Friday night’s Gala Concert was a vibrant celebration of Wellington College’s musical talent and the perfect way to mark the end of what has been an incredibly eventful term for the Music Department. Featuring the Symphony Orchestra, Camerata, Guitar Ensemble, and Concert Band, the evening showcased everything from the finesse of Sibelius to the blockbuster energy of Frozen.
Under the baton of Natalia Luis-Bassa, the Symphony Orchestra delivered a dynamic finale to Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 and a lively rendition of Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, both of which left the audience buzzing. Natalia’s decade-long dedication to the College was a central theme of the night, making this her final concert as conductor particularly poignant. As Simon Williamson, Director of Music and Arts, aptly put it:
“Along with all the music department, I would like to thank her for her inspirational conducting and for all the numerous concerts, rehearsals, and speech days she has led with such passion.”
The Guitar Ensemble provided a lovely interlude with A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, blending charm and nostalgia, while Camerata impressed with their precision in Sibelius’s Andante Festivo. The Concert Band brought a sense of fun and energy to the stage, particularly with their rousing Symphonic Highlights from Frozen, which undoubtedly left more than a few toes tapping.
A special thank-you must go to all the staff who made this term’s musical achievements possible, from masterclasses with world-class musicians to a Festival of Musical Theatre that raised thousands for charity. The concert was a fitting farewell to Natalia and a festive send-off for the holiday season. Merry Christmas to all!
