team won and continued until, the semi-finals. After getting soaked to the bone Wellington came 3rd with an impressive performance. On Tuesday, having snowed all night the slalom race was cancelled due to potential risk, as the snow was much too soft and would have made the course unskiable very quickly. With confirmation that the race was cancelled the coaches decided to take the group powder skiing. It was an incredibly fun day filled with the beautiful landscape of the infamous North Face of the Eiger. On Wednesday, the weather was perfect, and the giant slalom took place, starting from the World Cup downhill starting hut. Overall, well done to everyone in the team, especially Oscar (Hl) coming in 7th in the U14s, Morgan (Bn) and Francis (S) coming in 12th and 3rd respectively in the U16s and Sebastian (Bn) coming in 1st in the U18 and overall champion. In the end, team Wellington came 1st overall narrowly beating Harrow!
Team: Sebastian (Bn), Caspar (Bn), Francis (S), Morgan (Bn), Hadrian (Bd), Nicolo (Bl) and Oscar (Hl)
Teams of the Week
The U14E netballers have had a great start to the season, securing five wins from five matches, including impressive victories over Lord Wandsworth C and Teddies D teams. The team has conceded just 24 goals, while scoring 96 goals thanks to the consistent composure and sharp shooting. In the mid-court, the girls have worked brilliantly together, focusing on improving their ball distribution, effectively implementing training drills during matches and successfully honing their centre passes.
The 4th VII, after a tough start to the season, have displayed the fighting spirit and resilience they’ve become known for, to storm to a 23-10 win against their Charterhouse counterparts. Some great defensive work, combined with the centre court team working incredibly hard, earning the player of the match performance for Amelie (C) ensured any interceptions were carried down court. Some fabulous shooting meant the scoreboard was constantly ticking over. Fabulous team spirit shown by all.

Session 4 – March 6th 2025 – 8pm
Badminton
10-6 loss to Bradfield on Thursday: the girls’ team, consisting of two senior pairs and two junior pairs, played Bradfield away. Despite some close matches, they fell short 10-6. Special mentions go to Yun-Yun (W) for her excellent play and Shreya (W) for earning MVP.
4-2 loss to Downe House on Saturday: the girls’ team faced Downe House with 6 pairs, showcasing impressive teamwork and determination. Special recognition goes to Anni (Hn) and Dolores (Hg) for winning their tough matches, and to Sunheri (W) and Reya (W) for earning Senior and Junior MVP.
Football
Despite the weather causing waterlogged and dangerous grass surfaces for most of the week, we say well done to the girls’ 1st XI who recorded their first win of the season, 3-2 against a strong Charterhouse side.
Hockey
The boys’ U15 hockey team had an excellent 5-2 win against Haileybury and the U16 girls had a brilliant 2-1 win away at Repton to reach the national quarter-finals.
Netball
The U15C were the only team to win away at Brighton: they secured the win in the last quarter by gradually improving after each break (Q1: 6-1 down, Q2: 12-8 down, Q3: 16-14 down), finally securing the win 19-18. Excellent play from all players who showed real determination and self-belief in the face of a strong and physical opposition.
The U16Ds played Brighton at home wining 23-10 with Saskia (Ap) scoring 20 of those! Milla (A) won PoTM from the opposition. Ava (Hn) also had a great game in the centre court.
At the Gordon’s tournament the U16As made the semi-finals, with some very strong sides and quality netball being played.
The U14A and 1st team played the regional rounds of National Schools on Saturday. The U14s really stepped up and competed with the best in the region, only narrowly missing out. The game against St Swithun’s proved how far they have come, having lost to the same team last week by 3. Seeing everything we’ve been coaching them over the last few weeks out there on court is a testament to how hard this team has been working. Well done girls, making the semi-finals is such a huge achievement.
The 1st team finished top of their group with some absolutely incredible performances not losing one game in the round robin part of the day. They faced a very challenging semi-final against Portsmouth Grammar, leading from the start they held their nerve and pushed on with a win which guaranteed them a place in Nationals for a fourth year in a row. Well done girls! On to the next round.
Skiing
British Schoolgirls’ Ski Races:
Things started slowly when a storm caused our flight to be cancelled and then we had to divert over Zurich. However, not even a full day of rain on piste could dampen our enthusiasm. In an amazing show of determination and willpower, the 9-strong Welly team girls achieved amazing results across the board, up against 160 girls from across the UK.
From Alexandra (A) winning the unregistered U18 Gold in Slalom and Giant Slalom, mirrored by Emily (Ap) in the registered U18 category, to Gaia (A) being “too good” as an unregistered in the Slalom (a strange rule), but then securing her rightful place on the podium for the unregistered U16 Giant Slalom. Jasmine (O) then claimed Silver in the unregistered U16 Slalom.
Wellington not only came a close 2nd in the A team parallel, they matched this in the overall rankings.
All the girls exceeded expectations against some stiff competition and improved both on and off the slopes, learning how to prep skis after training all day. After the tough racing in such difficult conditions, they were rewarded with an afternoon of fun powder skiing; some conquered their fears, attempting off piste skiing in deep snow for the first time, while others went for a few jumps.
Away from the racing, the team were outstanding ambassadors for the College, receiving very positive feedback from their instructors and the organisers.
British Schoolboys’ Ski Races:
The boys had an unbelievable few days in Wengen. The boys’ teams managed to get the Giant Slalom race completed on the final day as the Slalom had been cancelled due to poor weather. This didn’t stop them from being victorious and walking away with the Sunday Times Trophy for Team Performance. The boys’ best team placed as Giant Slalom champions, with Seb (Bn) winning the event and Francis (S) coming 3rd and the team came 3rd overall in Parallel Slalom. Well skied by all the boys though, as it was an all round team effort both on and off the slopes.
Team of the Week
Both the girls’ and boys’ ski racing teams had success at their respective national events. For the girls, there were many notable individual performances, all of which meant that in the Giant Slalom the best team placed 3rd, in the Slalom and Parallel Slalom 2nd, which saw an overall 2nd placing. For the boys, there were similar individual successes, which saw the best team finish as Giant Slalom champions, 3rd in Parallel Slalom and overall they claimed the Sunday Times Trophy for the best overall school.

Well done the U18 boys’ A and B teams for winning their two matches against Sir Thomas Rich’s School from Gloucester on Thursday. Both matches were fast-paced and filled with excitement with a total of 17 3-point shots being made. The As finished 61-53 and the Bs’ match finished 33-30 but both could have gone either way, so well done to all players for keeping their cool in the final quarter and securing the wins.
Fencing
Fencing match report vs RGS High Wycombe
Illness, injuries and College commitments led to some late substitutions with replacements stepping in at very short notice for the trip to RGS High Wycombe. Three weapons were offered with the hosts opting for an older format of best of nine victories in teams of three. Epée and foil were fenced first. Our sabreurs, James (Bl), Madi (W) and Riya (W) quickly took four victories needing only one more for the match. James secured this in fight six and an easy win followed 7-2. Tom (Bl) and Helen (W) were joined by foilist Radley (R) in the epée and quickly scored five straight victories to win the match with the result again 7-2. Madi, Radley and Riya had a shaky start in the foil match and were 1-3 down after four fights. They levelled at 3-3 after six fights and a victory each secured a narrow win 5-4. A good overall 3-0 weapon win displaying determination and commitment in the absence of some of our more regular fencers.
Football
Despite last week’s awful weather which curtailed any midweek fixtures, the Football Club still had some competitive weekend fixtures against Abingdon, with 5 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw, indicating how close and well matched the block was.
Well done to Callum (Pn) who played in the semi-final of the South London Cup last weekend, where the team won 5-3 with Callum scoring and providing three assists. Good luck in the final at the end of May.
Hockey
Played 3, won 2, lost 1
Netball
Played 23, won 12, lost 10, drew 1
Week 3 saw many fixtures for the College’s netball teams, with matches against Teddies, Headington Rye and St Swithun’s. With sport disrupted by poor weather it was testament to the players’ and coaches’ efforts that so many matches were still successfully played! Friday also saw the annual Upper Sixth Netball vs Rugby fixture, again hotly contested with the netball team only pulling away in the final quarter.
Rackets
Played 10, won 6, lost 4
Well done to the rackets 1st Pairs who started their season strongly, with the boys winning at Eton and the girls beating Cheltenham. There were some brilliant squad performances as well.
Congratulations to Lydia (C) and Georgia (T) who both came through qualifying and have reached the main draw of the Ladies British Open Rackets.
Skiing
Congratulations to Emily (Ap), who has been nominated by the British Olympic Committee to represent Team GB in Alpine Skiing at the European Youth Olympics in Bakuriani, Georgia.
Swimming
Sienna (W) at the counties galas had some great swims and won the Open Age group 200m Butterfly and achieved an impressive time of 2.22mins, which means she has qualified to attend British Trials in April.
Squash
Despite not progressing further, we say well done to the girls’ squash team who had a national schools’ meet, competing against many girls a number of years older where they put in a huge effort. The future looks very bright for the team.
Team of the Week
A stellar performance both in and out of possession led to the boys’ 2nd XI football team gaining a deserved 3-1 victory against Abingdon. A first half penalty from Joe (R) put the side 1-0 up at the break following some determined forward play from Joe (R), Sasha (M) and Miles (Pn). Abingdon equalised early on in the second half but a sublime back-heel-volley from Miles (S) and a tidy finish from Sasha (M) put the game to bed. Miles (Pn) with the PotM performance.

