Perhaps the most challenging aspect of studying Dance is choreography – the process of creating original work and bringing creative ideas to life through movement. This year, Wellington’s Third Form dancers took to the stage in the CLT to present their own choreographic pieces to an appreciative audience of family, friends and staff.
The evening was a wonderful celebration of creativity, commitment and emerging talent. It was particularly impressive to see the confidence and artistry on display, especially considering that many of the performers arrived at Wellington with little or no formal dance training. Their growth, dedication and willingness to embrace the creative process were evident in every performance.
A diverse range of stimuli were showcased throughout the evening, including explorations of artwork by Van Gogh, the ever-changing nature and power of our oceans, cinematic inspirations, poetry and global disasters. Each piece demonstrated thoughtful musical choices, with students selecting tracks that complemented and enhanced their choreographic intentions. Across all groups, the performances reflected increasing maturity, originality and a developing understanding of choreographic devices, structure and performance quality.
A group of Fourth Form dancers kindly showcased some beautiful coursework material performing a moving trio, and the show was closed by an uplifting performance duet by Thommy and Elyssa, which recently won the Independent Schools Dance Festival contemporary category.
A huge congratulations must go to every performer for the confidence, creativity and commitment shown throughout the process. The standard of work was exceptionally high. Prizes were awarded as follows:
