It is a red-letter day for Wellington College’s GCSE pupils, who woke up to a stunning set of ‘best ever’ results this morning. Inspired no doubt by the example of the IB and A-level students who achieved outstanding outcomes earlier in the summer, the cohort recorded a remarkable set of grades – and the College’s strongest outcomes at two key metrics: both the percentage of top grade 9s and also the proportion of 9s and 8s.

Over 45% of all qualifications received were graded as 9s – compared to the national figure of 5.2% – and almost 10% of the cohort secured a string of straight 9s.  70% of grades were 9s and 8s (equivalent to an A* under the previous alphabetical grading system) and 30% of pupils recorded a clean sweep of these two top grades.

James Dahl, Master of Wellington College, had this to say: “I am quite simply bowled over by the phenomenal results which this band of Wellingtonians has achieved, and we could not be prouder of them. The most common grade, by far, was a 9 and the average grade secured per pupil per qualification was an 8 – a remarkable reflection on this bright, talented and hard-working year group. They have given so much over the past three years and thoroughly deserve this success. I cannot wait to see what they are going to achieve during the Sixth Form.”

Congratulations to all the candidates for the dedicated way they went about their studies, and for giving themselves such solid foundations as they move on to the next stage of their academic journey. Whether they decide to choose the A-level or IB programme as they start life in the Sixth Form – Wellington is one of the few schools that offer both 16+ routes in parallel – the study skills, time management and academic confidence they have developed since joining the College looks sure to stand them in excellent stead.