Athletics
Huge congratulations to Will (S) who won the bronze medal in the England National U20 Indoor Combined Events Champs in Sheffield this weekend, a great achievement.
Basketball
An outstanding team performance from the girls’ basketball team on Thursday saw them triumphant over The American School in England (TASIS) who travelled over from Surrey. At half time, the scores were close with Wellington up by 7-6. A strong second half performance saw the girls bring home the victory with the score finishing 21-10. A special mention for Pita (A) who scored 11 points. Well done to all involved!
Football
The football club had a number of solid performances on Saturday with the boys’ 1st XI finishing 3-1 winners, the U16A, U15A and B teams, and the U14A and B also recording wins to get the season up and running.
Hockey
Played 6, won 5, drew 1, lost 0
A very positive start to the Lent Term hockey fixtures saw all Wellington teams unbeaten, winning five and drawing one. Notable 5-1 wins were recorded by the boys’ 1st XI and the U15B teams and a very solid 3-1 win for the 2nd XI against Harrow.
Netball
After a tentative start, the U16Bs fought back hard against Marlborough and only lost by two goals. There was some great game play and impressive interceptions from all the players both in attack and defence. It was the unforced errors that made the difference between the two teams. It’s been lovely seeing the girls work so well together already and we’re excited about seeing them develop further over the coming weeks!
The U14As had a good win against Marlborough by 22 goals to 9.
The first two quarters were very evenly matched with only two goals in it at half time 8-6. A strong third quarter from Wellington opened up a good lead which they built on in the last quarter. Opposition Players of the Match were Lexie (Ap) and Lotti (Ap). Issie (T) was a welcome return to the squad and was outstanding at GK, taking lots of interceptions and forcing attacking errors by the opposition. Michele (W) also gave a very strong performance at C.
A win for the U14C team as well, ending with 25-19! A wonderful win, after initially being behind in the first quarter. They played so well, with great match play in all thirds. Chloe (O) did a fantastic job as shooter this week. Keep up the great work, girls!
A good match against Marlborough for the U14Ds with some strong teamwork shown by the girls and responding very well to feedback, ending in a 14-10 win. Athena (Hn) really made her mark in the centre position finding some great spaces and facilitating quick drives forward. Lili (A) did a fantastic job at shooter. Well done to all the girls.
Polo
Congratulations to Leo (Pn) who played for the Ranelagh team in an International day arena match, between England and Argentina at Hickstead for the governing body of the sport, the HPA.
Running Club
A big well done to the Wellington athletes at the Berkshire Schools Cross Country, which saw Edward (Bn) finish 2nd in the U15s and four runners in the top 21 in the U19 category. Good luck to Edward as he represents the Berkshire team at the National Finals.
Squash
Well done last week to the girls’ team, who won 8-4 against Wycombe Abbey and also to the boys who were at the Roehampton tournament, which saw some brilliant squash matches played, with the boys finishing 5th overall, amongst some tough opposition.
Team of the Week
The U15B netball team who ground out an epic win. Special mention to Sophie (O) who played much of the second half feeling her ankle and Gigi (O) who absolutely led from the front. Having gone into the final-quarter 12-10 down, the team won the fixture with the final chance of the game. Well done, girls.

Basketball
Our basketball team put on an incredible performance at this year’s Independent Schools Tournament, going head-to-head with some of the top schools in the country. The day produced some hugely entertaining matches with exceptional team performances throughout. Huge congratulations to all the players and coaches involved. We are so proud of the Wellington team, who showed incredible grit to make it to the final! With the ongoing development of the programme and the experience gained from international training camps, the future of basketball at Wellington is looking brighter than ever.
Fencing
Fencing match report vs Eton, away, 9th January
Eton are traditionally strong at home and our fencers expected a tough fixture.
Sabre saw the welcome return of Victor (R) assisted by James (Bl) and Jacob (R). They dominated early and had a 20-16 lead after four of the nine fights. The lead can change very quickly in sabre and the match swung towards Eton. Victor claimed nine hits in the penultimate fight to take the lead again 40-37 but Eton closed out by just three hits 45-42 in an exciting match.
A slightly weakened epee team had a strong start and Helen (W) and Tom (Bl) with Radley (R) doubling up from foil, were ahead 20-15 after four fights but couldn’t maintain it against a strong Eton team with the final result 29-45.
Foil followed with Alex (Bl) getting his second cap along with Annie (Hn) and Radley. Eton had a big height and age advantage and with Madi (W) away fencing at senior level it was always going to be a challenge. As in epee, the match was very close early on with Eton ahead by only one point after four fights 19-20. They quickly extended this lead despite some aggressive fencing and some beautifully timed hits by our foilists it was a 45-34 victory for Eton.
Madi (W) was at a full Senior FIE World Cup in Hong Kong last weekend, with almost 200 of the world’s best including the Olympic gold medallist Lee Kiefer (USA), therefore knowing it was going to be tough in her second senior outing. In the group round she didn’t get any wins and ended up not making cut and finishing 178/190. Madi did however very much hold her own, which is positive and she knows she will have to continue to work hard to compete at the top level.
Well done to Alex (Bl) who took part in the Surrey epee (U14) and missed a place in the top 8 by one hit.
Football
Special mention to the girls’ 1st XI football who travelled to St Edward’s and, despite finishing 2-1 down, played superbly in what was described by all there as a cracker of a game.
Netball
Played 10, won 5, lost 5
U14E and U14F had their first games against Lord Wandsworth College, securing two victories!
Well done to all netball teams that got their first run out of the netball term against St John’s last week. Especially to our U14A/B, who for some took to the court for their very first time for Wellington. On Friday night the 1st team played St John’s for the opening of their new sports hall. It was a really well contested match. Wellington took an early lead with some great through court attacking work from centre pass to goal, leading by 10 at half time we went on to win the game 31-39. Sofia (A) had a fantastic entry into the game this week keeping strong on her holds in a challenging circle.
The first match of the season for the U16Bs was a competitive one against St John’s 4ths. The girls worked together well in their first outing as a team and dominated St John’s for a significant part of the game. The opposition fought back in the 3rd quarter to level the score but the girls dug deep to hold their lead, eventually winning 24-21. Aggie (A) was Player of the Match.
Team of the Week
This week’s Team of the Week goes to the boys’ U18 basketball 1st team, who at the Independent Schools Tournament hosted at Wellington finished as runners-up after playing a brilliant final which ended 15-14, following an attritional afternoon of basketball.

Will (S) won the gold at the U20 South of England Indoor Combined Events Champs (heptathlon) on the weekend after term finished, well done.

Lydia (C) and Emilia (C) became U18 national rackets runners-up, with Georgia (T) and Georgia (Hn) going one better and claiming the U16 national title at Queen’s Club.
Real Tennis
Schools National Real Tennis Championships
Wellington performed well in the Nationals with Reuben (S) winning his first round in the U18 A Singles at Hardwick against Radley, only to lose in a closely fought contest in the second round to St George’s College.
In the U18 B Singles at Wellington club captain Ryan (R) bowed in a three-set thriller in the first round to the eventual runner-up from Canford. Archer (R), however, blasted through every round to the final 2 sets to love. The final looked as if it was going to be more of the same with Archer taking the first set 6-1, but then Canford rallied to take the second set at 5 all, 40 all. Archer’s stamina and hard hitting then saw him take the championship in the third set 6-0.
In the U16 Doubles Francis (S) and Georgie (T) struggled to find their length on the Radley court bowing out in the first round to Canford 1 (4-6,1-6).
In the U15 Doubles Wellington 2 and 3 gained excellent experience for next year’s championship, whilst Wellington 1 (Rory and Danny, Pn) went from strength to strength in the opening rounds. A strong performance over Canford 1 (6-1) saw them through to the final against Colyton Grammar. The final was close: the first four games going to 40 all, of which Colyton won three. Colyton capitalised on this advantage staying just ahead throughout the set, winning 8-3. An excellent performance from the Picton boys.

