Last Friday, the Wellington College Big Band performed at Kings Place in London, bringing their talent to a venue often described as the Cultural Pulse of King’s Cross. The venue didn’t disappoint and was bursting with parents and alumni of Wellington College all enjoying the laid-back jazz atmosphere. Simon Williamson, Director of Music and Arts at Wellington College, remarked, “It was wonderful to see so many parents and familiar faces from the past – OWs, ex-parents etc., at Kings Place on Friday evening. The Wellington College Big Band really raised their game and performed which such energy and excitement. It was a brilliant event in a great venue.”

The concert was the start of celebrations for the 5th anniversary of the Arts Fund, a fund set up to support educational Arts projects involving schools or other community groups working with children of school age. Since 2020, the Arts Fund has donated over £125,000 towards Arts Projects including technical equipment, new musical instruments, art resources and staff training.

The Big Band opened the concert with Victory Dance (Ezra Collective) and Li’l Darling, showcasing their energy and precision. The programme featured a mix of ensemble pieces and smaller band numbers, with a focus on highlighting the solo work of the Upper Sixth students. Vocal performances by Joana C, Bella C, Isabel H, Theo B, and Miles B added variety and depth, with songs ranging from jazz standards to modern interpretations.

The evening also included performances by the Staff Band, who brought their own flair with pieces like Gregory Porter’s No Love Dying and Radiohead’s Exit Music for a Film. These contributions complemented the Big Band’s setlist and highlighted the collaborative nature of the concert.

Kings Place provided a fitting backdrop for the event, with its welcoming atmosphere adding to the enjoyment of the music. The mix of classic and contemporary jazz, paired with the enthusiasm of the performers, made for a memorable evening.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended and supported the night, as well as to those who have contributed to the Arts Fund over the years!