Wellington College triumphs – Canada Cup 2024
Nine of our Wellington College skiers recently competed at the Canada Cup Festival in Jasper, Alberta, from 9th-19th December. The event featured five days of training followed by three days of competition in the Dual Slalom, Giant Slalom and Slalom events, set against the stunning Rocky Mountains backdrop.
Our skiers competed alongside peers from six other schools, including Harrow, Reed’s, Dulwich College, Marlborough College, Eton and Westminster. After time trials, Victor (M), Oscar (Hl), and Cecilia (E) earned places in the Canada Cup division, while Diane (C), Tabitha (Hn), Evie (T), Laszlo (M), Alex (T), and Wilf (Bn) competed in the Challenge Cup.
The team achieved outstanding results, bringing home eight medals and one trophy. Highlights included the Women’s Team winning gold in the Giant Slalom Challenge Plate and the squad earning gold in the Dual Slalom Canada Cup Plate. The team also secured silver in the Canada Cup Plate, shared with Marlborough College.
Individual successes were equally impressive. Diane (C) won gold in both the Challenge Cup Slalom and the Women’s Challenge Cup Giant Slalom. Oscar (Hl) earned silver in the U14 Giant Slalom Canada Cup, while Tabitha (Hn) and Evie (T) joined Diane (C) on the podium in the Women’s Challenge Cup Giant Slalom, claiming silver and bronze.
The festival concluded with a gala dinner at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, where achievements were celebrated with fellow competitors.
We are proud of the team’s dedication, sportsmanship and hard work, which brought great recognition to Wellington College. As we look ahead, we wish our ski team continued success at the upcoming British Schoolboys Championships in Wengen and the British Schoolgirls Championships in Flaine later this month.
Well done also to Lucy (O) who had a wonderful Christmas and New Year on the slopes, getting a gold medal in the U18 Anglo-Scottish Giant Slalom and silver in the U18 Giant Slalom.

Gymnastics
Well done to Amelia (W) who competed at FaceOff 2024 in front of a packed arena of 10,000, which was an incredible experience. After a tricky opening round in which she got heavily penalised as one of her moves was deemed dangerous, she was in 6th place. However, Amelia dug deep and pulled back, initially to 3rd and then on her final jump of the competition she claimed 2nd place overall.
Hockey
The girls’ 1st Xl travelled to St John’s to play in their second last England Hockey Tier 1 game of the term. After an incredibly tight game, a moment of brilliance from Cecily (O) saw her carry the ball the length of the pitch eliminating more than half of the opposition’s defenders and calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal with only two minutes to play. Well done to the entire team for a gritty performance near the end of a long term.
Netball
On Tuesday the 1st team played Epsom College in the fourth round of the Sisters In Sport independent schools’ cup. The game got off to a bit of a slow start as we went 4-1 down in the first five minutes. The girls warmed up into the quarter and it ended 9-7 to Epsom. After a storming 2nd and 3rd quarter the girls came into a very strong lead. The final score ended 35-29. The opposition player of the match was awarded to Amelie (W). Well done to all 12 players who played in the game. On to the next round!
Well done to Cara (E) who has been selected for Ireland U17 for Netball Europe.
Swimming
Well done to Sienna (W) who had some great swims at the Winter Nationals, the highlight of which was that she made it through to the age 17 and under finals for 200 fly where she improved on her heat time and came 6th overall.
Team of the Week
The netball 1st team for their Cup win, which sees them through to the quarter-finals of the Sisters In Sport independent schools’ cup.
Team of the Term
This term’s Team of the Term was well contested between the following teams: the Colts A and Junior Colts B rugby teams who were unbeaten and also the U15A girls’ hockey team who lost only one fixture in the Cup this term. However, the final decision goes to the 4th XV who have quietly built a brilliant season. They have not lost a game, despite playing three 1st XV teams and they also beat Tonbridge, a team that they have not beaten for a decade at this level. Every single player has played their part in a remarkable season.

The girls’ team took on Oxford MCS this weekend in a new format featuring eight singles and four doubles matches. After a series of closely contested battles, the match ended in a well-fought draw. Both teams demonstrated great determination and skill throughout. Special mentions go to Sunheri (W) and Yun-Yun (W), who won their doubles match to level the score, and to Teni (A) whose great performance earned her Player of the Match.

Well done to Riya (W) who has been competing in British Fencing competitions that help build up ranking points for the U17s/18s/21s. Last weekend she achieved her best result when she took the Gold in the British Fencing DEU Senior Women’s Sabre competition.
Football
There was a solid performance from the U16As, who picked up a well-earned 1-0 win at home against Sherfield School. Some expectational performances from the U15As saw them notch up 25 goals and concede 0. They worked extremely hard and have shown great progression from the start of term. Stand out performances came from Benedict (R) and Anjy (M) after scoring 4 goals each this week.
Hockey
Played 15, won 7, drew 3, lost 5
The 1st Xl continues their impressive start in the England Hockey Tier One competition this week with a hard fought win over Bede’s on Tuesday. On Saturday the Hockey Club saw excellent performances from the U15As to win 7-4 and there were also solid wins for the U14C and D teams too.
Netball
Played 7, won 3, lost 4
1st team in the Sisters in Sport 3rd round cup game won 39-26.
The 3rd team played St Catherine’s on Tuesday. Our team was down a shooter, Catinca (Hg) did an amazing job in stepping in from GK. Sienna (A) at WD turned over the ball multiple times in the third quarter to end the quarter score 5-4. The final score was 20-6 to St Catherine’s. There are a few players in the team who are completely new to playing netball this year, who have really started to understand the game and progress really well on their basic skills. Well done girls, it was a really great effort from the whole team!
The U15As played a Plate fixture against Alleyn’s School. Despite going into the first break 8-1 down, the team fought back to a draw in the third quarter. The lead swung between the teams for the final 20 minutes of the fixture ending 27 all at full time. The match then went to golden goal, with Alleyn’s gaining possession and scoring with an excellent final shot. It was a great example of resilience by the Wellington team, who could easily have let their heads drop. Well done to Lily (C) who was Player of the Match.
On Saturday a number of teams played Downe House in some friendly fixtures. The 2nds played a tightly contested match against DH’s 1sts. A mixed U16 and U15 team stepped up and played DH 2nds, putting out an impressive 48-14 win. Excellent shooting from Gigi (O) and midcourt play from Isabelle (W) saw them awarded players of the match. The U14s achieved a comprehensive win, and the 3rds saw good rotations and exposure.
Well done to Amelie (W) who has been selected for Scotland U19 for Netball Europe.
Rackets
Played 10, won 2, lost 8
Rugby
Played 12, won 6, lost 6
The Rugby Club had fantastic fixtures with Tonbridge, including wins away from home for the 1st and 2nd XVs and excellent home wins for the Colts 1 and J. Colts 1 and B. The 4th XV also deserve special mention for remaining unbeaten and defeating Tonbridge for the first time in a decade. The boys showed incredible focus and concentration to build pressure and score after some perfect phase play. With powerful running from Oscar (L), Oscar (Bn) and Henrik (Bd) who also slotted two conversion kicks, Wellington went into half time 19-0 up. This lead was then protected in the second half with unwavering bravery in defence. This is a team with exceptional cohesion and spirit and it feels unjust not to name every player. Every single one played their part in a remarkable victory against a previously unbeatable opposition.
Running Club
The Running Club took part in the Chase The Moon Battersea Park 5k, along with 410 other runners. Huge congratulations to our Wellington squad for an excellent night of running. The team did themselves proud. Our leading quartet saw Daniel (R) come in in 11th place in 16.33, Jamie (M) 19th in 17.12, Arthur (Pn) in 33rd in 17.56 and Quentin (T) 66th in 19.21 and they were ably supported by Poon (E) in 90th, Harry (S) 99th, Barney (M) 108th, Marcus (S) 169th and Caspar (Bn) 214th. A superb team effort with quality performances all round.
Shooting
The shooting team fielded its largest match at home for some years, with both Bradfield and Gresham’s attending for a triangular match. Having just beaten Bradfield last Thursday, they’d regrouped and came back with a near full strength team, with Gresham’s bringing mostly their junior shooters from Nottingham.
We had three matches, with a Team of Eight, a Trio team, and a Pair, against each school. Rather than the usual ‘one card’ match, we opted for a ‘two card’ match, which helps highlight teams that are capable of being consistent and also enduring the marathon time taken (13:00 start, finish 18:00!) This style shouldn’t pose a problem (normal training involves two or three cards per session), but under match conditions funny things do happen.
Our A team (Eight) had a very strong shoot, with a 1539/1600 finish score, against Bradfield’s 1502/1600, and Gresham’s 1479/1600. The second round of cards saw a decrease in performance for both Wellington and Bradfield across the teams of Eights, with Gresham’s showing that they were quick to adapt and performed better on the second shoot. Top score by Fabian (M), with a 196/200. This match was shot on 10 bulls.
For the Trio match, Wellington scored 584/600, Bradfield hot on our heals with 578/600, and Gresham’s not far behind with 573/600. This match was shot on 5 bulls, and top score was Lucas (M) with an exceptional 200/200.
For our Pairs match, Bradfield were short-handed so Gresham’s fielded two pairs. Our Pairs won, with a score of 392/400, Gresham’s B pair in 2nd with 389/400, and their C pair in 3rd with 381/400. Top score from Cindy (C), with a 198/200, narrowly missing her first 100 on both shoots.
Sunday saw us once again travel to Farncombe and Godalming Rifle club, to shoot the BSSRA Winter Championship open cards. Whilst we don’t have the final results yet, we are hopefully looking at a few podium finishes. But until results are published, we shall just have to wait.
Skiing
Emily (Ap) has kicked off her 2024-25 ski season with two Slalom FIS races in Switzerland and two Giant Slalom races in Austria. She had to cope with conditions from extremely soft snow to sheet ice and even had a complete ‘whiteout’ for one race. Still, she not only managed to complete all runs successfully, she posted personal bests in all four of her races, including a victory in her first FIS race, reaching the top of the podium in Zinal! Congratulations.
Swimming
Taking on Marlborough, Bromsgrove and Sherborne. Despite not being able to participate in the U16 girls’ relays, Wellington came 3rd. Matthew (Pn), Sienna (W), Liesl (C) and Martha (O), all came 1st in their respective events.
Tennis
Well done to the tennis team of Will (Bd), Oli (T), Toby (Bl), Issie (T), Pietro (M) and Anna (E), who showed their strength and how their hard work has paid off with a 9-0 win away at Bradfield.
Team of the Week
This week’s Team of the Week goes to the squad of nine runners who took part in an excellent night of running at the Chase The Moon Battersea Park 5k. With over 400 runners competing, the whole team did themselves proud and saw three runners in the top 50, with all in the top half.

Basketball
Well done to all involved in the U15 mixed fixture against RHS Ipswich. The Suffolk-based opposition travelled the 260-mile round trip and returned to East Anglia victorious. The deficit was large but Wellington’s spirits remained high throughout the match. A special mention to Elina (Ap) for getting on the scoresheet.
Cricket
Nishka (T) has been selected to the Surrey County Cricket U16 Girls Performance Winter Training.
Fencing
A comprehensive win against a developing Bradfield team. Special mention to our debutante, Alex (Bl) who lost only 5 points during his first appearance in the team.
Football
Bradfield: lost 3, drew 1
Some really competitive fixtures which saw our U14s and U15s lose narrowly and our 3rd XI draw 3-3 in an exciting back and forth contest.
Hockey
The girls’ 1st Xl drew 2-2 in freezing conditions on Wednesday afternoon as they remain unbeaten in their Tier 1 England Hockey league.
The girls’ U16 indoor squad were narrowly beaten in the semi-finals of the regional indoor tournament on Tuesday afternoon and the boys’ U18 indoor squad put in a strong performance in their regional tournament narrowly missing out on a place in the semi-final.
Finally, the girls’ U14A side put in a top performance on Thursday as they pushed a very good Surbiton High side all the way in the last 16 of the national U14 cup!
Netball
The 1st team played their third round Sisters in Sport Cup game against St Catherine’s at home on Thursday. They took a commanding 17-4 lead in the first quarter, with all squad members taking to the court and contributing to the win. The final score was 39-26 to Wellington.
Rackets
Played 4, won3, lost 1
Rugby
The rugby club played five games against Sedbergh, winning three and losing two. The senior 3rd XV and 4th XV played matches against St John’s Leatherhead and Westonbirt respectively, both having competitive fixtures. The U16B team also had a very competitive game against Westonbirt.
An exceptional week of rugby showcased the best of school sport, with every team demonstrating remarkable skill, resilience and commitment. The U14A delivered their strongest performance of the season against Sedbergh, showing immense determination in defence and creating several scoring opportunities despite a 17-5 defeat. The U15A, continuing their fine form, overcame a physical Sedbergh side in a thrilling, end-to-end match, securing a well-deserved victory. The U16A delivered a commanding 37-14 victory, while the 2nd XV earned ‘Team of the Week’ honours for their heroic defensive effort. Meanwhile, the 1st XV engaged in a thrilling contest, leading 17-7 at half-time thanks to disciplined defence and a dominant forward game. Despite their best efforts, Sedbergh’s late surge secured them a narrow 28-27 victory. This fixture epitomised the essence of school rugby — passion, determination and the unwavering spirit of the game on full display. This is why we play.
Shooting
Both the A and B 10 bull teams successfully beat Bradfield College. With the A team winning by an impressive 12 points over four shooters. Penny (A) top scored with the highest possible score of 100 out of 100.
It is worthy of note to say a big well done to the Rifle Shooting Club as a whole as all years, A & B teams, mixed gender remain undefeated for all matches thus far this term with a very impressive score win margin for the last two.
Swimming
Well done to both Martha (O) and Sienna (W) who have qualified for Swim England’s Winter National Championships in December, Martha in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke and Sienna in the 100m and 200m Butterfly.
Squash
National schools and fixture against Bradfield and Oxford.
The girls’ squash team, in a National Schools Championship fixture, had two group matches against Bradfield and Oxford. The team won both matches 5-0 and 4-1 in a senior event with a number of younger members in the Wellington team, which is a good sign of things to come too.
Team of the Week
The 2nd XV were one of three Wellington teams to win at Broadstreet against Sedbergh on Wednesday but have been given Team of the Week for the manner in which they won their closely contested match. The team came from 5-0 down to lead 10-5, all within the first 12 minutes of the game. There was no score for the remaining 52 minutes, and much of the second half saw Wellington defending deep inside their own 22. Every single member of the squad played their part. The NextGen commentator said, “This is a world-class display of defence”.

Basketball
The U18 boys’ basketball team played excellently against a strong Farnborough Sixth Form College. It was a hard-fought contest: tied 28-28 after the 2nd quarter of the game and 43-43 after the 3rd. Well done to Daniel (M) and Hugo (M) scoring 11 and 15 points, respectively. The final score ended up being 55-57 in favour of the Hampshire opposition. A brilliant display from Wellington and signs of what is yet to come for this talented team.
Football
Well done to Tekla (Ap) who has been successful in her trial to join Chelsea Football Club Girls Player Development Centre.
Last week saw the 1st XI win 4-2 against a strong Winchester side. Goals from Jasper (S) (on his debut), Oscar (Hl) and Sasha (M) capped a great performance from the squad.
Fencing
The College welcomed RGS High Wycombe foil, epee and sabre teams for the second home fixture of the season.
Epee saw our fencers facing tough physical opponents but an early lead was established 20-18 after the fifth of nine fights in the race to forty-five hits. Tom (Bl) scored an excellent ten hits in the next fight to extend the lead again to 30-26. Solid fencing from Helen (W) and Freddie (R) put the match out of reach of the visitors with a good 45-36 win.
Sabre started shortly after epee and it was clear from the first fight that our sabreurs would dominate an inexperienced RGS team. James (Bl), Jacob (R) and Keely (O) were never in trouble and closed out 45-19.
Foil was intense and closely fought but Madi (W), Annie (Hn) and Radley (R) were never behind leading 40-39 going into the last fight and winning 45-41 to close the afternoon with three good match victories.
Hockey
Played 9: won 7, drew 1, lost 1
Special mention to the U14D girls who recorded a very impressive 5-0 win against Canford’s U15C team.
Netball
On Saturday six netball teams travelled to St Swithun’s in Winchester to play the biggest fixture we have competed in this term. St Swithun’s is a strong netball school, and it was a great opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best school players in the region.
The U15As played a thrilling game against St Swithun’s U16Bs, going goal for goal throughout the game. Excellent defending from Ella (W) and shooting from Chloe (O) kept the match close throughout, with St Swithun’s snatching the win in the final minutes. The U16As showed great improvement in their fixture, with high work rate and smart rotations in the attacking circle. Lily (C), playing up, and Maya (A) were players of the game. The U14As and U14Bs got the opportunity to play St Swithun’s for the first time, and all got thoroughly stuck in. Well done to Flossie (A) and Anni (Hn) who were voted Players of the Match. Further standout performances came from Tessa (Hn) and Freya (A).
Rugby
Fixtures last weekend against Lord Wandsworth College and Cranleigh saw 11 fixtures: won 7 and lost 4. The games included a dominant win for the 5th XV and a hard-fought 25-24 win for Yearlings 3.
Well done to J. Colts 1 for their 22-11 win in the National Cup and good luck to them in the next round.
Shooting
A good performance from the A team of four for the English Schools Long Range on 9th November, for which results have now been released. The A team of four were successful in reclaiming the trophy from Charterhouse, and beating Sedbergh and Bradfield A teams by 1 and 2 points respectively! This competition saw 10 schools, with 30 total teams of four, compete for the English Schools Long Range trophy, so an impressive feat by Penny (A), Natty (W), Julius (T) and Ricky (M). Our Junior and Senior pairs saw 2nd and 3rd place respectively, being beaten by 5 points and 1 point respectively. Penny (A) was 2nd in the overall individual competition, being beaten by 1 point for 1st place (196 with 13 centres, against 197 with 11 centres).
On 16th November we went to Epsom College for the first time in, well, a long time! Mr Allum doesn’t recollect any Epsom vs Wellington match being held at Epsom in the last 18 years at least. Two teams of seven, with our A team and then a mixture of Bs and Cs to compete against their As and Bs and Cs mixture (a nice way to get experience in shoulder-shoulder matches!). Both our teams shot strongly against Epsom’s teams, with the A team winning with 663/700 vs 648/700, and the BCs winning with 645/700 vs 627/700.
Swimming
The girls’ team consisting of Nell (Hg), Sienna (W), Liesl (C) and Martha (O) came 1st in the U18 Girls’ Free Relay and IM Relay. Martha and Sienna also came 1st in the U18 50m Breaststroke and U18 50m Fly respectively.
Well done to Sienna (W) who has qualified for Winter Nationals in the 200m Fly.
Team of the Week
The fencing team. Facing a full opposition from RGS High Wycombe, the fencing team put in a good effort to win all three weapons against RGS to finish with an unassailable 3-0 win at home. A strong team performance by all.

We then gained momentum and won all our matches in rounds 3 and 4. Huge congratulations to the team for the good performance, and Tiger (M) for being the player of the match.
Basketball
Well done to the U14 boys’ basketball team who triumphed 48-17 over Bohunt School, Wokingham. Point scorers included Joey (S) with 16, Derek (L) with 13 and Samuel (S) with 8. Well done to Lachie (M), Mofe (S) and Ade (Bn) for making their debuts and getting on the scoresheet too.

Well done to Zaara (W) who has been re-selected to the Surrey Emerging Player Program for the 24/25 season.

Last week saw excellent midweek results for the U14As in the National Cup, with an 8-7 penalties win over Cranleigh and the 3rd XI winning 11-0 against St Joseph’s. On Saturday, of ten games against St Edward’s, the club recorded six wins.
Football
A strong showing from the Football Club last week. The 1st XI boys beat a tough Epsom side 2-1 to progress to the next round of the National Cup, followed by block fixtures against Gordon’s and Lord Wandsworth, with competitive fixtures across the board. Well done to Nick (T) scoring his first goal for the College in the 3rd XI’s 7-0 win.
Netball
The 1st team had a Cup game against Gordan’s on Tuesday and won 36-23 and are through to the 3rd round.
The 1st and 2nd teams played Canford on Saturday: the 1st team won 38-27 and the 2nd team lost 16-30.
Polo
Matches vs Harrow
A team: won 8-4; B team lost 7-4
This week’s polo fixtures against Harrow showcased skill, determination and teamwork from both the A and B teams, with the A team delivering a commanding victory and the B team showing exceptional promise in a closely contested match.
Charlie’s (M) excellent ride-offs and AC’s (Hn) precision hitting kept the game on a knife’s edge. Going into the final chukka, the scoreline was razor-thin, and the tension palpable. Despite their efforts, Harrow capitalised on key opportunities in the closing moments, pulling away to secure a 7-4 victory. Both matches demonstrated the depth of talent and tenacity within the squads, with the A team’s tactical brilliance and the B team’s potential providing plenty to celebrate and build on for future fixtures.
In the A team, the victory was not just about scoring goals but about the quality of their teamwork. They minimised mistakes by supporting one another, whether it was with sharp calls, tactical passes, or rallying encouragement. This match demanded constant coordination and split-second decision-making, and they delivered in every moment. For the A team, this win is a monumental boost in confidence, proving what’s possible when individuals come together with shared focus and trust. It’s a well-deserved highlight in their journey as a team and an inspiring example for others.
Rugby
Last Thursday the 4th XV played St Joseph’s, Reading, and won 12-7 in a very tight game.
Saturday against Clifton College: Eleven fixtures winning seven games out of eleven. The 3rd XV, Junior Colts 3, and the Yearlings 2 recorded impressive victories.
Squash
National Schools against Downe House: Girls lost 4-1.
National Schools against Peter Symonds College: Girls lost 4-1.
Team of the Week
Polo A team – Leo (Pn), James (L) and Emily (Hn). Over the past eight weeks, they’ve shown an unwavering commitment to their training, tackling intensive sessions with grit and determination. This rigorous preparation has sharpened not only their technical skills but also their understanding of the game, building a solid foundation for their success.

Badminton
The girls played Downe House: played 16, won 7, lost 9. Well played Downe House for a close fixture. The boys played Charterhouse: played 8, won 4, lost 4. Draw.
A first fixture against Downe House. It was a good one with many tight scores. The Downe House 3rd pair is to be commended for winning all their games. Special mentions to Amy (W) and Shreya (W), who are the 1st pair and played the best. The boys’ fixture was close with many close rallies in the top half. Well done to the four boys who won all their games in the lower half of the fixture.
Wellington played Epsom College this week: the boys played 9, won 3, lost 4 and drew 2; the girls played 6, lost 3 and drew 3.
Everyone played really well and showed great sporting behaviours, despite losing to the Epsom side. Shoutout to Sasha (Bl) for playing well and to the team for their effort this half term.
Basketball trip
The basketball tour to Cleveland over the holiday was a huge success. The players made full use of world-leading facilities at the SPIRE Institute during a three-day training camp, visited Walsh University and watched two Cleveland Cavaliers NBA matches. This included the match versus LA Lakers and seeing the first father-son same-team duo in NBA history. Thanks to all who attended and made the trip a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching experience.
Gymnastics
Amelia (W) and the GBR senior mixed team won a silver medal at the TeamGym European Championships in Azerbaijan. As the youngest competitor in the senior competition, Amelia delivered some huge skills on both Tumble and Trampette, as well as executing a stunning floor routine.
Hockey
Played 1, won 1
The girls’ 1st Xl put in a strong performance against St George’s on Thursday in their first Tier 1 England hockey fixture of the year. The entire squad pulled together and put in a gritty performance winning 4-2 after finding themselves 1-0 down at half time. The second half of term will see the Tier 1 fixtures come thick and fast as the girls aim to finish in the top two in their pool in order to qualify for the national quarter-finals.
Congratulations to Georgia (Hn) who over half term was selected to be part of the England U18 hockey squad.
Netball
Well done to Cara (E) who has been selected for the Pulse Power U19 netball squad.
Rackets
Played 9, won 6, lost 3
Rugby
The 1st team played at the St Joseph’s Festival over the first weekend of half term.
Day 1 saw the boys play some outstanding rugby beating Strathallen, Hurstpierpoint and Kirkham Grammar.
Day 2 we faced Millfield in the quarter-final which gave us the opportunity to exact revenge for the loss in the block fixture a few weeks earlier. The team played with ambition and skill against Millfield and in the twenty-minute match dominated with high-quality attack and resolute defence leading to a very mature performance winning 17-5. We then faced RGS High Wycombe in the semi-final who are a very effective and pragmatic team; they took an early lead in the game which we could not quite come back from. We went on to beat Brighton College 10-7 in the 3rd/4th place play-off in a fiercely contested match, which sets us up for a cracker in the final weekend of the term. All in all the squad was a credit to the College and played superb rugby in a festival that tested us against familiar and unfamiliar opposition.
Finally, well done to the Junior Colts 1 rugby team who won the Langley National Rugby Festival for the third time in four years, conceding only 5 points all weekend and showing great character throughout. The Player of the Tournament was Bertie (Hl).

Nell (Hg) participated in the World Championships Triathlon U20s competition in Malaga during the final week of term. Over half term Nell came an amazing 22nd at the World Age Group Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, racing for Bermuda! After a rough sea swim, Nell worked hard on the bike and finished with a really strong run.
Caitlin (Ap) was also selected to race for Great Britain, but sadly had to miss the race due to an injury.
Team of the Week
J. Colts 1 team who won the Langley National Rugby Festival for the third time in four years, conceding only 5 points all weekend and showing great character throughout.

The U16As had a strong win away from home against St Helen’s and St Katherine’s, winning 28-18 with some impressive attacking play from Maya (A) and Willow (T).
The U14B and U14C development teams played at home on Thursday against Bohunt, winning both games – well done to the players who represented in their first games of competitive netball!
Saturday saw the County Schools Tournament at Theale Green School, with the U14A, U16A and 1sts competing against the strongest local teams. Despite only having four weeks of training time to prepare together, the U14As overcame a 1st round loss to end the afternoon County Champions, beating St Mary’s in their final. The whole team demonstrated excellent skill and camaraderie, with particularly excellent shooting from Lexie (Ap), Coco (C) and Flossie (A).
The U16s found themselves in a very strong group and put on strong performances against the Marist, St George’s Ascot and Newlands. They fell short of qualifying, but grew across the day as a squad.
The 1sts played a round robin format, with a gruelling day of eight rounds. Unbeaten after the first six, the toughest challenges came in the form of Bradfield and The Marist in the closing stages of the tournament. Going level into half time against Bradfield, the attacking unit adapted well to extend a confident lead, capitalising on defensive gains from Freya (T), Cara (E) and Juliet (A). A final match up against The Marist was again closely contested, but some calm attacking play from Keira (C) and Jazmine (W) ensured an unbeaten run. A particular commendation goes to the 1st team’s defensive effort, only conceding 21 goals across 112 minutes of netball – the next closest team conceded double this! We look forward to supporting the 1sts and the U14As as they represent Berkshire in the Regional Finals next year.
Well done to Amelie (W) for being selected for the Scotland U21 long squad.
Well done to the players who have been selected for the following Performance Pathways;
Amelie (W) and Keira (C) – Pulse Power U19s
Eden (C) and Freya (T) – Pulse Power U17s
Tallulah (E) and Juliet (A) – Pulse Power PDP
Lily (C), Willow (T), Lotti (Ap), Isabelle (T) and Michelle (W) – Berkshire County
Lexie (Ap) and Aniya (T) – Berkshire County Development
Rackets
Played 8, won 3, lost 5
Rugby
On the rugby fields, well done to all teams away at Cheltenham who recorded wins, and a special mention also to Colts 1 at home who won a brilliant game, probably with their best performance of the season so far.
Shooting
Played 3, won 3
This was the shooting team’s first outing to Charterhouse since the early 2000s, with neither school’s Head of Shooting able to recollect a match since the days of Hilton Adcroft as Head of Shooting for Wellington College.
Both schools fielded three teams of four, of different levels. For the A team match, Wellington won with 379 to Charterhouse’s 376 (a 96 top score from Penny (A)), with this team being fully self-coached. The B team, having the option for being coached, won with a score of 382 to Charterhouse’s 375 (a 97 top score from Fabian (M)). The C team, a newbies team for both schools, was shot on the 5-bull target instead of the harder 10-bull target. Wellington just clinched the win with a score of 389 to Charterhouse’s 388, with Yathur (R) and Lucas (M) both top scoring with 99 – a really impressive feat, shooting on a new range to them, and having only started in September a few short weeks ago.
Squash
A tough match for the Senior and U16 boys away at Winchester. A really good performance from Raf (L) who has really stepped up and is playing well in the Seniors.
Team of the Week
The U14A netballers for an exceptional team performance across the day at the County Schools Tournament, finishing the day as Champions, having only been together as a group for a month. The squad demonstrated resilience, bouncing back from a loss in the 1st round.
Michaelmas Term 2024 Week 6
Sporting Note ahead of Saturday 12th October – Show Racism the Red Card Day
Sport at Wellington College aims to be Enjoyable, Engaging, Developmental and give an avenue for Positive Outcomes for all pupils. By having these four overarching aims, sport at Wellington College is aiming to provide opportunities via delivery of sessions and the sports that are run, to be an inclusive space for all pupils. It is clear from the world of sport at all levels, that sport and racism have been and remain intertwined. In recent years, many campaigns and initiatives have been seen to raise awareness of the issue of racism both in sport and wider society, such as players ahead of Premier League football fixtures taking a knee.
As well as celebrating Black History Month, October is also the month where the charity ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ seeks to raise awareness of the issue of racism in sport. Wellington College is supporting this cause not only to raise awareness of this important work but also to ignite conversations for positive change within our community and beyond. Wellington College as a whole will be supporting the ‘Wear Red Day’ on Friday 18th October, but ahead of his, on Saturday 12th October, our sports programme will turn red for the day as we invite visitors to join us in supporting this important charity by wearing an item of red clothing.

Badminton
The boys played 16, won 2, lost 14 – lost
The girls played 16, won 9, lost 7 – won
The boys had a difficult match against the MCS boys, the strongest team we play against all year round. They showed Wellington how much we had to learn. It was a tough game and we’ll come back stronger. The girls have always had a strong track record against other schools. They played well with special mentions going to Katya (W) and Emily (Ap) who won most of their matches as a 3rd pair. Also Ariel (O) and Shiza (Hg) who played their first matches for Wellington and won three out of the four matches too. Well done girls.
Basketball
Played 2, won 1, lost 1 – drew
Congratulations to the boys’ basketball U16As and Bs who played their first inter-school fixtures of the season against Marlborough on Thursday. The As fought hard but lost to a very strong Marlborough team. The Bs triumphed 35-28. The opponents were all in 5th form so a special mention should go to all 3rd formers who played, as they matched the physicality, speed and desire of the opposition despite the age difference. A particular mention should also go to Joey (S) and Derek (L) who played in both fixtures and scored several times in each.
Equestrian
Violet (O) attended the British Eventing Regional Championships and despite not managing to place, it was a great experience, as by far the youngest competitor.
Fencing
The fencing team travelled to Winchester this week to take part in two fixtures, Foil and Epee, which followed the usual 9-fight format with the first team to score 45 wins.
The Epee team began nervously first with Tom (Bl) taking a 3-2 lead followed by Freddie (R) taking this to 6-4. Helen (W) then steadied the ship taking the score to 15-10. From here, Wellington were in command, adapting well to their opponents and responding to any change of strategy, overall winning 45-32.
The Foil team had a nervous start too but gained confidence throughout the fixture to eventually win 45-33. An impressive performance by Madi (E) who only dropped 4 points throughout the match and scored 19. Annie (Hn) and Radley (R) fought well to ensure that the final result was in no doubt.
This was an excellent performance and huge congratulations go to all participants who represented the College well.
Football
This week our footballers faced Tonbridge. The U18A lost 2-0, and the U18B followed with a 4-1 defeat. However, the U18C secured a tight 3-2 victory, and our U16A team finished with a 0-0 draw. Well done to Ben (Hl) on his debut for the 1st XI, the first 4th former to do so in recent memory.
Golf
Wellington U15 golfers went to sunny Yorkshire to compete in the Swifts Schools Golf National Strokeplay event at KP Club. All students were a testament to the College and their houses upholding the values. After a competitive two days of golf the team managed a 3rd place finish with many great memories made.
Hockey
Played 12, won 2, lost 6, drew 4
Netball
2nd place for U14, U16 and U19 at the pre-counties Queen Anne’s tournament. The U14, U16 and U19s took part in the Queen Anne’s tournament on Wednesday. The tournament is great prep ahead of counties this coming Saturday. We were able to try and test lots of different combinations on court and, with a couple of challenging games, all our age groups came out with the silver medal. Lots to build on ahead of next week. Well done to all the girls for an amazing effort all afternoon!
Rackets
Played 9, won 6, lost 3
The boys’ 1st pair beat Eton 3-2 from 0-2 behind and have won four out of five this term. The girls’ 1st pair beat the national champions, Marlborough 2-0 away, and the always-strong Cheltenham 2-0, and are unbeaten so far this term. The boys’ 2nd pair beat Eton 3-0 on Thursday and are now unbeaten through five matches.
Rugby
Played 12, won 2, lost 8 drew 2
Well done to the U16A team for a tight win away from home at Millfield and to the U16B team for an epic 45-45 draw.

The badminton team struggled with a strong Winchester College match. Wellington played into difficult conditions in the new Winchester Hall. Well done to the 1st and 2nd pair who took games off the other side.
Hockey
Played 13, won 8, lost 3, drew 2
The U15C Jaguars earned a well-deserved 9-0 victory against Bradfield by using all the skills and formation patterns they had practised in training. The team worked brilliantly together, communicating effectively to move the ball up the pitch and into the D for some incredible shots on goal. Sarovi (Hg) stepped up as the new goalkeeper and didn’t let a single ball in. Ella (Hn) and Alice (C) were named players of the match for their standout performances.
Netball
Lost 28-29
On Thursday the 1st team played Gordon’s away. After going down 10-2 in the first 8 minutes the girls pulled off an amazing comeback to finish the quarter 13-10 to Gordon’s. The game was closely contested throughout but by the end of the 3rd quarter we led the game by 1 goal. We had lots of turnover in the last quarter but had trouble converting it to a goal and we lost the game by 1, 28-29.
Rackets
Played 8, won 6, lost 2 vs Cheltenham College
Real Tennis
Won 1, drew 1
Reuben (S) drew with a 39 handicapper in singles from The Oratory. Excellent result for Reuben.

Fencing
Match Report vs Marlborough College
The College welcomed Marlborough foil and epee teams for the second fixture of the season.
Both weapons were fought alongside each other in the usual nine-fight format. Freddie (R) opened with an important 5-1 victory and Tom (Bl) and Helen (W) followed with strong performances. After the fourth fight Tom had helped establish a 19-9 lead. It is very difficult for opponents to close such a big gap in epee as ‘double hits’ can maintain a lead. Solid performances against strong opponents in the remaining five fights maintained a comfortable lead and secured a 45-31 victory.
Foil proved to be closely and tenaciously fought on both sides. Maddie (W) put in a good opener 5-1 and Radley (R) and Annie (Hn) extended the lead 15-9 by the end of the third fight. In the team format an ‘on form’ foilist can, if time allows, rapidly close the deficit and it was quickly 20-18 after the fourth. Maddie struck again 5-1 to make it 25-19 but Marlborough caught up again to level at 28-28 with only three fights reaming. The last three fights were remarkably close and hard fought and very physical with no quarter given by either side. Radley opened up the lead 35-30. Annie consolidated it 37-36 and Maddie stormed to a 45-40 win.
Football
This Saturday saw Wellington play Marlborough College. The College won 3 games and lost 1: the 1st XI winning 5-0, 2nd XI winning 4-1, 3rd XI winning 6-0, and the U16As losing 7-2.
The 3rd XI U18 football team delivered a dominant 6-0 victory over Marlborough College. Luca (S) stood out with a well-taken hat-trick, showcasing his clinical finishing. The team’s overall performance was cohesive, securing a convincing win.
Golf
Played 4 and won 4 (2 tournaments with 15+ teams playing, and 2 head to head matches)
U18 and U15 A teams started the regional league season with comprehensive victories over Lord Wandsworth College; not dropping a single match across both teams – well played all involved. The U18As of Ellie (W), Eidan (E), Leo (Bl), and Arthur (L) won the coveted Benka Bowl in the Schools’ West Sussex Foursomes Invitational beating a total of 16 other schools. The U18As also won the first U18 national strokeplay event at The Berkshire, with our B team also finishing 3rd at the event with 17 different schools competing. Special mentions to Ellie (W) who won the overall girls’ event shooting 3 under, and Will (S) who finished 2nd in the boys’ event shooting 1 under on a tough windy day – well played, and a fantastic start to the season.
Well done to Emma (W) on her England regional squad selection, Ellie (W) on her England U18 squad selection, Benny (Ap) on being invited for Swiss national squad trials, Eidan (E) on his U18 Malaysian national team selection, Tara (Ap) on her Jordanian national youth squad selection and Will (S) who is waiting to hear back from England regional squad selection.
Hockey
Played 11, won 5, lost 4, drew 2.
Well done to the U14C team for their win against St John’s. The team listened and responded brilliantly to feedback, and thought carefully about their positions on the pitch in the second half. Working together meant they scored three goals in seven minutes. Additionally there were some excellent midweek performances too and some hard fought wins, such as the U15B team who came away 3-2 winners against St John’s.
Netball
Played 10, won 8, lost 2.
This week saw the first fixtures for the College netball teams, with players from all year groups featuring. A special mention must go to the U14A and B team players who represented the College for the first time, especially those who stepped in last minute when a number of B team squad members were ill. This week saw eight victories in both match and tournament format, with the 1st team victorious 50-41 in the 1st round of the Sisters in School Cup against Farnborough 6th Form College.
The 1st team travelled down to Canford on Saturday for their first away fixture of the season. The girls got off to a good start taking an early lead in the first quarter. With a squad of 11 we were able to try out a lot of different combinations with everyone taking the court. In the last quarter, Canford came back within 1 but with some flying interceptions from Juliet (A) and Sienna (C), the girls kept the lead and won the game 33-31. Well done to Tehya (W) for getting player of the match!
After a lengthy journey through wind and rain, the 3rd team netballers arrived in Canford and were welcomed with blue skies and sunshine. After instantly finding themselves 2-0 down, the girls stepped up their game and mindset and came back with strength and determination! They worked well as a team and always maintained at least a 2 goal lead ahead of Canford. There was a lot of energy, effort and enjoyment displayed, resulting in a 22-17 win. A good start to the season! Player of the Match: Somto (W).
Huge congratulations go to the following students for making it into National Performance League netball squads for Pulse Power:
U19: Amelie (W) and Keira (C)
U17: Freya (T) and Eden (C)
Rugby
Played 13, won 10, lost 3 vs Harrow.
Excellent performances from the U16A team, the U15A team and a clean sweep for senior rugby 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th XVs. The 1st XV beat Harrow 22-15. The boys showed huge spirit and care for the shirt to beat Harrow in a very competitive game. Both teams left nothing on the field and Wellington played with true Wellington physicality and skill to come out winners. It was a superb spectacle of schoolboy rugby.
Well done to Oscar (Pn), Rory (Bd) and Inigo (Hl) who have recently been selected for England U18 positional training camps.
Shooting
Win Quadrangular
Wellington A: 407.44
Bradfield Falcon: 405.40
Wellington B: 403.34
Wellington C: 401.42

Fabian (M) and Valentina (Hn) each scored 104 out of 105.
Natty (W) scored 103 out of 105.
Overall a very good result, showing a lot of strength in depth as we fielded three teams of four against other schools.
Tennis
Well done to Toby (Bl) who won the Tennis Europe 14u Doubles title.
Team of the Week
Golf Mixed U18A – the squad has won 2 from 2 in tournaments with over 15 schools present. The team has displayed all the College values and welcomed the new recruits with open arms. Epic (best) start to the season Wellington have had.

Athletics
Arthur (Pn) enjoyed his first summer competing as an athlete supported by British Athletics’ Paralympic Futures Programme. Arthur races in the T13 category, which is for track athletes with a visual impairment. At the Microplus UK Athletics Championships in Manchester in June, Arthur ran a Personal Best in the 1500m Ambulant race. The highlight of his season was another Personal Best of 4.04.73 at the London Athletics Meet / Diamond League held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park stadium, in a race that was won by Ben Sandilands, the T20 (learning impairment) 1500m World Champion (and since then, the Paris Paralympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder). In August, Arthur received an unexpected call informing him that he was third place reserve for the Paris Paralympics. Although he did not receive a final call-up, it was a wonderful surprise to feature in these conversations and gives great encouragement for training towards the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. He also ran an 800m PB, raced in the U20 International and England Age Group Combined Events 2024 Championships.
Badminton
Played Charterhouse – won 2, lost 6. Played Abingdon – won 6, lost 8. It was a busy second week for badminton, with two fixtures on Thursday and Saturday. With a new developing team there were some huge improvements moving from Thursday’s match to Saturday’s match. Special mentions to Andrew (E) who played well as a new student to the school. Ben (R) improved much over the summer, and overall this team should see good results in the future.
Equestrian
Millie (O) this summer won both the 1M and 1.10m showjumping finals at the British Showjumping National Finals.
Fencing
Riya (W) is just back from her very first Nationals in Nottingham. She came 23rd in the U17s.
Fencing Match Report vs Eton Home 12th September
Eton are always formidable opponents but a home fixture offered our fencers an opportunity to raise their game for the first fixture of the season with Helen (W) captaining for the first time. Foil and epee were fenced together on our two pistes with sabre following. Each match is composed of two teams of three fencing nine fights in a race to 45 hits against the clock. Our new foilist, Maddie (W), was straight in as opener and it was a close match. If she had nerves, it was not apparent and she held her opponent to 4-5. Annie (Hn) and Radley (R) followed and Eton opened up a lead but Annie held her next fight to 5-5 and Maddie struck back with 8 hits to level at 22-22. With four fights remaining promising a close and exciting finish. Eton edged ahead again 28-35 with two fights to go. Wellington needed 17 hits to win and Radley put in an excellent performance to take 7 hits. Maddie needed to find 10 hits and pushed Eton hard for her 7 hits and an exciting match ended with a close 42-45 victory for Eton. Epeeists Helen (W), Freddie ( R ) and Tom (Bl) faced a tough challenge as Eton just edged ahead in the early fights and extended the lead despite Tom scoring 7 excellent hits in his second fight. Eton proved too strong and took the match 23-45. Sabre finished the match with Eton needing to borrow a fencer. Keeley (O) joined them but fenced her hardest against her training partners. A confident Victor (R) took the first fight 5-0 and by the fourth fight Wellington were narrowly ahead by 2 hits. With three fights reaming Eton were just ahead 29-30 and the match could have swung either way. James (Bl) took 6 and Jacob (R) 5 and Victor closed with 5 for a welcome 45-42 win.
Football
This week, our football teams faced King Edward’s Witley with mixed results. The U18A team lost 3-1, having won their ISFA round 1 game in the week, while the U18B won 5-1, and the U18C dominated with an 8-0 victory. The U16A faced a tough 7-1 defeat, but the U15A finished strong with an impressive 8-0 win. Special mention to the U15As for an impressive 8-0 win, displaying all the values of the football club and reward for working hard on a new formation and way of playing.
Golf
The team won the U18 Swifts Foursomes: Lord Wandsworth last week.
Ellie (W) has been selected to play for England U16s against Ireland at Burnham and Berrow GC and is one of 8eight U18 girls in the England Golf National Girls’ Squad.
Emma (W) has been selected for the England South Region U16 Squad.
Hockey
The girls’ hockey 1st team reached the semi-finals of the St George’s Sixes tournament last week. Then on Saturday, the hockey club had a tough block with Hurstpierpoint, but one that still saw good wins for the 1st XI, U16As and the U15As and Bs.
Rackets
Played 9, won 7, lost 2. The whole team that played against Rugby on Tuesday did very well, with five wins from five. Congratulations to Tabs (T) on her rackets team debut. The College first pairs (boys and girls) are looking very strong ahead of the season.
Rugby
Played 11 matches last week: 7 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. The rugby club took on Whitgift on Saturday, which saw a 26-26 draw for the 1st XV but excellent wins for the likes of the 2nd and 3rd XV, the 16As, U15Bs and U14Cs. In the week there was an outstanding effort by the by 4th XV to beat St Joseph’s Reading 1st XV 10-5 on Bigside 1.
Running Club
On Saturday 14th September, four pupils from the Wellington College cross country team made a notable appearance at the Annual Alumni Race on Wimbledon Common. This was only the second time in the 72-year history of the race that current students joined the OWXC (Old Wellingtonians Cross Country) for this event. The 8k undulating cross-country course draws around 300 runners from approximately 60 schools. This long-standing tradition among alumni of top schools blends competitive spirit with a strong social element. Despite the challenging course, our students demonstrated exceptional grit and determination, achieving impressive results and proving that their representation is certainly a match for many alumni. This new tradition is hopefully here to stay!
- Quentin (T): 3rd U20
- Harry (S): 4th U20
- Caitlin (Ap): 1st U20
- Nell (Hg): 1st U17
Team of the Week
The U15A girls’ hockey team have grown in courage and endeavour, as they put their fitness training to great use in overcoming a Hurst side that kept piling on the pressure. The girls handled each wave of pressure beautifully and secured a 3-1 win, thanks to their clinical approach when in possession of the ball and their ability to maintain the intensity throughout the high paced game of hockey.

Sporting Parent Group
The Sporting Parent Group meets to share things the College is trying to do and achieve on the sporting front, but also to hear feedback from the parent body too, in order to see what we can do better.
The group meets three times a year, with the 2024/25 dates being 5th October 2024, 18th January 2025 (likely online), and 3rd May 2025 (09:00-11:00).
Each year we ask if any new parent to Wellington wishes to join the group (i.e. new 3rd, 4th or L6th), in an attempt to have a full balanced representation of the College in the group. If you wish to join, please respond via the FORM HERE by Sunday 15th September (please note, we may not be able to say yes to all those who are interested, as the group size is kept below 30 so as three yearly meetings are viable).
Hockey
Played 12 – won 12. The entire club got off to a fantastic start winning all twelve games scoring an incredible 45 goals and only conceding two all afternoon.
Football
Our footballers had a busy first weekend of term. The 1st XI narrowly lost 4-5 at home against the OW 1st XI. The 2nd XI played away at Bradfield College, finishing 2-4, and the 3rd XI faced a competitive match against Charterhouse. However, our Colts 1 secured a solid 2-0 victory against Charterhouse, while J. Colts 1 drew 1-1 with Bradfield College. Lastly, our Yearlings 1 lost in the final minutes 3-4 in a close match against Charterhouse. Well done to all who competed.
Rugby
Pre-season friendlies against Berkhamsted and RGS High Wycombe. An all-round excellent start to the season with tough fixtures against Berkhamsted and RGS High Wycombe that saw over 200 Wellington students playing on Saturday afternoon. Special mention to the U14C team who demonstrated great character and took two wins away, showing great team spirit early in their Wellington rugby careers.
Wellington vs Whitgift – Sat 14th September
Ahead of one of the first games of the season, to be played against Whitgift School on Saturday 14th September, we write here, as this set of fixtures will be one to raise awareness and support for the Seb’s Foundation. Seb Adeniran-Olule was a pupil at both Whitgift School and Wellington College, progressing through the Harlequins Academy to gain a professional contract. Representing all the England age groups, Seb was a talented prop forward who gained a great deal from his time at both schools. Seb’s spirit lives on through Seb’s Foundation, an independent charity providing mental health training for teachers and sports coaches, seminars for parents, and talks to pupils to give them tools and resources to navigate issues and signpost help for a range of mental health challenges. We would like to use this match to raise much needed funds for the work of Seb’s Foundation and this is why we are writing to you today. As is custom, the 1st XV match will attract a large crowd on the day, and it will also be livestreamed. Individuals and organisations are invited to sponsor the Wellington College team for a donation of £500. In return, sponsors can have their name or brand associated with the Wellington College team, visible to the audience watching the game in person as well as via the livestream (there are on average, 19,500 viewers per match). If you would like to show your support for Seb’s Foundation by sponsoring the Wellington College team, we invite you to complete the short form here and the Foundation will get in touch (there is also an option to make smaller donations too). As you might expect, sponsorship will only be accepted from individuals, groups, organisations, clubs, or companies that are considered to be appropriate for association with a school and young people. Thank you for considering this proposal, and we look forward to welcoming everyone on the day to enjoy a fantastic day of schoolboy rugby.
Swimming
Sienna (W) had an excellent Summer Nationals where she swam in six races overall and in the Open Water Nationals. She came 7th in Open Water 5K and 10th in 100m Butterfly at British and then came 9th in 400m Individual medal at English.
Triathlon
Liesl (C) and Caitlin (Ap) competed brilliantly in a GB age group triathlon selection race and did incredibly well coming 2nd and 3rd resulting in both being selected for the European Triathlon Championships in Istanbul next summer. Very well done to both for your determination and courage!
Our senior triathlon team did brilliantly at a very wet Reading Triathlon. Caitlin (Ap) completed her first Olympic distance race and did fantastically over a 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run, winning her age group. Nell (Hg) recorded the fastest U19 sprint distance time and second fastest female time with Liesl (C) having a great race to record the second fastest time in her age. Arthur (Pn) did incredibly well in his first multisport event completing a 750m murky lake swim and 5km slippery and bumpy run. A very impressive day out for the team. Well done! Exceptional resilience was shown by all the team, as well as lovely camaraderie, on a day that presented multiple unexpected challenges.
Team of the Week
The Yearlings Cs had a great run out on their first afternoon representing Wellington College playing against both RGS High Wycombe and Berkhamsted School. In the first game the boys fronted up to the physical challenge exceptionally well, with some strong carries from all over the park. Going into the next game, it was great to see the boys playing together much more as a team with a greater level of mutual support as they faced a capable RGS side. The team spirit was made more evident when the boys offered their support to an injured teammate. Overall, a great showing which shows real potential for how this team will progress across the term.
Michaelmas Term 2024 Week 1
Welcome back to another sporting term and year ahead.
We hope that everyone can find something in the sporting sphere that provides the opportunity and challenge to enjoy their sport, engage in it in a committed way and hopefully gain both personal development and positive outcomes and performances.

On the golf course across the summer Ellie (W) was very busy, where amongst many successes she won the Buckinghamshire Junior County Championship, was selected to play for England Girls in the Home Internationals where her team were crowned champions, and she was also part of the GB & Ireland girls’ team that made history, becoming the first Lions team to defeat the Continent of Europe in the history of the Junior Vagliano Trophy.
Gymnastics
Three Wellington pupils continue to have amazing success in TeamGym with Amelia (W) winning Gold at the TeamGym Senior British Championships with her teammates; Jemima (Hn) and her team came away with the Junior Women’s Silver Medal and Mabel’s (Ap) team came 4th in the Youth category. Well done all three.
Well done also to Amelia (W), who at the British Gymnastics Championships came home with two Golds and a Silver and has again been selected by British Gymnastics to represent GB at the Aerobic Gymnastics World Junior Championships.

Well done to Freya (T) and her team who won the U15 School Games title with Surrey Storm U15s.

Both the Schools week and the Imperial meet in the summer for the Target Shooting team saw some excellent performances. Well done individually in particular to Natty (W) who finished 99th in the Grand Aggregate.

In the pool, Martha (O) had swimming success and came back from Nationals with a silver and bronze medal as reward for all her hard efforts.
